The Death of John the Baptist

2and he said to his servants, 14:2 ch. 16:14“This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.”

3For 14:3 Luke 3:19, 20Herod had seized John and bound him and 14:3 ch. 11:2; John 3:24put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,14:3 Some manuscripts his brother’s wife

4because John had been saying to him, 14:4 Lev. 18:16; 20:21“It is not lawful for you to have her.”

5And though he wanted to put him to death, 14:5 ch. 21:26; [ch. 21:46] he feared the people, because they held him to be 14:5 See ch. 11:9a prophet.

6But when Herod’s 14:6 Gen. 40:20birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod,

7so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.

8Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.”

9And the king was sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given.

10He sent and had John beheaded in the prison,

11and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.

12And 14:12 See ch. 9:14his disciples came and took the body and buried it, and they went and told Jesus.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

13Now when Jesus heard this, 14:13 For ver. 13-21, see Mark 6:32-44; Luke 9:10-17; John 6:1-13; [ch. 15:32-38; 16:9; Mark 8:2-9]he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns.

14When he went ashore he 14:14 [ch. 9:36]saw a great crowd, and 14:14 [ch. 9:36]he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

15Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; 14:15 ver. 22; [ch. 15:23]send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”

16But Jesus said, “They need not go away; 14:16 [2 Kgs. 4:42-44]you give them something to eat.”

17They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.”

18And he said, “Bring them here to me.”

19Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, 14:19 Mark 7:34; John 11:41; 17:1he looked up to heaven and 14:19 ch. 26:26; 1 Sam. 9:13; Mark 8:7; 14:22; Luke 24:30; [1 Cor. 14:16]said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.

20And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over.

21And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Jesus Walks on the Water

2214:22 For ver. 22-33, see Mark 6:45-51; John 6:15-21Immediately he 14:22 [ch. 8:18]made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

23And after he had dismissed the crowds, 14:23 Luke 6:12; 9:28; [Mark 1:35; Luke 5:16] he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When 14:23 [Mark 13:35]evening came, he was there alone,

24but the boat by this time was a long way14:24 Greek many stadia, a stadion was about 607 feet or 185 meters from the land,14:24 Some manuscripts was out on the sea beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them.

25And 14:25 [See ver. 22above]in the fourth watch of the night14:25 That is, between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. he came to them, walking on the sea.

26But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, 14:26 [Luke 24:37]they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear.

27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, 14:27 ch. 17:7; [Deut. 31:6; Isa. 41:13; 43:1, 2; John 16:33]“Take heart; it is I. 14:27 ch. 17:7; [Deut. 31:6; Isa. 41:13; 43:1, 2; John 16:33]Do not be afraid.”

28And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”

29He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and 14:29 [John 21:7]walked on the water and came to Jesus.

30But when he saw the wind,14:30 Some manuscripts strong wind he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, 14:30 [ch. 8:25, 26]“Lord, save me.”

31Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, 14:31 See ch. 6:30“O you of little faith, why did you 14:31 [James 1:6]doubt?”

32And when they got into the boat, 14:32 [See ver. 30above]the wind ceased.

33And 14:33 ver. 22those in the boat 14:33 See ch. 8:2worshiped him, saying, 14:33 [John 6:14] “Truly you are 14:33 ch. 16:16; 26:63; Ps. 2:7; Mark 1:1; Luke 1:35; 4:41; John 1:49; 10:36; 11:27; 20:31; [ch. 3:17]the Son of God.”

Jesus Heals the Sick in Gennesaret

35And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent around to all that region and 14:35 ch. 4:24brought to him all who were sick

36and implored him that they might only touch 14:36 See ch. 9:20the fringe of his garment. And 14:36 Mark 3:10; Luke 6:19; [Acts 5:15]as many as touched it were made well.
