Therefore your body will not be buried in the tomb of your ancestors.’”When the man of God had finished eating and drinking, the prophet who had brought him back saddled his donkey for him.As he went on his way, a lion met him on the road and killed him, and his body was left lying on the road, with both the donkey and the lion standing beside it.

“ You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your sins.”

But because by doing this you have shown utter contempt for the Lord, the son born to you will die.”After Nathan had gone home, the Lord struck the child that Uriah’s wife had borne to David, and he became ill.David pleaded with God for the child. He fasted and spent the nights lying in sackcloth on the ground.The elders of his household stood beside him to get him up from the ground, but he refused, and he would not eat any food with them.On the seventh day the child died. David’s attendants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they thought,“ While the child was still living, he wouldn’t listen to us when we spoke to him. How can we now tell him the child is dead? He may do something desperate.”

It says,“ My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?If you are not disciplined— and everyone undergoes discipline— then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
