Protection from Evildoers
For the choir director. A psalm of David.
1God, hear my voice when I am in anguish.64:1 Ps 55:2
Protect my life from the terror of the enemy.64:1 Ps 140:1
2Hide me from the scheming of wicked people,64:2 Ps 35:20; 37:12
from the mob of evildoers,64:2 Ps 22:16; 26:5
3who sharpen their tongues like swords
and aim bitter words like arrows,64:3 Ps 52:2; 57:4; Pr 25:18
4shooting from concealed places at the blameless.
They shoot at him suddenly and are not afraid.64:4 Ps 10:8; 11:2
5They adopt64:5 Or They strengthen themselves with an evil plan;
they talk about hiding traps and say,

6They devise crimes and say,
“We have perfected a secret plan.”64:6 Ps 21:11; 83:3
The inner man and the heart are mysterious.64:6 Ps 94:11; Pr 20:5; Jr 17:9–10

7But God will shoot them with arrows;
suddenly, they will be wounded.64:7 Ps 7:13; 45:5; 144:6
8They will be made to stumble;
their own tongues work against them.
All who see them will shake their heads.64:8 Jr 18:16; 48:27; Lm 2:15
9Then everyone will fear
and will tell about God’s work,
for they will understand what he has done.64:9 Ps 40:3

10The righteous one rejoices in the Lord
and takes refuge in him;
all those who are upright in heart
will offer praise.64:10 Ps 32:11; 68:3; 97:11–12
