I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.

I would like all of you to speak in other languages. But I would rather have you prophesy. The person who prophesies is more helpful than those who speak in other languages. But that is not the case if someone explains what was said in the other languages. Then the whole church can be built up.

Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.

I wish you could all speak in tongues, but even more I wish you could all prophesy. For prophecy is greater than speaking in tongues, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be strengthened.

或行靈蹟、或作預言、或識別神之真偽、或操方言、或譯方言；

使我無愛德、而徒能操萬國之音、作天神之語、則猶鳴鑼擊鈸而已矣。

信者恆有神跡隨之、藉我名以祛鬼魔、以操新語、

夫愛之為德、寬裕含忍、愷悌慈祥、不忮不求、不矜不伐、

感荷天主大德、吾所操方言、多於爾眾。然在集會時、吾無寧用理智說述五句教人之語、而不願用方言說千萬語也。兄弟、吾人對邪惡之事、宜若童蒙、一無所知；惟對於理智、則莫為童蒙、當作老成練達之人。經載主言云：『吾將用異舌異脣警告斯民；雖然、其亦不我聽矣。』可知方言之為用、非所以警信者、乃所以警不信者；而預言非所以曉諭不信者、乃所以曉諭信者也。倘若全會同人、於聚集時、相約共操方言；其時適有無術或不信之人、亦來到會、不將謂爾等作夢囈耶？若同人共作預言、即來一不信或無術之人、亦將為爾眾所感化為爾眾所詰究、自覺心中隱念、昭然若揭、則必俯伏而頂禮天主、且自承天主之實與爾偕矣。然則兄弟究應如何？爾等聚會時、各有貢獻、或以聖詠、或以教理、或以啟示、或以方言、或以繙譯；總之、亦在己立立人、己達達人而已矣。如有作方言者、以二人為限、多則三人、按次發言、且須有舌人為之繙譯。若無舌人、則在會中應守緘默、逕向自己及天主陳述可也。作預言者、亦以二三人為限、其餘皆應靜聽、以辯其真偽。設座中有人獲一啟示、則先發言者、即應停止發言。如此則井井有序、各人皆得預言、使同人均獲教益、咸蒙鼓勵。蓋先知之識、雖屬聖神所賦、而言默則由己耳。應知天主非紊亂之主、乃和平之主也。婦人在會中宜謹守緘默、不許發言、此乃諸聖教會之通則也。法有明誡、婦人固應順服男子也。若欲有所學、可歸問其夫。婦人而在會中發言、實可羞也。夫天主之道、豈自爾中發源乎？抑僅傳至爾處乎？倘有人自以為先知、或富於靈賦、則應知吾茲所書者、乃為主之命令也。若並此而不知、則吾亦不之知矣。總之、望兄弟志於預言同時亦勿禁方言；惟一切務求井然有序無失體統耳。

是故爾既有志於靈賦、則須以建立聖會為宗旨。操方言者、務須祈求繙譯之術、俾知如何譯述。

爾等當追求愛德、亦當志於靈賦；而靈賦之中、預言尚矣。

天主在教會內所建立者、一為宗徒、二為先知、三為教師、次則聖蹟、異能、醫道賑濟、管理、及各種方言；豈能皆為宗徒、皆為先知、皆為教師、皆施聖蹟、皆行醫道、皆操方言、皆作繙譯者哉？

惟作先知之言、則所以覺眾；立人達人、勸人慰人、於是乎賴。作方言者立己、而作預言者立眾。
