Job Continues: Death Comes Soon to All

1“Man who is 14:1 ch. 15:14; 25:4; Matt. 11:11born of a woman

is 14:1 ch. 10:20; 16:22; Gen. 47:9; Ps. 39:5; 89:47few of days and 14:1 See ch. 5:7full of trouble.

2He comes out like 14:2 Ps. 103:15; Isa. 40:6, 7; James 1:10; 1 Pet. 1:24a flower and 14:2 Ps. 37:2; 90:6withers;

he flees like 14:2 See ch. 8:9; 17:7; Ps. 109:23a shadow and continues not.

3And do you 14:3 [Ps. 8:4; 144:3] open your eyes on such a one

and 14:3 ch. 22:4; Ps. 143:2bring me into judgment with you?

4Who can bring 14:4 ch. 15:14; [Ps. 51:5; John 3:6]a clean thing out of an unclean?

There is not one.

5Since his 14:5 [ch. 7:1; Ps. 39:4] days are determined,

and 14:5 ch. 21:21the number of his months is with you,

and you have appointed his limits that he cannot pass,

614:6 ch. 7:19look away from him and leave him alone,14:6 Probable reading; Hebrew look away from him, that he may cease

that he may enjoy, like 14:6 ch. 7:1a hired hand, his day.

7“For there is hope for a tree,

if it be cut down, that it will sprout again,

and that its shoots will not cease.

8Though its root grow old in the earth,

and 14:8 Isa. 11:1its stump die in the soil,

9yet at the scent of water it will bud

and put out 14:9 [ch. 29:19]branches like a young plant.

10But a man dies and is laid low;

man breathes his last, and 14:10 ch. 29:7where is he?

1114:11 Isa. 19:5As waters fail from a lake

and a river wastes away and dries up,

12so a man lies down and rises not again;

till 14:12 Deut. 11:21; Ps. 89:29; [Ps. 72:5; Matt. 5:18] the heavens are no more he will not awake

or be 14:12 [John 11:11]roused out of his sleep.

13Oh that you would 14:13 [Ps. 27:5; 31:20] hide me in 14:13 See ch. 21:13Sheol,

that you would 14:13 [Ps. 27:5; 31:20] conceal me 14:13 [Isa. 26:20]until your wrath be past,

that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me!

14If a man dies, shall he live again?

All the days of my 14:14 ch. 7:1service I would 14:14 ch. 13:15wait,

till my renewal14:14 Or relief should come.

15You would 14:15 ch. 13:22call, and I would answer you;

you would long for the 14:15 See ch. 10:3work of your hands.

16For then you would 14:16 ch. 31:4; 34:21number my steps;

you would not keep 14:16 [ch. 10:6]watch over my sin;

17my transgression would be 14:17 Deut. 32:34; [Hos. 13:12]sealed up in a bag,

and you would cover over my iniquity.

18“But the mountain falls and 14:18 Isa. 34:4crumbles away,

and 14:18 ch. 18:4the rock is removed from its place;

19the waters wear away the stones;

the torrents wash away the soil of the earth;

so you destroy the hope of man.

20You prevail forever against him, and he passes;

you change his countenance, and send him away.

21His sons come to honor, and he 14:21 [Eccles. 9:5]does not know it;

they are brought low, and he perceives it not.

22He feels only the pain of his own body,

and he mourns only for himself.”
