雅各對法老說：「我在世寄居的年日是一百三十年，我一生的歲月又短又苦，比不上我祖先在世寄居的年日。」

人一生虛度的日子，如影兒經過，誰知道甚麼才是對他有益呢？誰能告訴他身後在日光之下會發生甚麼事呢？

我在地上是寄居的人，求你不要向我隱藏你的命令！

我們經過的日子，都在你震怒之下，我們度盡的年歲，好像一聲嘆息。

親愛的，你們是客旅，是寄居的，我勸你們要禁戒肉體的情慾；這情慾是與靈魂爭戰的。

有聲音說：「你喊叫吧！」我說：「我喊叫甚麼呢？」凡有血肉之軀的盡都如草，他的一切榮美像野地的花。耶和華吹一口氣，草就枯乾，花也凋謝。百姓誠然是草；草必枯乾，花必凋謝，惟有我們上帝的話永遠立定。

這些人都是存着信心死的，並沒有得着所應許的，卻從遠處觀望，且歡喜迎接。他們承認自己在地上是客旅，是寄居的。說這樣話的人是表明自己要尋找一個家鄉。他們若想念所離開的家鄉，還有回去的機會。其實他們所羨慕的是一個更美的，就是在天上的家鄉。所以，上帝並不因他們稱他為上帝而覺得羞恥，因為他已經為他們預備了一座城。

人不過像一口氣，他的年日如影消逝。

其實明天如何，你們還不知道。你們的生命是甚麼呢？你們原來是一片雲霧，出現片刻就不見了。
