23:4 [ch. 3:5, 7; 26:12; Isa. 5:21; Rom. 12:16]be discerning enough to desist.
5When your eyes light on it, it is gone,
23:5 ch. 27:24for suddenly it sprouts wings,
flying like an eagle toward heaven.
623:6 [Ps. 141:4] Do not eat the bread of a man who is 23:6 ch. 28:22; Deut. 15:9stingy;23:6 Hebrew whose eye is evil
23:6 ver. 3do not desire his delicacies,

“Eat and drink!” he says to you,
but his 23:7 [Ps. 12:2]heart is not with you.
8You will vomit up the morsels that you have eaten,
and waste your pleasant words.
9Do not speak in the hearing of a fool,
for he will despise the good sense of your words.
or enter the fields of the fatherless,
he will 23:11 See ch. 22:23plead their cause against you.
12Apply your heart to instruction
and your ear to words of knowledge.
23:13 [ch. 19:18]if you strike him with a rod, he will not die.
14If you strike him with the rod,
you will 23:14 [1 Cor. 5:5]save his soul from Sheol.

20Be not among 23:20 [ver. 29, 30; Isa. 5:11, 22; Matt. 24:49; Luke 21:34; Rom. 13:13; Eph. 5:18] drunkards23:20 Hebrew those who drink too much wine

2323:23 [ch. 4:5, 7; 18:15; Matt. 13:44]Buy truth, and do not sell it;
buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.
he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him.
let 23:25 ch. 17:25her who bore you rejoice.
26My son, give me your heart,
and let your eyes observe23:26 Or delight in my ways.
2823:28 ch. 7:12; [Eccles. 7:26]She lies in wait like a robber
and increases the traitors among mankind.
Who has strife? Who has complaining?
Who has 23:29 [ver. 35] wounds without cause?
Who has 23:29 Gen. 49:12redness of eyes?
31Do not look at wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup
and goes down smoothly.
and stings like an adder.
33Your eyes will see strange things,

34You will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea,
like one who lies on the top of a mast.23:34 Or of the rigging
they beat me, but I did not feel it.
When shall I awake?
I 23:35 Isa. 56:12must have another drink.”
