Into Your Hand I Commit My Spirit
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

131:1 For ver. 1-3, see Ps. 71:1-3In you, O Lord, do I 31:1 See Ps. 11:1take refuge;
31:1 ver. 17let me never be put to shame;
in your 31:1 Ps. 143:1righteousness deliver me!
2Incline your ear to me;
rescue me speedily!
Be 31:2 See Ps. 18:2a rock of 31:2 [Ps. 91:2]refuge for me,
a strong fortress to save me!

3For you are my rock and my fortress;
and for your 31:3 See Ps. 23:3name’s sake you lead me and guide me;
4you 31:4 Ps. 25:15take me out of 31:4 See Job 18:8the net they have hidden for me,
for you are my 31:4 Ps. 43:2refuge.
531:5 Cited Luke 23:46; [Acts 7:59] Into your hand I commit my spirit;
you have redeemed me, O Lord, 31:5 Deut. 32:4faithful God.

6I 31:6 Ps. 26:5hate31:6 Masoretic Text; one Hebrew manuscript, Septuagint, Syriac, Jerome You hate those who pay 31:6 Jonah 2:8regard to worthless 31:6 Deut. 32:21; Jer. 8:19; 14:22idols,
but I trust in the Lord.
7I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love,
because you have seen my affliction;
you have 31:7 See Ps. 1:6known the distress of my soul,
8and you have not 31:8 [Deut. 32:30] delivered me into the hand of the enemy;
you have set my feet in 31:8 See Job 36:16a broad place.

9Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am 31:9 Ps. 66:14in distress;
31:9 See Ps. 6:7my eye is wasted from grief;
my soul and my body also.
10For my life is spent with sorrow,
and my years with sighing;
my strength fails because of my iniquity,
and 31:10 Ps. 6:2; 32:3; 38:3; 102:3my bones waste away.

11Because of all my adversaries I have become 31:11 [Ps. 41:7, 8; Isa. 53:3] a reproach,
especially to my 31:11 See Job 19:13, 14neighbors,
and an object of dread to my acquaintances;
those who see me in the street 31:11 [Matt. 26:56; Mark 14:50]flee from me.
12I have been 31:12 Ps. 88:5; Eccles. 9:5forgotten like one who is dead;
I have become like 31:12 Isa. 30:14a broken vessel.
13For I 31:13 Jer. 20:10hear the whispering of many—
terror on every side!—
31:13 [Matt. 27:1]; See 2 Sam. 17:1-4as they scheme together against me,
as they plot to take my life.

14But I 31:14 ver. 1, 6trust in you, O Lord;
I say, “You are my God.”
15My 31:15 1 Chr. 29:30; Job 24:1times are in your hand;
31:15 Ps. 7:1rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors!
1631:16 See Ps. 4:6Make your face shine on your servant;
save me in your steadfast love!
17O Lord, 31:17 ver. 1let me not be put to shame,
for I call upon you;
let the wicked be put to shame;
let them go 31:17 1 Sam. 2:9; [Ps. 94:17; 115:17]silently to Sheol.
18Let the lying lips be mute,
which 31:18 [Jude 15] speak 31:18 Ps. 17:10insolently against the righteous
in pride and contempt.

19Oh, how abundant is your goodness,
which you have stored up for those who fear you
and worked for those who take refuge in you,
31:19 Ps. 23:5in the sight of the children of mankind!
20In 31:20 See Ps. 32:7the cover of your presence you hide them
from the plots of men;
you 31:20 See Ps. 27:5store them in your shelter
from the strife of tongues.

21Blessed be the Lord,
for he has wondrously 31:21 Ps. 17:7shown his steadfast love to me
when I was in 31:21 [1 Sam. 23:7]a besieged city.
22I had said in my 31:22 Ps. 116:11; [2 Sam. 15:14] alarm,31:22 Or in my haste
“I am 31:22 Isa. 38:11, 12; Lam. 3:54cut off from 31:22 Jonah 2:4your sight.”
But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy
when I cried to you for help.

23Love the Lord, all you his 31:23 Ps. 30:4saints!
The Lord preserves the faithful
but abundantly 31:23 Deut. 32:41repays the one who acts in pride.
2431:24 See Ps. 27:14Be strong, and let your heart take courage,
all you who wait for the Lord!
