Jesus and the Samaritan Woman
When Jesus4:1 Other mss read the Lord learned that the Pharisees4:1 Mk 7:3 had heard he was making4:1 Mt 28:19–20 and baptizing more disciples than John4:1 Mk 1:4
(though Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were),
so he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar near the property4:5 Lit piece of land that Jacob4:5 Ps 22:23; Mt 1:2; Lk 1:33 had given his son Joseph.4:5 Gn 30:24; 33:19; 48:22; 49:22
“Give me a drink,” Jesus said to her,
because his disciples had gone into town to buy food.
“Sir,”4:11 Lk 10:1 said the woman, “you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do you get this ‘living water’?
Jesus said, “Everyone who drinks from this water will get thirsty again.
But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again.4:14 Jn 6:35; 7:37; 1Co 4:11; Rv 7:16; 21:6; 22:17 In fact, the water I will give him will become a well4:14 Or spring4:14 Jms 3:11 of water springing up in him for eternal life.”4:14 Jn 12:25; Ac 13:48; Rm 8:2; 1Jn 2:25
“Sir,” the woman said to him, “give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and come here to draw water.”
“Go call your husband,” he told her, “and come back here.”
“I don’t have a husband,” she answered.
“You have correctly said, ‘I don’t have a husband,’” Jesus said.
“For you’ve had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”
“Sir,” the woman replied, “I see that you are a prophet.
Jesus told her, “Believe me, woman, an hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews.4:22 Gn 12:1–7; Is 2:3; Mal 1:11; Mt 15:24; Jn 11:36; Rm 3:1–2; 9:4–5; 15:8–9
But an hour is coming, and is now here,4:23 Jn 5:25–29; 16:32 when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and in truth.4:23 Or in spirit and truth, also in v. 24 Yes, the Father wants such people to worship him.
The Ripened Harvest
Just then his disciples arrived, and they were amazed that he was talking with a woman. Yet no one said, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
Then the woman left her water jar, went into town, and told the people,
But he said, “I have food to eat that you don’t know about.”
The disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought him something to eat?”
“My food is to do the will of him 4:34 Eph 1:9; 1Jn 2:17 who sent me4:34 Jn 5:30 and to finish his work,”4:34 Jn 5:36 Jesus told them.
“Don’t you say, ‘There are still four more months, and then comes the harvest’? Listen to what I’m telling you: Open4:35 Lit Raise your eyes and look at the fields, because they are ready4:35 Lit white for harvest.
The reaper is already receiving pay and gathering fruit for eternal life,4:36 Mk 10:17; Jn 12:25; Ac 13:48 so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together.
For in this case the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’4:37 Lv 26:16; Dt 20:6; Jb 31:8; Mc 6:15; Mt 25:24; Lk 19:21
I sent you to reap what you didn’t labor for; others have labored, and you have benefited from4:38 Lit you have entered into their labor.”
The Savior of the World
Now many Samaritans4:39 Lk 9:52; Ac 1:8 from that town believed in him because of what the woman said4:39 Lit because of the woman’s word when she testified,4:39 Jn 15:26; Ac 26:5 “He told me everything I ever did.”
So when the Samaritans came to him,4:40 Mk 1:45 they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days.
Many more believed because of what he said.4:41 Lit because of his word
A Galilean Welcome
(Jesus himself had testified4:44 Jn 15:26; Ac 26:5 that a prophet has no honor in his own country.4:44 Mt 13:57; Mk 6:4; Lk 4:24)
The Second Sign: Healing an Official’s Son
He went again to Cana4:46 Jn 2:1,11; 21:2 of Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. There was a certain royal official whose son was ill at Capernaum.4:46 Lk 10:15
“Go,” Jesus told him, “your son will live.” The man believed what4:50 Lit the word Jesus said to him and departed.
While he was still going down, his servants met him saying that his boy was alive.
He asked them at what time he got better. “Yesterday at one in the afternoon4:52 Lit at the seventh hour the fever left him,” they answered.
