雖然、吾所書者、亦可謂之新誡命、主所體認、亦爾等所體認者也。蓋暗昧寖消、而真光已著矣。

Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.

But I am writing what amounts to a new command. Its truth was shown in how Jesus lived. It is also shown in how you live. That’s because the darkness is passing away. And the true light is already shining.

那光來到世界，是普照世人的真光。

我給你們一條新命令，就是要你們彼此相愛；我怎樣愛你們，你們也要怎樣彼此相愛。

這些不信的人被這世代的神弄瞎了他們的心眼，使他們看不見基督榮耀的福音的光；基督就是神的形象。我們並不是傳揚自己，而是傳揚耶穌基督是主，並且為了耶穌的緣故成了你們的僕人。因為那說“要有光從黑暗裡照出來”的神，已經照在我們的心裡，要我們把神的榮光照出去，就是使人可以認識那在基督臉上的榮光。

可是，對你們敬畏我名的人，必有公義的太陽升起來；它的光線有醫治的功能；你們必出來跳躍，像欄裡的肥牛犢。”

愛神的，也應當愛弟兄，這就是我們從神領受的命令。

親愛的，神既然這樣愛我們，我們也應當彼此相愛。

我們因為愛弟兄，就知道我們已經出死入生了；不愛弟兄的，仍然住在死中。凡恨弟兄的，就是殺人的。你們知道，殺人的在他裡面沒有永生。主為我們捨命，這樣，我們就知道甚麼是愛；我們也應當為弟兄捨命。

因為冬天已過，雨水止息，已經過去了。地上百花齊放，百鳥齊鳴的時候已經來到；斑鳩的聲音在我們境內也聽見了。

你們要彼此相愛，像我愛你們一樣，這就是我的命令。人為朋友捨命，人間的愛沒有比這個更大的了。你們若行我所吩咐你們的，就是我的朋友了。我不再稱你們為僕人，因為僕人不知道主人所作的事；我已經稱你們為朋友了，因為我從我父那裡聽見的一切，都已經告訴你們了。

行在黑暗中的人民，看見了大光；住在死蔭之地的人，有光照耀他們。（本節在《馬索拉文本》為9:1）

耶穌說：“光在你們中間的時間不多了。你們應當趁著有光的時候行走，免得黑暗追上你們。在黑暗中行走的人，不知道往哪裡去。

藉著他，你們信那使他從死人中復活、又給他榮耀的神，叫你們的信心和盼望都在於神。
