  • John 11:45 - That was a turning point for many of the Jews who were with Mary. They saw what Jesus did, and believed in him. But some went back to the Pharisees and told on Jesus. The high priests and Pharisees called a meeting of the Jewish ruling body. “What do we do now?” they asked. “This man keeps on doing things, creating God-signs. If we let him go on, pretty soon everyone will be believing in him and the Romans will come and remove what little power and privilege we still have.”
  • Matthew 26:69 - All this time, Peter was sitting out in the courtyard. One servant girl came up to him and said, “You were with Jesus the Galilean.”
  • Matthew 26:70 - In front of everybody there, he denied it. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
  • Matthew 26:71 - As he moved over toward the gate, someone else said to the people there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene.”
  • Matthew 26:72 - Again he denied it, salting his denial with an oath: “I swear, I never laid eyes on the man.”
  • Matthew 26:73 - Shortly after that, some bystanders approached Peter. “You’ve got to be one of them. Your accent gives you away.”
  • Matthew 26:74 - Then he got really nervous and swore. “I don’t know the man!” Just then a rooster crowed. Peter remembered what Jesus had said: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” He went out and cried and cried and cried.
  • John 9:34 - They said, “You’re nothing but dirt! How dare you take that tone with us!” Then they threw him out in the street.
  • Isaiah 57:11 - “Who talked you into the pursuit of this nonsense, leaving me high and dry, forgetting you ever knew me? Because I don’t yell and make a scene, do you think I don’t exist? I’ll go over, detail by detail, all your ‘righteous’ attempts at religion, and expose the absurdity of it all. Go ahead, cry for help to your collection of no-gods: A good wind will blow them away. They’re smoke, nothing but smoke. “But anyone who runs to me for help will inherit the land, will end up owning my holy mountain!” * * *
  • 1 Peter 4:12 - Friends, when life gets really difficult, don’t jump to the conclusion that God isn’t on the job. Instead, be glad that you are in the very thick of what Christ experienced. This is a spiritual refining process, with glory just around the corner.
  • 1 Peter 4:14 - If you’re abused because of Christ, count yourself fortunate. It’s the Spirit of God and his glory in you that brought you to the notice of others. If they’re on you because you broke the law or disturbed the peace, that’s a different matter. But if it’s because you’re a Christian, don’t give it a second thought. Be proud of the distinguished status reflected in that name!
  • John 7:50 - Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus earlier and was both a ruler and a Pharisee, spoke up. “Does our Law decide about a man’s guilt without first listening to him and finding out what he is doing?”
  • Isaiah 66:5 - But listen to what God has to say to you who reverently respond to his Word: “Your own families hate you and turn you out because of me. They taunt you, ‘Let us see God’s glory! If God’s so great, why aren’t you happy?’ But they’re the ones who are going to end up shamed.” * * *
  • Matthew 10:32 - “Stand up for me against world opinion and I’ll stand up for you before my Father in heaven. If you turn tail and run, do you think I’ll cover for you?
  • Proverbs 29:25 - The fear of human opinion disables; trusting in God protects you from that.
  • Isaiah 51:7 - “Listen now, you who know right from wrong, you who hold my teaching inside you: Pay no attention to insults, and when mocked don’t let it get you down. Those insults and mockeries are moth-eaten, from brains that are termite-ridden, But my setting-things-right lasts, my salvation goes on and on and on.”
