The Day of the Wrath of the Lord

1The word of the Lord came to me:

2“And you, 7:2 See ch. 2:1O son of man, thus says the Lord God to the land of Israel: 7:2 Lam. 4:18; [Isa. 10:23]An end! The end has come upon the four corners of the land.7:2 Or earth

3Now 7:3 [See ver. 2above] the end is upon you, and 7:3 See ver. 8I will send my anger upon you; 7:3 See ch. 18:30I will judge you according to your ways, and I will punish you for all your abominations.

47:4 See ch. 5:11And my eye will not spare you, nor will I have pity, but 7:4 ch. 9:10; 11:21; 16:43; 22:31I will punish you for your ways, while your abominations are in your midst. 7:4 See ch. 6:7Then you will know that I am the Lord.

67:6 [See ver. 2above]An end has come; the end has come; it has awakened against you. Behold, it comes.

77:7 ver. 10Your doom7:7 The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain; also verse 10 has come to you, O inhabitant of the land. 7:7 Zeph. 1:14, 15; [ch. 12:23] The time has come; the day is near, a day of tumult, and not 7:7 [Jer. 25:30]of joyful shouting on the mountains.

8Now I will soon 7:8 ch. 9:8; 14:19; 20:8, 13, 21, 33, 34; 22:22; 36:18pour out my wrath upon you, and 7:8 See ch. 5:13spend my anger against you, 7:8 [See ver. 3above]and judge you according to your ways, and I will punish you for all your abominations.

97:9 [See ver. 4above] And my eye will not spare, nor will I have pity. I will punish you according to your ways, while your abominations are in your midst. 7:9 [ch. 6:7]Then you will know that I am the Lord, who strikes.

13For 7:13 Lev. 25:13, 14the seller shall not return to what he has sold, while they live. 7:13 See ch. 9:8-10For the vision concerns all their multitude; it shall not turn back; and because of his iniquity, none can maintain his life.7:13 The meaning of this last Hebrew sentence is uncertain

14“They have blown the trumpet and made everything ready, but none goes to battle, 7:14 ver. 12for my wrath is upon all their multitude.

157:15 [ch. 6:12; Lam. 1:20] The sword is without; pestilence and famine are within. 7:15 Jer. 14:18He who is in the field dies by the sword, 7:15 Jer. 14:18and him who is in the city famine and pestilence devour.

167:16 ch. 6:8And if any survivors escape, they will be on the mountains, like 7:16 [Isa. 38:14]doves of the valleys, all of them moaning, each one over his iniquity.

177:17 ch. 21:7; Isa. 13:7; Jer. 6:24All hands are feeble, and all knees turn to water.

19They cast their silver into the streets, and their gold is like an unclean thing. 7:19 Prov. 11:4; Zeph. 1:18Their silver and gold are not able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the Lord. They cannot satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs with it. 7:19 [1 Tim. 6:10] For it was 7:19 ch. 14:3, 4, 7; 44:12the stumbling block of their iniquity.

207:20 [Isa. 64:11] His beautiful ornament they used for pride, and 7:20 [ch. 16:17]; See ch. 8:5-16they made their abominable images and their detestable things of it. Therefore 7:20 [ch. 9:7; 24:21; 25:3]I make it an unclean thing to them.

21And I will give it into the hands of 7:21 See ch. 28:7foreigners for prey, 7:21 [ver. 24; ch. 23:46] and to the wicked of the earth for spoil, and 7:21 [See ver. 20above]they shall profane it.

22I will turn my face from them, and 7:22 [See ver. 20above]they shall profane my treasured7:22 Or secret place. Robbers shall enter 7:22 [See ver. 20above]and profane it.

237:23 [Jer. 27:2] “Forge a chain!7:23 Probably refers to an instrument of captivity7:23 ch. 8:17; 9:9; 11:6; 22:3, 4; Jer. 6:7For the land is full of bloody crimes 7:23 [ver. 11]and the city is full of violence.

24I will bring 7:24 [ver. 21; Hab. 1:6, 13] the worst of the nations to take possession of their houses. 7:24 [ver. 11] I will put an end to the pride of the strong, 7:24 See ver. 20and their holy places7:24 By revocalization (compare Septuagint); Hebrew and those who sanctify them shall be profaned.

257:25 [ver. 2] When anguish comes, 7:25 [Jer. 6:14; 8:15; 1 Thess. 5:3]they will seek peace, but there shall be none.

27The king mourns, the prince is wrapped in despair, and the hands of the people of the land are paralyzed by terror. According to their way 7:27 [ver. 4] I will do to them, and according to their judgments I will judge them, 7:27 See ch. 6:7and they shall know that I am the Lord.”
