雖傾所有以濟貧、又舍身被焚、若無愛則於我無益、

使我無愛德、雖罄輸所有、以濟貧寒、甚至捨身以投諸火、亦何益之有。

If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Suppose I give everything I have to poor people. And suppose I give myself over to a difficult life so I can brag. If I don’t have love, I get nothing at all.

If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.

And if I give away all my possessions, and if I give over my body in order to boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.

And if I give away all my possessions to charity, and if I surrender my body so that I may glory, but do not have love, it does me no good.

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

And if I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profiteth me nothing.

And if I donate all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body in order to boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but does not have works? Can this kind of faith save him?If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacks daily food,and one of you says to them,“ Go in peace, keep warm and eat well,” but you do not give them what the body needs, what good is it?So also faith, if it does not have works, is dead being by itself.

They do all their deeds to be seen by people, for they make their phylacteries wide and their tassels long.

Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, being jealous of one another.

No one has greater love than this– that one lays down his life for his friends.

My confident hope is that I will in no way be ashamed but that with complete boldness, even now as always, Christ will be exalted in my body, whether I live or die.For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain.

Do not be carried away by all sorts of strange teachings. For it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not ritual meals, which have never benefited those who participated in them.

When Jesus heard this, he said to him,“ One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Peter said to him,“ Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you!”

The Spirit is the one who gives life; human nature is of no help! The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.

On that day, many will say to me,‘ Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, and in your name cast out demons and do many powerful deeds?’Then I will declare to them,‘ I never knew you. Go away from me, you lawbreakers!’

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to King Nebuchadnezzar,“ We do not need to give you a reply concerning this.If our God whom we are serving exists, he is able to rescue us from the furnace of blazing fire, and he will rescue us, O king, from your power as well.But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we don’t serve your gods, and we will not pay homage to the golden statue that you have erected.”Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with rage, and his disposition changed toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He gave orders to heat the furnace seven times hotter than it was normally heated.He ordered strong soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and to throw them into the furnace of blazing fire.So those men were tied up while still wearing their cloaks, trousers, turbans, and other clothes, and were thrown into the furnace of blazing fire.But since the king’s command was so urgent, and the furnace was so excessively hot, the men who escorted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were killed by the leaping flames.But those three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell into the furnace of blazing fire while still securely bound.Then King Nebuchadnezzar was startled and quickly got up. He said to his ministers,“ Wasn’t it three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?” They replied to the king,“ For sure, O king.”He answered,“ But I see four men, untied and walking around in the midst of the fire! No harm has come to them! And the appearance of the fourth is like that of a god!”Then Nebuchadnezzar approached the door of the furnace of blazing fire. He called out,“ Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the most high God, come out! Come here!” Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego emerged from the fire.Once the satraps, prefects, governors, and ministers of the king had gathered around, they saw that those men were physically unharmed by the fire. The hair of their heads was not singed, nor were their trousers damaged. Not even the smell of fire was to be found on them!Nebuchadnezzar exclaimed,“ Praised be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent forth his angel and has rescued his servants who trusted in him, ignoring the edict of the king and giving up their bodies rather than serve or pay homage to any god other than their God!

Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from goodwill.The latter do so from love because they know that I am placed here for the defense of the gospel.The former proclaim Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, because they think they can cause trouble for me in my imprisonment.What is the result? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is being proclaimed, and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,

“‘ But just look at you! You are putting your confidence in a false belief that will not deliver you.

For“ physical exercise has some value, but godliness is valuable in every way. It holds promise for the present life and for the life to come.”

And Peter said,“ Look, we have left everything we own to follow you!”

“ Be careful not to display your righteousness merely to be seen by people. Otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven.Thus whenever you do charitable giving, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in synagogues and on streets so that people will praise them. I tell you the truth, they have their reward.But when you do your giving, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,so that your gift may be in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.

Then Paul replied,“ What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be tied up, but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”

For they loved praise from men more than praise from God.

He said,“ I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put in more than all of them.For they all offered their gifts out of their wealth. But she, out of her poverty, put in everything she had to live on.”

But Zacchaeus stopped and said to the Lord,“ Look, Lord, half of my possessions I now give to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone of anything, I am paying back four times as much!”

I will denounce your so-called righteousness and your deeds, but they will not help you.

Instead of being motivated by selfish ambition or vanity, each of you should, in humility, be moved to treat one another as more important than yourself.
