The Temptation of Jesus
1Then Jesus4:1–13 Mt 4:1–11; Mk 1:12–13 left the Jordan,4:1 Lk 3:3 full of the Holy Spirit,4:1 Lk 1:15,41,67; Ac 2:4; 4:8,31; 9:17; 11:24; 13:9 and was led by the Spirit4:1 Gl 5:18 in the wilderness
2for forty days4:2 Ex 24:18; 34:28; Dt 9:9,11,18,25; 10:10 to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over, he was hungry.
3The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
5So he took him up4:5 Other mss read So the devil took him up on a high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world4:5 Is 23:17; Jr 25:26 in a moment of time.
6The devil said to him, “I will give you their splendor and all this authority, because it has been given over to me,4:6 1Jn 5:19 and I can give it to anyone I want.
7If you, then, will worship me,4:7 Lit will fall down before me all will be yours.”
9So he took him to Jerusalem, had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here.
10For it is written:
He will give his angels orders concerning you,
they will support you with their hands,
so that you will not strike
your foot against a stone.”4:11Ps 91:124:11 Ps 91:12
13After the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.
Ministry in Galilee
14Then Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit,4:14 Mt 4:12 and news about him spread throughout the entire vicinity.4:14 Mt 4:24; 9:26,31; Mk 1:28,45; Lk 4:37; 5:15; 9:60
Rejection at Nazareth
16He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up.4:16 Lk 2:39,51 As usual, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day4:16 Mt 13:54; Mk 6:1–2 and stood up to read.4:16 Ac 13:14–16
17The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him, and unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written:
18 The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me 4:18 Other mss add to heal the brokenhearted,
to proclaim release 4:18 Or freedom, or forgiveness to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set free the oppressed,
20He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down.4:20 Mt 26:55 And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.
24He also said, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.4:24 Mt 13:57; Mk 6:4; Jn 4:44
25But I say to you, there were certainly many widows in Israel in Elijah’s days,4:25 1Kg 17:1; 18:1; Jms 5:17 when the sky was shut up for three years and six months while a great famine came over all the land.
28When they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was enraged.
29They got up, drove him out of town,4:29 Nm 15:35; Ac 7:58; Heb 13:12 and brought him to the edge of the hill that their town was built on, intending to hurl him over the cliff.
Driving Out an Unclean Spirit
31Then he went down to Capernaum,4:31–37 Mk 1:21–28 a town in Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbath.
32They were astonished at his teaching because his message had authority.4:32 Mt 7:28–29; Mk 1:22; Jn 7:46
33In the synagogue there was a man with an unclean demonic spirit who cried out with a loud voice,4:33–37 Mk 1:23–28
36Amazement came over them all, and they were saying to one another, “What is this message? For he commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out!”
37And news about him began to go out to every place in the vicinity.
Healings at Capernaum
38After he left the synagogue, he entered Simon’s house.4:38–41 Mt 8:14–17; Mk 1:29–34 Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked him about her.4:38 1Co 9:5
40When the sun was setting, all those who had anyone sick with various diseases brought them to him. As he laid his hands on each one of them, he healed them.4:40 Mt 4:23; Mk 5:23
42When it was day, he went out and made his way to a deserted place.4:42–43 Mt 14:13; Mk 1:35–38,45; 6:31–32; Lk 9:12 But the crowds were searching for him. They came to him and tried to keep him from leaving them.
43But he said to them, “It is necessary for me to proclaim the good news about the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because I was sent for this purpose.”
