Prophecy to the Mountains of Israel

1“And you, 36:1 See ch. 2:1son of man, prophesy to 36:1 See ch. 6:2the mountains of Israel, and say, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord.

2Thus says the Lord God: Because 36:2 ver. 5; ch. 35:10, 12the enemy said of you, 36:2 ch. 25:3; 26:2‘Aha!’ and, ‘The ancient 36:2 Deut. 32:13heights have become our possession,’

3therefore prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord God: Precisely because 36:3 [ch. 6:3, 4] they made you desolate and crushed you from all sides, so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations, and 36:3 [Lam. 2:15, 16]you became the talk and evil gossip of the people,

4therefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God: Thus says the Lord God to 36:4 ch. 6:3the mountains and the hills, the ravines and the valleys, 36:4 [ch. 33:24, 27] the desolate wastes and the deserted cities, which have become 36:4 [ch. 7:21]a prey and derision to the rest of the nations all around,

5therefore thus says the Lord God: Surely I have spoken in 36:5 Deut. 4:24my hot jealousy against the rest of the nations and 36:5 ch. 35:15against all Edom, who 36:5 [ver. 3; ch. 35:10] gave my land to themselves as a possession 36:5 ch. 35:15with wholehearted joy and 36:5 ch. 25:6utter contempt, that they might make its pasturelands a prey.

6Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel, and say to 36:6 [See ver. 1above] the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys, Thus says the Lord God: 36:6 [ver. 5] Behold, I have spoken in my jealous wrath, because you have suffered 36:6 See ch. 32:24the reproach of the nations.

7Therefore thus says the Lord God: 36:7 See ch. 20:5I swear that the nations that are all around you 36:7 [See ver. 6above]shall themselves suffer reproach.

8“But you, O mountains of Israel, 36:8 See ch. 17:23shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to my people Israel, for 36:8 ch. 12:23; [Isa. 56:1]they will soon come home.

9For 36:9 [ch. 5:8] behold, I am for you, and I will turn to you, and 36:9 [ver. 34]you shall be tilled and sown.

10And 36:10 ver. 37; ch. 37:26; Jer. 30:19I will multiply people on you, the whole house of Israel, all of it. 36:10 [ver. 33, 35]The cities shall be inhabited and the waste places rebuilt.

11And I will multiply on you 36:11 Jer. 31:27; [Jer. 33:12] man and beast, and 36:11 [Gen. 1:28] they shall multiply and be fruitful. And I will cause you to be inhabited as in 36:11 [ch. 16:55] your former times, and 36:11 [Job 42:12] will do more good to you than ever before. 36:11 See ch. 6:7Then you will know that I am the Lord.

12I will let people walk on you, even my people Israel. 36:12 Obad. 17And they shall possess you, and you shall be their inheritance, and you shall no longer 36:12 [ch. 5:17]bereave them of children.

13Thus says the Lord God: Because they say to you, 36:13 [Num. 13:32]‘You devour people, and you bereave your nation of children,’

14therefore you shall no longer devour people and no longer bereave your nation of children, declares the Lord God.

15And I will not let you hear anymore 36:15 [See ver. 6above]the reproach of the nations, and you shall no longer bear the disgrace of the peoples and no longer cause your nation to stumble, declares the Lord God.”

The Lord’s Concern for His Holy Name

16The word of the Lord came to me:

1736:17 See ch. 2:1“Son of man, when the house of Israel lived in their own land, 36:17 See Lev. 18:25they defiled it by their ways and their deeds. Their ways before me were 36:17 See Lev. 18:19like the uncleanness of a woman in her menstrual impurity.

18So 36:18 See ch. 7:8I poured out my wrath upon them 36:18 ch. 16:36; 22:3for the blood that they had shed in the land, for the idols 36:18 See ch. 5:11with which they had defiled it.

1936:19 See ch. 5:10I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries. 36:19 See ch. 18:30In accordance with their ways and their deeds I judged them.

20But when they came to the nations, wherever they came, 36:20 Isa. 52:5; [ch. 22:26; Rom. 2:24]they profaned my holy name, in that people said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord, and yet they had to go out of his land.’

21But I had concern 36:21 [ch. 20:9; Isa. 43:25; 48:11]for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations to which they came.

I Will Put My Spirit Within You

22“Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: 36:22 ver. 32; [Deut. 9:5] It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, 36:22 [See ver. 20above]which you have profaned among the nations to which you came.

2336:23 See ch. 20:41And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. 36:23 [ch. 30:19, 26; 38:23; 39:7, 21]; See ch. 6:7And the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Lord God, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes.

2436:24 See ch. 11:17I will take you 36:24 See Ps. 44:11from the nations and gather you from all the countries and 36:24 ch. 37:12, 21bring you into your own land.

2536:25 [Isa. 52:15; Heb. 10:22] I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from 36:25 Isa. 4:4; [ver. 17] all your uncleannesses, and 36:25 ch. 37:23from all your idols 36:25 Jer. 33:8I will cleanse you.

26And I will give you 36:26 See ch. 11:19, 20a new heart, and 36:26 See ch. 11:19, 20a new spirit I will put within you. 36:26 See ch. 11:19, 20And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

2736:27 ch. 37:14And I will put my Spirit within you, 36:27 [See ver. 26above] and cause you to walk in my statutes and 36:27 ch. 37:24be careful to obey my rules.36:27 Or my just decrees

2836:28 ch. 28:25You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and 36:28 See ch. 11:20you shall be my people, and I will be your God.

29And 36:29 ch. 37:23; [Matt. 1:21] I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. And 36:29 Joel 2:19; [Zech. 9:17] I will summon the grain and make it abundant and 36:29 ch. 34:29lay no famine upon you.

3036:30 ch. 34:27I will make the fruit of the tree and the increase of the field abundant, 36:30 [See ver. 29above]that you may never again suffer the disgrace of famine among the nations.

31Then 36:31 See ch. 6:9you will remember your evil ways, and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves for your iniquities and your abominations.

3236:32 [See ver. 22above]It is not for your sake that I will act, declares the Lord God; let that be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel.

33“Thus says the Lord God: On the day that 36:33 [ver. 25] I cleanse you from all your iniquities, 36:33 [ver. 9, 10]I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places shall be rebuilt.

34And the land that was desolate shall be tilled, instead of being the desolation that it was in the sight of all who passed by.

35And they will say, ‘This land that was desolate has become like 36:35 See Isa. 51:3the garden of Eden, and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.’

36Then 36:36 [Ps. 126:2] the nations that are left all around you shall know that I am the Lord; I have rebuilt the ruined places and 36:36 [ch. 34:29] replanted that which was desolate. 36:36 See ch. 17:24I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it.

37“Thus says the Lord God: This also 36:37 [ch. 14:3] I will let the house of Israel ask me to do for them: 36:37 See ver. 10to increase their people like 36:37 [ch. 34:31]a flock.

38Like the flock for sacrifices,36:38 Hebrew flock of holy things36:38 [2 Chr. 35:7] like the flock at Jerusalem during her appointed feasts, so 36:38 [See ver. 33above] shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of people. 36:38 See ch. 6:7Then they will know that I am the Lord.”
