For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.

Anyone who speaks in a language they had not known before doesn’t speak to people. They speak only to God. In fact, no one understands them. What they say by the Spirit remains a mystery.

Instead, be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature.It is written in the law:“ By people with strange tongues and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people, yet not even in this way will they listen to me,” says the Lord.So then, tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers. Prophecy, however, is not for unbelievers but for believers.So if the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and unbelievers or uninformed people enter, will they not say that you have lost your minds?

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them.Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven residing in Jerusalem.When this sound occurred, a crowd gathered and was in confusion, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.Completely baffled, they said,“ Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?And how is it that each one of us hears them in our own native language?Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and the province of Asia,Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs– we hear them speaking in our own languages about the great deeds God has done!”

Come, let’s go down and confuse their language so they won’t be able to understand each other.”

My goal is that their hearts, having been knit together in love, may be encouraged, and that they may have all the riches that assurance brings in their understanding of the knowledge of the mystery of God, namely, Christ,

Listen, I will tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed–

Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that had been kept secret for long ages,

that by revelation the divine secret was made known to me, as I wrote before briefly.When reading this, you will be able to understand my insight into this secret of Christ.Now this secret was not disclosed to people in former generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit,namely, that through the gospel the Gentiles are fellow heirs, fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus.I became a servant of this gospel according to the gift of God’s grace that was given to me by the exercise of his power.To me– less than the least of all the saints– this grace was given, to proclaim to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christand to enlighten everyone about God’s secret plan– a secret that has been hidden for ages in God who has created all things.

It is the same for you. If you do not speak clearly with your tongue, how will anyone know what is being said? For you will be speaking into the air.There are probably many kinds of languages in the world, and none is without meaning.If then I do not know the meaning of a language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me.

I will sing a song that imparts wisdom; I will make insightful observations about the past.

Pray for me also, that I may be given the message when I begin to speak– that I may confidently make known the mystery of the gospel,

He said to them,“ The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those outside, everything is in parables,

I will declare a wise saying; I will share my profound thoughts.I will learn a song that imparts wisdom; I will then sing my insightful song to the accompaniment of a harp.

And we all agree, our religion contains amazing revelation: He was revealed in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among Gentiles, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

He replied,“ You have been given the opportunity to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but they have not.

Those who were with me saw the light, but did not understand the voice of the one who was speaking to me.

God has revealed these to us by the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.

But in the days when the seventh angel is about to blow his trumpet, the mystery of God is completed, just as he has proclaimed to his servants the prophets.”

The LORD will raise up a distant nation against you, one from the other side of the earth as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you will not understand,

that is, the mystery that has been kept hidden from ages and generations, but has now been revealed to his saints.God wanted to make known to them the glorious riches of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Instead we speak the wisdom of God, hidden in a mystery, that God determined before the ages for our glory.

Eliakim son of Hilkiah, Shebna, and Joah said to the chief adviser,“ Speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it. Don’t speak with us in the Judahite dialect in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”

Otherwise, if you are praising God with your spirit, how can someone without the gift say“ Amen” to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?

If someone speaks in a tongue, it should be two, or at the most three, one after the other, and someone must interpret.But if there is no interpreter, he should be silent in the church. Let him speak to himself and to God.
