Commissioning the Twelve

2Then He sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. Mt 10:5,7-8; Lk 4:43; 9:11,60; 10:1,9
3“Take nothing for the road,” Mt 10:9-15; Mk 6:8-11; Lk 10:4-12; 22:35 He told them, “no walking stick, Mk 6:8 no traveling bag, no bread, no money; and don’t take an extra shirt.
4Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there.
5If they do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.” Neh 5:13; Ac 13:51; 18:6
6So they went out and traveled from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing everywhere.
Herod’s Desire to See Jesus
7Herod the tetrarch Lk 3:1,19; 13:31; 23:7; Ac 13:1 heard about everything that was going on. Mt 14:1-2; Mk 6:14-16 He was perplexed, because some said that John had been raised from the dead,
8some that Elijah had appeared, Mt 11:14; 16:14; 17:3-4,10-12; Lk 1:17; 4:26 and others that one of the ancient prophets had risen. Mk 6:15
9“I beheaded John,” Herod said, “but who is this I hear such things about? ” And he wanted to see Him. Lk 23:8
Feeding 5,000
10When the apostles returned, Mt 14:13-21; Mk 6:32-44; Jn 6:5-13 they reported to Jesus all that they had done. Mk 6:30 He took them along and withdrew privately to a Other mss add deserted place near a town called Bethsaida. Mt 11:21; Mk 8:22; Jn 1:44; 12:21

12Late in the day, Lit When the day began to decline Lk 24:29 the Twelve approached and said to Him, “Send the crowd away, Mt 15:23 so they can go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find food and lodging, because we are in a deserted place here.”
13“You give them something to eat,” He told them.
“We have no more than five loaves Mt 16:9; Mk 8:19 and two fish,” they said, “unless we go and buy food for all these people.”
14(For about 5,000 men were there.)
Then He told His disciples, “Have them sit down Lit them recline in groups of about 50 each.”
15They did so, and had them all sit down.
16Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, Mk 7:34; Jn 11:41; 17:1 He blessed and broke them. Mt 26:26; Mk 8:7; 14:22; Lk 24:30 He kept giving them to the disciples to set before the crowd.
17Everyone ate and was filled. Then they picked up Lit Then were picked up by them 12 baskets of leftover pieces.
Peter’s Confession of the Messiah
18While He was praying in private Mt 16:13-16; Mk 8:27-29 and His disciples were with Him, He asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am? ”
19They answered, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, that one of the ancient prophets has come back.” Lit has risen Lk 9:7-8
20“But you,” He asked them, “who do you say that I am? ”
Peter answered, “God’s Messiah! ” Mt 1:17; Lk 23:35; Ac 3:18; Rv 12:10
His Death and Resurrection Predicted
21But He strictly warned and instructed them to tell this to no one, Mt 12:16; 16:20; Mk 7:36; 8:30; 9:9; Lk 5:14; 8:56

Take Up Your Cross

24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of Me will save it. Lk 17:33; Jn 12:25

27I tell you the truth: There are some standing here who will not taste death Jn 8:52; Heb 2:9 until they see the kingdom of God.” Mt 10:23; 23:36; 24:34; Mk 13:30; Lk 21:31-32
The Transfiguration
28About eight days after these words, Mt 17:1-8; Mk 9:2-8 He took along Peter, John, and James Mk 14:33; Lk 8:51 and went up on the mountain to pray. Mt 14:23; Lk 3:21; 5:16; 6:12; 9:18
29As He was praying, the appearance of His face changed, Mk 16:12 and His clothes became dazzling white. Ps 104:2; Dn 7:9; Mt 28:3
30Suddenly, two men were talking with Him — Moses and Elijah.
31They appeared in glory and were speaking of His death, Or departure ; Gk exodus which He was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.
32Peter and those with him were in a deep sleep, Lit were weighed down with sleep Gn 2:21; 15:12; 1Sm 26:12; Dn 8:18; 10:9; Mt 26:43 and when they became fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who were standing with Him.
33As the two men were departing from Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, Lk 5:5; 9:49 it’s good for us to be here! Let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” — not knowing what he said. Mk 14:40
34While he was saying this, a cloud appeared and overshadowed Lk 1:35; Ac 5:15 them. They became afraid as they entered the cloud.
35Then a voice came from the cloud, Ex 24:15-16; 2Pt 1:16-18 saying:
This is My Son, Ex 4:23; Ps 2:7; Hs 11:1; Ac 13:33; Heb 1:5 the Chosen One; Other mss read the Beloved Ps 89:3; Is 42:1; Lk 23:35

