Amos8

The Coming Day of Bitter Mourning
18:1 ch. 7:1This is what the Lord God showed me: behold, a basket of summer fruit.
2And he said, 8:2 ch. 7:8“Amos, what do you see?” And I said, 8:2 [Jer. 24:1; Mic. 7:1] “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the Lord said to me,

8:2 Lam. 4:18“The end8:2 The Hebrew words for end and summer fruit sound alike has come upon my people Israel;
I will never again pass by them.
38:3 [ch. 5:23] The songs of the temple8:3 Or palace8:3 [Jer. 47:2] shall become wailings8:3 Or The singing women of the palace shall wail in that day,”
declares the Lord God.
8:3 [ch. 6:9] “So many dead bodies!”
“They are thrown everywhere!”
8:3 [ch. 6:10; Jer. 16:4, 6]“Silence!”

4Hear this, 8:4 [Ps. 14:4]you who trample on the needy
and bring the poor of the land to an end,
5saying, “When will 8:5 See Num. 28:11the new moon be over,
that we may sell grain?
And 8:5 [Neh. 13:15, 16] the Sabbath,
that we may offer wheat for sale,
that we may make 8:5 Ezek. 45:10; Mic. 6:10, 11; See Hos. 12:7the ephah small and the shekel8:5 An ephah was about 3/5 bushel or 22 liters; a shekel was about 2/5 ounce or 11 grams great
and deal deceitfully with false balances,
6that we may buy the poor for 8:6 ch. 2:6silver
and the needy for a pair of sandals
and sell the chaff of the wheat?”

7The Lord has sworn by 8:7 ch. 6:8the pride of Jacob:
“Surely 8:7 Hos. 8:13; 9:9I will never forget any of their deeds.
88:8 [Hos. 4:3] Shall not the land tremble on this account,
and everyone mourn who dwells in it,
8:8 ch. 9:5and all of it rise like the Nile,
and be tossed about 8:8 [Zech. 10:11]and sink again, like the Nile of Egypt?”

9“And on that day,” declares the Lord God,
8:9 Jer. 15:9; Mic. 3:6; Matt. 24:29; [ch. 4:13; 5:8]“I will make the sun go down at noon
and darken the earth in broad daylight.
108:10 [Jer. 7:34; 16:9; Hos. 2:11] I will turn your feasts into mourning
and all your songs into lamentation;
8:10 Isa. 3:24I will bring sackcloth on every waist
8:10 Isa. 3:24and baldness on every head;
8:10 Jer. 6:26; Zech. 12:10I will make it like the mourning for an only son
and the end of it like a bitter day.

11“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God,
“when 8:11 [Isa. 8:20, 21] I will send a famine on the land—
not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,
8:11 [Ps. 74:9; Prov. 29:18; Mic. 3:7]but of hearing the words of the Lord.
128:12 [See ver. 11above] They shall wander from sea to sea,
and from north to east;
they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord,
8:12 [ch. 4:8]but they shall not find it.

138:13 Isa. 51:20“In that day the lovely virgins and the young men
shall 8:13 [Jonah 4:8]faint for thirst.
14Those who swear by 8:14 Deut. 9:21; 1 Kgs. 12:29, 30; Hos. 10:8the Guilt of Samaria,
and say, ‘As your god lives, O Dan,’
and, ‘As 8:14 [Acts 9:2] the Way of 8:14 ch. 5:5Beersheba lives,’
they shall fall, and never rise again.”
