10:1 See ch. 29:3A wise son makes a glad father,

10:1 ch. 17:25; 29:15but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.

210:2 [ch. 21:6; Ezek. 7:19; Luke 12:19, 20] Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit,

10:2 ch. 11:4, 6but righteousness delivers from death.

310:3 Ps. 34:9, 10; 37:25; [Matt. 6:33] The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry,

10:3 [Ps. 112:10; James 4:3]but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.

4A slack hand 10:4 [ch. 6:11; 12:24; 13:4] causes poverty,

10:4 ch. 21:5but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

5He who 10:5 [ch. 6:8] gathers in summer is a prudent son,

but he who sleeps in harvest is 10:5 ch. 17:2; 19:26a son who brings shame.

6Blessings are on the head of the righteous,

710:7 Ps. 112:6The memory of the righteous is a blessing,

but 10:7 [Ps. 9:5]the name of the wicked will rot.

810:8 [Matt. 7:24, 25]The wise of heart will receive commandments,

but a babbling fool will come to ruin.

910:9 ch. 3:23; 28:18; Ps. 23:4; Isa. 33:15, 16Whoever walks in integrity walks securely,

and a babbling fool will come to ruin.

12Hatred stirs up strife,

but 10:12 1 Pet. 4:8; [James 5:20]love covers all offenses.

13On the lips of him who has understanding, wisdom is found,

14The wise 10:14 [ver. 8; ch. 12:23] lay up knowledge,

but 10:14 ch. 18:7the mouth of a fool brings ruin near.

the poverty of the poor is their ruin.

16The wage of the righteous leads 10:16 ch. 11:19; 19:23to life,

the gain of the wicked to sin.

17Whoever heeds instruction is on 10:17 [ch. 6:23]the path to life,

but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.

18The one who conceals hatred has lying lips,

and whoever utters slander is a fool.

1910:19 [Matt. 12:36, 37] When words are many, transgression is not lacking,

10:19 ch. 17:27; [James 3:2]but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.

20The tongue of the righteous is 10:20 ch. 8:19; 16:16choice silver;

the heart of the wicked is of little worth.

21The lips of the righteous feed many,

but fools die for 10:21 [Hos. 4:6]lack of sense.

2210:22 [Gen. 24:35; 26:12; Deut. 8:18]The blessing of the Lord makes rich,

and he adds no sorrow with it.10:22 Or and toil adds nothing to it

23Doing wrong is 10:23 ch. 2:14; 15:21like a joke to a fool,

but 10:23 [ch. 8:30]wisdom is pleasure to a man of understanding.

26Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,

so is the sluggard to those who send him.

2910:29 [Ps. 25:12; Matt. 22:16; Acts 9:2]The way of the Lord is a stronghold to the blameless,

but destruction to evildoers.

but 10:30 ch. 2:21, 22the wicked will not dwell in the land.

3110:31 Ps. 37:30The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom,

but the perverse tongue will be cut off.

32The lips of the righteous 10:32 [Eccles. 10:12] know what is acceptable,

but the mouth of the wicked, 10:32 ch. 2:12what is perverse.
