Temptations to Sin
1And he said to his disciples, 17:1 Matt. 18:7“Temptations to sin17:1 Greek Stumbling blocksare 17:1 See Matt. 13:41sure to come, but 17:1 ch. 22:22woe to the one through whom they come!
217:2 Matt. 18:6; Mark 9:42It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.17:2 Greek stumble
3Pay attention to yourselves! 17:3 Matt. 18:15, 21, 22If your brother sins, 17:3 Lev. 19:17rebuke him, and if he repents, 17:3 See Matt. 6:14forgive him,
4and if he sins against you 17:4 [Matt. 18:21]seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”
Increase Our Faith
517:5 See Mark 6:30The apostles said to the Lord, 17:5 [Mark 9:24]“Increase our faith!”
6And the Lord said, 17:6 Matt. 17:20“If you had faith like 17:6 Matt. 13:31a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this 17:6 [ch. 19:4 (Gk.)]mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.
Unworthy Servants
7“Will any one of you who has a servant17:7 Or bondservant; also verse 9plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and recline at table’?
8Will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, and 17:8 John 13:4; [ch. 12:35, 37]dress properly,17:8 Greek gird yourselfand serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink’?
9Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded?
10So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are 17:10 Matt. 25:30; [Job 22:2, 3; 35:7; Rom. 11:35]unworthy servants;17:10 Or bondservantswe have only done what was our duty.’”
Jesus Cleanses Ten Lepers
1117:11 See ch. 9:51On the way to Jerusalem 17:11 [John 4:3, 4]; See Matt. 19:1he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee.
12And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers,17:12 Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases; see Leviticus 1317:12 See Lev. 13:45, 46who stood at a distance
13and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.”
14When he saw them he said to them, “Go and 17:14 ch. 5:14; Lev. 13:2–14:32; Matt. 8:4show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went they were cleansed.
15Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, 17:15 See ch. 13:13praising God with a loud voice;
16and 17:16 ch. 5:12; Num. 16:22; [Matt. 26:39] he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving him thanks. Now he was 17:16 See Matt. 10:5a Samaritan.
17Then Jesus answered, “Were not 17:17 ver. 12ten cleansed? Where are the nine?
18Was no one found to return and 17:18 See John 9:24give praise to God except this 17:18 Isa. 66:5foreigner?”
19And he said to him, “Rise and go your way; 17:19 See Mark 10:52your faith has 17:19 See Mark 10:52made you well.”17:19 Or has saved you
The Coming of the Kingdom
20Being asked by the Pharisees 17:20 ch. 19:11; Acts 1:6when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, “The kingdom of God 17:20 [ch. 12:39]is not coming in ways that can be observed,
21nor 17:21 [ver. 23]will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.”17:21 Or within you, or within your grasp
22And he said to the disciples, 17:22 ch. 5:35; 21:6; Matt. 9:15; Mark 2:20; [ch. 19:43; 23:29; John 4:21] “The days are coming when you will desire 17:22 John 8:56; [Amos 5:18]to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.
2317:23 ch. 21:8; Matt. 24:23; Mark 13:21; [ver. 21]And they will say to you, ‘Look, there!’ or ‘Look, here!’ Do not go out or follow them.
2417:24 Matt. 24:27For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be 17:24 See 1 Cor. 1:8in his day.17:24 Some manuscripts omit in his day
25But first 17:25 See ch. 13:33; Matt. 16:21; 17:22; Mark 8:31he must suffer many things and 17:25 See ch. 13:33; Matt. 16:21; 17:22; Mark 8:31be rejected by this generation.
2617:26 Gen. 6:5; 7:7; Matt. 24:37; [1 Thess. 5:3] Just as it was in the days of 17:26 Heb. 11:7; 1 Pet. 3:20; 2 Pet. 2:5Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man.
2717:27 Matt. 24:38, 39They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.
28Likewise, just as it was in the days of 17:28 2 Pet. 2:7Lot—they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building,
2917:29 Gen. 19:16, 24; 2 Pet. 2:6but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all—
30so will it be 17:30 1 Cor. 1:7; 2 Thess. 1:7; 1 Pet. 1:7, 13; 4:13; [Matt. 16:27; 24:44]on the day when the Son of Man is revealed.
31On that day, 17:31 ch. 21:21; Matt. 24:17, 18; Mark 13:15, 16let the one who is on 17:31 See ch. 5:19the housetop, with his goods in the house, not come down to take them away, and likewise let the one who is in the field not turn back.
3217:32 Gen. 19:26Remember Lot’s wife.
3317:33 See Matt. 10:39Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will 17:33 Acts 7:19 (Gk.)keep it.
34I tell you, in that night there will be two in one bed. One will be taken and the other left.
3517:35 Matt. 24:41There will be two women 17:35 Ex. 11:5; Isa. 47:2grinding together. One will be taken and the other left.”17:35 Some manuscripts add verse 36: Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left
37And they said to him, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, 17:37 Matt. 24:28; [Job 39:30]“Where the corpse17:37 Greek bodyis, there the vultures17:37 Or eagleswill gather.”
