  • Hebrews 12:10 - For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness.
  • Hebrews 12:11 - No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.
  • James 1:2 - Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.
  • James 1:3 - For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.
  • James 1:4 - So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.
  • Luke 6:25 - What sorrow awaits you who are fat and prosperous now, for a time of awful hunger awaits you. What sorrow awaits you who laugh now, for your laughing will turn to mourning and sorrow.
  • John 16:20 - I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy.
  • John 16:21 - It will be like a woman suffering the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives way to joy because she has brought a new baby into the world.
  • John 16:22 - So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy.
  • Daniel 10:19 - “Don’t be afraid,” he said, “for you are very precious to God. Peace! Be encouraged! Be strong!” As he spoke these words to me, I suddenly felt stronger and said to him, “Please speak to me, my lord, for you have strengthened me.”

  • Romans 5:3 - We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance.
  • Romans 5:4 - And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.
  • James 4:8 - Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.
  • James 4:9 - Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy.
  • James 4:10 - Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.
  • 2 Corinthians 7:9 - Now I am glad I sent it, not because it hurt you, but because the pain caused you to repent and change your ways. It was the kind of sorrow God wants his people to have, so you were not harmed by us in any way.
  • 2 Corinthians 7:10 - For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.
  • 2 Corinthians 7:11 - Just see what this godly sorrow produced in you! Such earnestness, such concern to clear yourselves, such indignation, such alarm, such longing to see me, such zeal, and such a readiness to punish wrong. You showed that you have done everything necessary to make things right.
