  • 1 Samuel 18:21 - Saul said, “I will give her to him so that she may become a snare (bad influence, source of trouble) to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” So Saul said to David for a second time, “You shall be my son-in-law today.”
  • 1 Samuel 18:22 - Then Saul commanded his servants, “Speak to David secretly, saying, ‘Listen, the king delights in you, and all his servants love you; now then, become the king’s son-in-law.’ ”
  • 1 Samuel 18:23 - So Saul’s servants spoke these words to David. But David said, “Is it a trivial thing in your sight to become a king’s son-in-law, seeing that I am a poor man and insignificant?”
  • 1 Samuel 18:24 - The servants of Saul told him what David said.
  • 1 Samuel 18:25 - Then Saul said, “This is what you shall say to David: ‘The king wants no dowry except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to take vengeance on the king’s enemies.’ ” Now Saul’s intention was to cause David’s death at the hand of the Philistines.
  • 1 Samuel 18:26 - When his servants told David these words, it pleased him to become the king’s son-in-law. Before the time [for the marriage] arrived,
  • 1 Samuel 18:27 - David arose and went, he and his men, and killed two hundred Philistine men, and David brought their foreskins [as proof of death] and presented every one of them to the king, so that he might become the king’s son-in-law. So Saul gave him Michal, his [younger] daughter, as a wife.
  • 1 Samuel 18:28 - When Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal, his daughter, loved him,
  • 1 Samuel 18:29 - Saul was even more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s constant enemy.
  • 1 Samuel 18:30 - Then the Philistine commanders (princes) came out to battle, and it happened as often as they did, that David acted more wisely and had more success than all Saul’s servants. So his name was highly esteemed.

  • 2 Samuel 15:4 - Moreover Absalom would say, “Oh, that I were appointed judge in the land! Then every man who had a dispute could come to me and I would get justice for him.”
  • 2 Samuel 15:5 - And whenever a man approached to bow down before him, he would put out his hand, take hold of him, and kiss him.
  • 2 Samuel 15:6 - This is how Absalom dealt with everyone in Israel who came to the king for judgment. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
  • 2 Samuel 15:7 - And after four years, Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go and pay my vow which I have made to the Lord at Hebron [my birthplace].
  • 2 Samuel 15:8 - For your servant made a vow while I lived at Geshur in Aram (Syria), ‘If the Lord will in fact bring me back to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord [by offering a sacrifice of thanksgiving].’ ”
  • 2 Samuel 15:9 - And [David] the king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he arose and went to Hebron.
  • 2 Samuel 15:10 - But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, you shall say, ‘Absalom is king in Hebron.’ ”
  • 2 Samuel 15:11 - Then two hundred men from Jerusalem who were invited [as guests to his sacrificial feast] went with Absalom. They went innocently and knew nothing [about his plan against David].
  • 2 Samuel 15:12 - And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, from his city Giloh, while he was offering sacrifices. And the conspiracy grew strong, for the people with Absalom increased continually.
  • 2 Samuel 15:13 - Then a messenger came to David, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absalom.”
  • 2 Samuel 15:14 - David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise, let us flee, or none of us will escape from Absalom! Go in haste, or he will overtake us quickly and bring disaster on us and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”
  • 2 Samuel 15:15 - The king’s servants said to him, “Listen, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king decides.”
  • 2 Samuel 15:16 - So the king left, and all his household with him. But the king left behind ten women who were concubines to take care of the house (palace).
  • 2 Samuel 15:17 - The king left, and all the people with him, and they stopped at the last house.
  • 2 Samuel 15:18 - All of David’s servants passed on beside him, and all the Cherethites, Pelethites and the Gittites, six hundred men who had come with him from Gath, passed on before the king.
  • 2 Samuel 15:19 - Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why should you go with us, too? Go back and stay with the king [of your own country], for you are a foreigner and an exile as well; return to your own place.
  • 2 Samuel 15:20 - You came only yesterday, so should I make you wander with us today while I go where I will? Return and take your brothers back with you also. May lovingkindness and faithfulness be with you.”
