關於未婚的，我沒有主的命令，但我既然蒙了主的憐憫，成為可信靠的人，就把我的意見提出來。為了目前的困難，我認為人最好能保持現狀。

我說這話是容許你們，並不是命令。

主把權柄賜給我們，是為了要造就你們，不是要破壞你們，就算我為這權柄誇口過分了一點，也不會覺得慚愧。不要以為我寫信是用來嚇你們。因為有人說：“他的信又嚴厲又強硬，他本人卻其貌不揚，言語粗俗。”

我現在要對未婚的人和寡婦說，他們若保持像我這樣就好了；

難道神的道是從你們出來的嗎？是單單臨到你們的嗎？如果有人自以為是先知或是屬靈的，他就應該知道我寫給你們的是主的命令；

我成了愚妄的人，是你們逼成的。其實你們應該稱讚我，因為我雖然算不得甚麼，卻沒有一點比不上那些“超等使徒”。

並且要以我們的主恆久忍耐為給人得救的機會，就如我們所親愛的弟兄保羅，按照所賜給他的智慧，寫給你們的一樣；他在一切書信上，都講論這些事。在這些書信中，有些難明白的地方，那不學無術和不穩定的人加以曲解，好像曲解別的經書一樣，就自取滅亡。

我不是自由的嗎？我不是使徒嗎？我不是見過我們的主耶穌嗎？你們不是我在主裡面的工作嗎？對別人來說，我或許不是使徒，但對你們來說，我總是使徒，因為你們就是我在主裡作使徒的印記。對那些盤問我的人，這就是我的答辯。

關於你們信上所提的事:“男人不親近女人倒好”。

所以那棄絕這命令的，不是棄絕人，而是棄絕把他自己的聖靈賜給你們的那位神。

我說這話，是為了你們自己的益處；我不是要限制你們，而是要你們作合宜的事，一心一意地對主忠誠。