36After the voice had spoken, only Jesus was found. They kept silent, and in those days told no one what they had seen.
The Power of Faith over a Demon
37The next day, Mt 17:14-18; Mk 9:14-27 when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him.
38Just then a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, because he’s my only child. Lk 7:12
39Often a spirit seizes him; suddenly he shrieks, and it throws him into convulsions until he foams at the mouth; Lit convulsions with foam wounding Or bruising, or mauling him, it hardly ever leaves him.
40I begged Your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.” Lk 9:1; 10:17
41Jesus replied, “You unbelieving and rebellious Or corrupt, or perverted, or twisted ; Dt 32:5 generation! Php 2:15 How long will I be with you and put up with you? Jn 14:9 Bring your son here.”
42As the boy was still approaching, the demon knocked him down and threw him into severe convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, cured the boy, Zch 3:2; Mt 8:26; Mk 1:25; Lk 4:35,39; Jd 9 and gave him back to his father. Lk 7:15
43And they were all astonished at the greatness of God. 2Pt 1:16
The Second Prediction of His Death
While everyone was amazed at all the things He was doing, Mt 17:22-23; Mk 9:30-32 He told His disciples,
44“Let these words sink in: Lit Put these words in your ears The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.” Lk 9:22
45But they did not understand this statement; Mk 6:52; Lk 2:50; 18:34; 24:25; Jn 10:6; 12:16; 16:17-19 it was concealed from them so that they could not grasp it, Lk 18:34; 24:16 and they were afraid to ask Him about it. Lit about this statement
Who Is the Greatest?
46Then an argument started among them about who would be the greatest of them. Mt 18:1-5; Mk 9:33-37; Lk 22:24
47But Jesus, knowing the thoughts of their hearts, Mt 9:4 took a little child and had him stand next to Him.
48He told them, “Whoever welcomes Or receives, throughout the verse this little child in My name welcomes Me. And whoever welcomes Me welcomes Him who sent Me. Mt 10:40,42; Lk 10:16; Jn 13:20 For whoever is least among you — this one is great.” Lk 22:26
In His Name
49John responded, Mk 9:38-40 “Master, we saw someone driving out demons in Your name, Mt 7:22; 12:27; Mk 16:17; Lk 10:17; Ac 19:13 and we tried to stop him because he does not follow us.” Nm 11:28
50“Don’t stop him,” Jesus told him, “because whoever is not against you is for you.” Other mss read against us is for us Mt 12:30; Lk 11:23
The Journey to Jerusalem
51When the days were coming to a close for Him to be taken up, His ascension Mk 16:19 He determined Lit He stiffened His face to go ; Is 50:7 2Kg 12:17; Is 50:7; Jr 42:15 to journey to Jerusalem. Lk 13:22; 17:11; 18:31; 19:11,28
52He sent messengers ahead of Him, Lk 10:1 and on the way they entered a village of the Samaritans Mt 10:5 to make preparations for Him.
53But they did not welcome Him, because He determined to journey to Jerusalem. Jn 4:9,20
54When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them? ” Other mss add as Elijah also did 2Kg 1:9-16; Rv 13:13
55But He turned and rebuked them, Other mss add and said, “You don’t know what kind of spirit you belong to. 56 For the Son of Man did not come to destroy people’s lives but to save them,”
56and they went to another village.
Following Jesus
57As they were traveling on the road someone said to Him, Mt 8:19-22 “I will follow You wherever You go! ”
58Jesus told him, “Foxes have dens, and birds of the sky Wild birds, as opposed to domestic birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.”
59Then He said to another, “Follow Me.”
“Lord,” he said, “first let me go bury my father.” Not necessarily meaning his father was already dead
60But He told him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.” Lk 8:1; 9:2; 16:16
61Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord, but first let me go and say good-bye to those at my house.” 1Kg 19:20
62But Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
