Israel Will Reap the Whirlwind

1Set 8:1 ch. 5:8the trumpet to your lips!

One 8:1 See Deut. 28:49like a vulture is over the house of the Lord,

because 8:1 ch. 6:7they have transgressed my covenant

and rebelled against my law.

2To me they cry,

8:2 See Matt. 7:21-23“My God, we—Israel—know you.”

3Israel has spurned the good;

the enemy shall pursue him.

48:4 ch. 7:7; 1 Kgs. 12:20They made kings, 8:4 [2 Chr. 13:5]but not through me.

They set up princes, but I knew it not.

With their silver and gold they made idols

for their own destruction.

58:5 ch. 10:5, 6; [1 Kgs. 12:28] I have8:5 Hebrew He has spurned your calf, O Samaria.

My anger burns against them.

8:5 [Jer. 13:27]How long will they be incapable of innocence?

6For it is from Israel;

a craftsman made it;

it is not God.

8:6 [Mic. 1:6, 7]shall be broken to pieces.8:6 Or shall go up in flames

7For 8:7 [ch. 10:12, 13] they sow the wind,

and they shall reap the whirlwind.

The standing grain has no heads;

it shall yield no flour;

if it were to yield,

8:7 [ch. 7:9]strangers would devour it.

already they are among the nations

as 8:8 Jer. 22:28a useless vessel.

9For 8:9 See ch. 5:13they have gone up to Assyria,

8:9 [Jer. 2:24]a wild donkey wandering alone;

Ephraim has hired lovers.

10Though they hire allies among the nations,

I will soon gather them up.

And 8:10 See Ezek. 26:7the king and princes 8:10 [ch. 4:7, 10]shall soon writhe

because of the tribute.

11Because Ephraim 8:11 ch. 10:1; 12:11has multiplied altars for sinning,

they have become to him altars for sinning.

128:12 [Deut. 4:6, 8]Were I to write for him my laws by the ten thousands,

they would be regarded as a strange thing.

13As for my sacrificial offerings,

8:13 Jer. 7:21; [Amos 4:4] they sacrifice meat and eat it,

but the Lord does not accept them.

8:13 ch. 9:9; Amos 8:7Now he will remember their iniquity

and punish their sins;

8:13 ch. 9:3; Deut. 28:68; [ch. 11:5]they shall return to Egypt.

14For 8:14 See ch. 6:4Israel has forgotten 8:14 Isa. 17:7his Maker

and 8:14 [Amos 5:11] built palaces,

and 8:14 See ch. 6:4Judah has multiplied fortified cities;

so 8:14 Amos 2:5I will send a fire upon his cities,

and it shall devour her strongholds.
