Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron,“ Because you didn’t believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.”

But when we are judged, we are punished by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

He said,“ If you will diligently listen to Yahweh your God’s voice, and will do that which is right in his eyes, and will pay attention to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you, which I have put on the Egyptians; for I am Yahweh who heals you.”

“ Aaron shall be gathered to his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given to the children of Israel, because you rebelled against my word at the waters of Meribah.

For David, after he had in his own generation served the counsel of God, fell asleep, was laid with his fathers, and saw decay.

Yahweh, don’t rebuke me in your wrath, neither chasten me in your hot displeasure.For your arrows have pierced me, your hand presses hard on me.There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation, neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin.For my iniquities have gone over my head. Yahweh sent venomous snakes among the people, and they bit the people. Many people of Israel died.The people came to Moses, and said,“ We have sinned, because we have spoken against Yahweh and against you. Pray to Yahweh, that he take away the serpents from us.” Moses prayed for the people.Yahweh said to Moses,“ Make a venomous snake, and set it on a pole. It shall happen that everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”Moses made a serpent of bronze, and set it on the pole. If a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked at the serpent of bronze, he lived.

Behold, I tell you a mystery. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed,

and he cried out to the man of God who came from Judah, saying,“ Yahweh says,‘ Because you have been disobedient to Yahweh’s mouth, and have not kept the commandment which Yahweh your God commanded you,but came back, and have eaten bread and drank water in the place of which he said to you,“ Eat no bread, and drink no water;” your body will not come to the tomb of your fathers.’”After he had eaten bread, and after he drank, he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back.When he had gone, a lion met him by the way and killed him. His body was thrown on the path, and the donkey stood by it. The lion also stood by the body.

However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to Yahweh’s enemies to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you will surely die.”Nathan departed to his house. Yahweh struck the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and it was very sick.David therefore begged God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night on the ground.The elders of his house arose beside him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, and he didn’t eat bread with them.On the seventh day, the child died. David’s servants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said,“ Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he didn’t listen to our voice. How will he then harm himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?”

You have forgotten the exhortation which reasons with you as with children,“ My son, don’t take lightly the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when you are reproved by him;for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines, and chastises every son whom he receives.”It is for discipline that you endure. God deals with you as with children, for what son is there whom his father doesn’t discipline?But if you are without discipline, of which all have been made partakers, then you are illegitimate, and not children.Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live?For they indeed, for a few days, punished us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness.All chastening seems for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
