And everything dedicated by Samuel the seer and by Saul son of Kish, Abner son of Ner and Joab son of Zeruiah, and all the other dedicated things were in the care of Shelomith and his relatives.

Samuel the prophet had set apart some things for God. Saul, the son of Kish, had set apart other things. So had Abner, the son of Ner. And so had Joab, the son of Zeruiah. All these things and everything else that had been set apart were taken care of by Shelomith and his relatives.

Also all that Samuel the seer and Saul the son of Kish and Abner the son of Ner and Joab the son of Zeruiah had dedicated— all dedicated gifts were in the care of Shelomoth and his brothers.

Shelomoth and his relatives also cared for the gifts dedicated to the Lord by Samuel the seer, Saul son of Kish, Abner son of Ner, and Joab son of Zeruiah. All the other dedicated gifts were in their care, too.

All that the seer Samuel, Saul son of Kish, Abner son of Ner, and Joab son of Zeruiah had dedicated, along with everything else that had been dedicated, were in the care of Shelomith and his relatives.

And all that Samuel the seer had dedicated, and Saul the son of Kish, Abner the son of Ner, and Joab the son of Zeruiah, everyone who had dedicated anything, all of this was under the care of Shelomoth and his relatives.

( Now it used to be in Israel that whenever someone went to inquire of God he would say,“ Come on, let’s go to the seer.” For today’s prophet used to be called a seer.)

Now as Saul watched David going out to fight the Philistine, he asked Abner, the general in command of the army,“ Whose son is this young man, Abner?” Abner replied,“ As surely as you live, O king, I don’t know.”

After Saul had secured his royal position over Israel, he fought against all their enemies on all sides– the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines. In every direction that he turned he was victorious.He fought bravely, striking down the Amalekites and delivering Israel from the hand of its enemies.The sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malki-Shua. He had two daughters; the older one was named Merab and the younger Michal.The name of Saul’s wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the general in command of his army was Abner son of Ner, Saul’s uncle.Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.

When Joab saw that the battle would be fought on two fronts, he chose some of Israel’s best men and deployed them against the Arameans.He put his brother Abishai in charge of the rest of the army and they were deployed against the Ammonites.Joab said,“ If the Arameans start to overpower me, you come to my rescue. If the Ammonites start to overpower you, I will come to your rescue.Be strong! Let’s fight bravely for the sake of our people and the cities of our God! The LORD will do what he decides is best!”So Joab and his men marched out to do battle with the Arameans, and they fled before him.When the Ammonites saw the Arameans flee, they fled before his brother Abishai and went into the city. Joab withdrew from fighting the Ammonites and returned to Jerusalem.
