And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him.
And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for 17:4 [Mal. 4:5]Elijah.”
He was still speaking when, behold, 17:5 2 Pet. 1:17; [Ex. 24:15, 16] a bright cloud overshadowed them, and 17:5 2 Pet. 1:17; [Ex. 24:15, 16] a voice from the cloud said, 17:5 See ch. 3:17“This is my beloved Son,17:5 Or my Son, my (or the) Beloved with whom I am well pleased; 17:5 Acts 3:22listen to him.”
When 17:6 2 Pet. 1:18the disciples heard this, 17:6 [Gen. 17:3; Ezek. 1:28; Rev. 1:17]they fell on their faces and were terrified.
But Jesus came and 17:7 Dan. 8:18; 10:10, 18touched them, saying, “Rise, and 17:7 ch. 14:27have no fear.”

And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say 17:10 See ch. 11:14; Mal. 4:5, 6that first Elijah must come?”
He answered, “Elijah does come, and 17:11 Luke 1:16, 17; [Acts 1:6; 3:21]he will restore all things.

And I brought him to your disciples, and 17:16 [ch. 10:1; Mark 6:7; Luke 10:17]they could not heal him.”
And Jesus answered, “O faithless and 17:17 Phil. 2:15; [John 20:27] twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? 17:17 [John 14:9]How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.”

Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?”
He said to them, 17:20 [John 11:40]; See ch. 6:30“Because of your little faith. For 17:20 ch. 21:21, 22; Mark 11:23truly, I say to you, 17:20 Luke 17:6; [ch. 13:31] if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, 17:20 ver. 9; [1 Cor. 13:2] you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and 17:20 Mark 9:23nothing will be impossible for you.”17:20 Some manuscripts insert verse 21: But this kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting

He said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, 17:25 ch. 18:12; 21:28“What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or 17:25 ch. 22:17, 19; Mark 12:14; Rom. 13:7tax? From their sons or from others?”
And when he said, “From others,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free.
