By the word of the Lord he cried out against the altar:“ Altar, altar! This is what the Lord says:‘ A son named Josiah will be born to the house of David. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who make offerings here, and human bones will be burned on you.’”

The man cried out. He shouted a message from the Lord against the altar. He said,“ Altar! Altar! The Lord says,‘ A son named Josiah will be born into the royal family of David. Altar, listen to me! Josiah will sacrifice the priests of the high places on you. They will be the children of the priests who are offering sacrifices here. So human bones will be burned on you.’ ”

And the man cried against the altar by the word of the Lord and said,“ O altar, altar, thus says the Lord:‘ Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name, and he shall sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who make offerings on you, and human bones shall be burned on you.’”

Then at the Lord’s command, he shouted,“ O altar, altar! This is what the Lord says: A child named Josiah will be born into the dynasty of David. On you he will sacrifice the priests from the pagan shrines who come here to burn incense, and human bones will be burned on you.”

The man of God cried out against the altar by the word of the LORD:“ Altar, altar, this is what the LORD says,‘ A son will be born to the house of David, named Josiah, and he will sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who are burning incense on you. Human bones will be burned on you.’”

And he cried out against the altar by the word of the Lord and said,“ Altar, altar, this is what the Lord says:‘ Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name; and on you he shall sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and human bones shall burn on you.’ ”

Then he cried out against the altar by the word of the Lord, and said,“ O altar, altar! Thus says the Lord:‘ Behold, a child, Josiah by name, shall be born to the house of David; and on you he shall sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and men’s bones shall be burned on you.’”

And he cried against the altar by the word of Jehovah, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith Jehovah: Behold, a son shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he sacrifice the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men’s bones shall they burn upon thee.

The man of God cried out against the altar by a revelation from the Lord:“ Altar, altar, this is what the Lord says,‘ A son will be born to the house of David, named Josiah, and he will sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who are burning incense on you. Human bones will be burned on you.’”

And he cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men’s bones shall be burnt upon thee.

With the authority of the LORD he cried out against the altar,“ O altar, altar! This is what the LORD says,‘ Look, a son named Josiah will be born to the Davidic dynasty. He will sacrifice on you the priests of the high places who offer sacrifices on you. Human bones will be burned on you.’”

He cried against the altar by Yahweh’s word, and said,“ Altar! Altar! Yahweh says:‘ Behold, a son will be born to David’s house, Josiah by name. On you he will sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and they will burn men’s bones on you.’”

Listen, you heavens, and I will speak; hear, you earth, the words of my mouth.

“ Son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel and say,‘ Mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord.

Under his direction the altars of the Baals were torn down; he cut to pieces the incense altars that were above them, and smashed the Asherah poles and the idols. These he broke to pieces and scattered over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.He burned the bones of the priests on their altars, and so he purged Judah and Jerusalem.In the towns of Manasseh, Ephraim and Simeon, as far as Naphtali, and in the ruins around them,he tore down the altars and the Asherah poles and crushed the idols to powder and cut to pieces all the incense altars throughout Israel. Then he went back to Jerusalem.

Hear me, you heavens! Listen, earth! For the Lord has spoken:“ I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.

Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty- one years. His mother’s name was Jedidah daughter of Adaiah; she was from Bozkath.He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and followed completely the ways of his father David, not turning aside to the right or to the left.

Therefore I told you these things long ago; before they happened I announced them to you so that you could not say,‘ My images brought them about; my wooden image and metal god ordained them.’You have heard these things; look at them all. Will you not admit them?“ From now on I will tell you of new things, of hidden things unknown to you.They are created now, and not long ago; you have not heard of them before today. So you cannot say,‘ Yes, I knew of them.’

“ Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet. Declare to my people their rebellion and to the descendants of Jacob their sins.

O land, land, land, hear the word of the Lord!

Even the altar at Bethel, the high place made by Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin— even that altar and high place he demolished. He burned the high place and ground it to powder, and burned the Asherah pole also.Then Josiah looked around, and when he saw the tombs that were there on the hillside, he had the bones removed from them and burned on the altar to defile it, in accordance with the word of the Lord proclaimed by the man of God who foretold these things.The king asked,“ What is that tombstone I see?” The people of the city said,“ It marks the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and pronounced against the altar of Bethel the very things you have done to it.”“ Leave it alone,” he said.“ Don’t let anyone disturb his bones.” So they spared his bones and those of the prophet who had come from Samaria.

who carries out the words of his servants and fulfills the predictions of his messengers, who says of Jerusalem,‘ It shall be inhabited,’ of the towns of Judah,‘ They shall be rebuilt,’ and of their ruins,‘ I will restore them,’who says to the watery deep,‘ Be dry, and I will dry up your streams,’who says of Cyrus,‘ He is my shepherd and will accomplish all that I please; he will say of Jerusalem,“ Let it be rebuilt,” and of the temple,“ Let its foundations be laid.”’

I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say,‘ My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.’

“ I tell you,” he replied,“ if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

therefore, mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign Lord: This is what the Sovereign Lord says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys, to the desolate ruins and the deserted towns that have been plundered and ridiculed by the rest of the nations around you—

For the message he declared by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel and against all the shrines on the high places in the towns of Samaria will certainly come true.”

I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws and bring you out with your whole army— your horses, your horsemen fully armed, and a great horde with large and small shields, all of them brandishing their swords.

See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you.”

Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty- one years.
