雅比斯比他眾兄弟更尊貴，他母親給他起名叫雅比斯，意思說：「我生他甚是痛苦。」雅比斯求告以色列的上帝說：「甚願你賜福與我，擴張我的疆界，你的手常與我同在，保佑我不遭患難，不受艱苦。」上帝就應允他所求的。

「你們怎麼說：『我們有智慧，耶和華的律法在我們這裏』？看哪，其實文士的假筆舞弄虛假。

這以斯拉從巴比倫上來，他是一個文士，精通耶和華－以色列上帝所賜摩西的律法。王允准他一切所求的，因為耶和華－他上帝的手幫助他。

掃羅對基尼人說：「你們離開亞瑪力人下去吧，免得我把你們和亞瑪力人一同殺滅，因為以色列眾人從埃及上來的時候，你們曾恩待他們。」於是基尼人離開了亞瑪力人。
