That same day the man of God spoke about a miraculous sign. He said,“ Here is the sign the Lord has announced. This altar will be broken to pieces. The ashes on it will be spilled out.”

And he gave a sign the same day, saying,“ This is the sign that the Lord has spoken:‘ Behold, the altar shall be torn down, and the ashes that are on it shall be poured out.’”

That same day the man of God gave a sign to prove his message. He said,“ The Lord has promised to give this sign: This altar will split apart, and its ashes will be poured out on the ground.”

He gave a sign that day. He said,“ This is the sign that the LORD has spoken:‘ The altar will now be ripped apart, and the ashes that are on it will be poured out.’”

Then he gave a sign on the same day, saying,“ This is the sign which the Lord has spoken:‘ Behold, the altar shall be torn to pieces and the ashes which are on it shall be poured out.’ ”

And he gave a sign the same day, saying,“ This is the sign which the Lord has spoken: Surely the altar shall split apart, and the ashes on it shall be poured out.”

And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which Jehovah hath spoken: Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.

Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom,

Gideon replied,“ If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me.

The Lord said,“ Throw it on the ground.” Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it.Then the Lord said to him,“ Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.” So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand.“ This,” said the Lord,“ is so that they may believe that the Lord, the God of their fathers— the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob— has appeared to you.”

The Jews then responded to him,“ What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”

Hezekiah had asked,“ What will be the sign that I will go up to the temple of the Lord?”

So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake.

Hezekiah had asked Isaiah,“ What will be the sign that the Lord will heal me and that I will go up to the temple of the Lord on the third day from now?”

Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him,“ Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”He answered,“ A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

“‘ And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign to you— they will both die on the same day.

And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city.“‘ This is the Lord’s sign to you that the Lord will do what he has promised:I will make the shadow cast by the sun go back the ten steps it has gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.’” So the sunlight went back the ten steps it had gone down.

“ Ask the Lord your God for a sign, whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.”But Ahaz said,“ I will not ask; I will not put the Lord to the test.”Then Isaiah said,“ Hear now, you house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of humans? Will you try the patience of my God also?Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Then the Lord said,“ If they do not believe you or pay attention to the first sign, they may believe the second.But if they do not believe these two signs or listen to you, take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground. The water you take from the river will become blood on the ground.”

If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a sign or wonder,and if the sign or wonder spoken of takes place, and the prophet says,“ Let us follow other gods”( gods you have not known)“ and let us worship them,”you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The Lord your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul.

“‘ This will be the sign to you that I will punish you in this place,’ declares the Lord,‘ so that you will know that my threats of harm against you will surely stand.’
