雅各回答法老：“我寄居在世的年日是一百三十歲。我一生的年日又少又苦，不及我祖先寄居在世的年日。”

在虛空、消逝如影的人生，短暫的日子裡，有誰知道甚麼是對人有益處呢？誰能告訴人他死後在日光之下會發生甚麼事呢？

我是在世上作寄居的，求你不要向我隱瞞你的命令。

我們一生的日子都在你的震怒中消逝，我們度盡的年歲好像一聲歎息。

親愛的，我勸你們作客旅和寄居的人，要禁戒肉體的私慾，這私慾是與靈魂爭戰的。

有聲音說：“你呼喊吧！”他問（“他問”或參照《死海古卷》和《七十士譯本》翻譯為“我說”）：“我呼喊甚麼呢？”“所有的人盡都如草；他們的榮美都像野地的花。草必枯乾，花必凋謝；因為耶和華的氣吹在上面；真的，這民的確是草！草必枯乾，花必凋謝，唯有我們神的道永遠長存。”

這些人都是存著信心死了的，還沒有得著所應許的，只不過是從遠處看見，就表示歡迎，又承認他們在世上是異鄉人，是客旅。因為說這樣話的人，是表明他們在尋求一個家鄉。如果他們懷念已經離開了的地方，還有可以回去的機會。但是現在他們所嚮往的，是一個更美的、在天上的家鄉。所以，神不以他們稱他為神而覺得羞恥；因為他已經為他們預備了一座城。

人不過像一口氣，他的年日仿佛影子消逝。

其實明天怎樣，你們並不知道。你們的生命是甚麼呢？你們本來是過眼雲煙，轉瞬之間就消逝了。
