I give a command to those who are married. It is a direct command from the Lord, not from me. A wife must not leave her husband.

But here is what I tell you. Anyone who divorces his wife makes her a victim of adultery. And anyone who gets married to the divorced woman commits adultery. A man may divorce his wife only if she has not been faithful to him.

“ Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery. Also, the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Some Pharisees came to test Jesus. They asked,“ Does the Law allow a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?”Jesus replied,“ Haven’t you read that in the beginning the Creator‘ made them male and female’?( Genesis 1:27)He said,‘ That’s why a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. The two will become one.’( Genesis 2:24)They are no longer two, but one. So no one should separate what God has joined together.”They asked,“ Then why did Moses command that a man can give his wife a letter of divorce and send her away?”Jesus replied,“ Moses let you divorce your wives because you were stubborn. But it was not this way from the beginning.Here is what I tell you. Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery. A man may divorce his wife only if she has not been faithful to him.”

You ask,“ Why?” It’s because the Lord is holding you responsible. He watches how you treat the wife you married when you were young. You have been unfaithful to her. You did it even though she’s your partner. You promised to stay married to her. And the Lord was a witness to it.Hasn’t the one God made the two of you one also? Both of you belong to him in body and spirit. And why has the one God made you one? Because he wants his children to be like him. So be careful. Don’t be unfaithful to the wife you married when you were young.“ Suppose a man hates and divorces his wife,” says the Lord God of Israel.“ Then he is harming the one he should protect,” says the Lord who rules over all. So be careful. And don’t be unfaithful.

He answered,“ What if a man divorces his wife and gets married to another woman? He commits adultery against her.And what if she divorces her husband and gets married to another man? She commits adultery.”

But you people are like a woman who is not faithful to her husband. Israel, you have not been faithful to me,” announces the Lord.

But if the unbeliever leaves, let that person go. In that case, the believer does not have to stay married to the unbeliever. God wants us to live in peace.

I also have something to say to everyone else. It is from me, not a direct command from the Lord. Suppose a brother has a wife who is not a believer. If she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her.

In my opinion, she is happier if she stays single. And I also think that I am led by the Spirit of God in saying this.

I say those things to you as my advice, not as a command.

Now I want to say something about virgins. I have no direct command from the Lord. But I give my opinion. Because of the Lord’s mercy, I give it as one who can be trusted.
