  • Mark 6:21 - Herodias’s chance finally came on Herod’s birthday. He gave a party for his high government officials, army officers, and the leading citizens of Galilee.
  • Mark 6:22 - Then his daughter, also named Herodias, came in and performed a dance that greatly pleased Herod and his guests. “Ask me for anything you like,” the king said to the girl, “and I will give it to you.”
  • Mark 6:23 - He even vowed, “I will give you whatever you ask, up to half my kingdom!”
  • Mark 6:24 - She went out and asked her mother, “What should I ask for?” Her mother told her, “Ask for the head of John the Baptist!”
  • Mark 6:25 - So the girl hurried back to the king and told him, “I want the head of John the Baptist, right now, on a tray!”
  • Mark 6:26 - Then the king deeply regretted what he had said; but because of the vows he had made in front of his guests, he couldn’t refuse her.
  • Mark 6:27 - So he immediately sent an executioner to the prison to cut off John’s head and bring it to him. The soldier beheaded John in the prison,
  • Mark 6:28 - brought his head on a tray, and gave it to the girl, who took it to her mother.
  • Mark 6:29 - When John’s disciples heard what had happened, they came to get his body and buried it in a tomb.

  • Luke 3:17 - He is ready to separate the chaff from the wheat with his winnowing fork. Then he will clean up the threshing area, gathering the wheat into his barn but burning the chaff with never-ending fire.”

  • Luke 3:19 - John also publicly criticized Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, for marrying Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for many other wrongs he had done.

  • Mark 6:19 - So Herodias bore a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But without Herod’s approval she was powerless,
  • Mark 6:20 - for Herod respected John; and knowing that he was a good and holy man, he protected him. Herod was greatly disturbed whenever he talked with John, but even so, he liked to listen to him.
  • Mark 6:21 - Herodias’s chance finally came on Herod’s birthday. He gave a party for his high government officials, army officers, and the leading citizens of Galilee.
  • Mark 6:22 - Then his daughter, also named Herodias, came in and performed a dance that greatly pleased Herod and his guests. “Ask me for anything you like,” the king said to the girl, “and I will give it to you.”
  • Mark 6:23 - He even vowed, “I will give you whatever you ask, up to half my kingdom!”
  • Mark 6:24 - She went out and asked her mother, “What should I ask for?” Her mother told her, “Ask for the head of John the Baptist!”
  • Mark 6:25 - So the girl hurried back to the king and told him, “I want the head of John the Baptist, right now, on a tray!”
  • Mark 6:26 - Then the king deeply regretted what he had said; but because of the vows he had made in front of his guests, he couldn’t refuse her.
  • Mark 6:27 - So he immediately sent an executioner to the prison to cut off John’s head and bring it to him. The soldier beheaded John in the prison,
  • Mark 6:28 - brought his head on a tray, and gave it to the girl, who took it to her mother.
  • Mark 6:29 - When John’s disciples heard what had happened, they came to get his body and buried it in a tomb.
  • Matthew 17:12 - But I tell you, Elijah has already come, but he wasn’t recognized, and they chose to abuse him. And in the same way they will also make the Son of Man suffer.”

  • Luke 3:6 - And then all people will see the salvation sent from God.’”
  • Luke 3:7 - When the crowds came to John for baptism, he said, “You brood of snakes! Who warned you to flee the coming wrath?
  • Luke 3:8 - Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don’t just say to each other, ‘We’re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.’ That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones.
  • Luke 3:9 - Even now the ax of God’s judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire.”
  • Luke 3:10 - The crowds asked, “What should we do?”
  • Luke 3:11 - John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.”
  • Luke 3:12 - Even corrupt tax collectors came to be baptized and asked, “Teacher, what should we do?”
  • Luke 3:13 - He replied, “Collect no more taxes than the government requires.”
  • Luke 3:14 - “What should we do?” asked some soldiers. John replied, “Don’t extort money or make false accusations. And be content with your pay.”
  • Luke 3:15 - Everyone was expecting the Messiah to come soon, and they were eager to know whether John might be the Messiah.
  • Luke 3:16 - John answered their questions by saying, “I baptize you with water; but someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
  • Luke 3:17 - He is ready to separate the chaff from the wheat with his winnowing fork. Then he will clean up the threshing area, gathering the wheat into his barn but burning the chaff with never-ending fire.”
  • Luke 3:18 - John used many such warnings as he announced the Good News to the people.
  • Luke 3:19 - John also publicly criticized Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, for marrying Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for many other wrongs he had done.
  • Luke 3:20 - So Herod put John in prison, adding this sin to his many others.
  • Acts of the Apostles 19:3 - “Then what baptism did you experience?” he asked. And they replied, “The baptism of John.”
  • Acts of the Apostles 19:4 - Paul said, “John’s baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus.”
  • Luke 1:13 - But the angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Zechariah! God has heard your prayer. Your wife, Elizabeth, will give you a son, and you are to name him John.
  • Luke 1:14 - You will have great joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth,
  • Luke 1:15 - for he will be great in the eyes of the Lord. He must never touch wine or other alcoholic drinks. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even before his birth.

  • Luke 1:17 - He will be a man with the spirit and power of Elijah. He will prepare the people for the coming of the Lord. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and he will cause those who are rebellious to accept the wisdom of the godly.”
  • John 1:6 - God sent a man, John the Baptist,
  • John 1:7 - to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony.
  • John 1:8 - John himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light.
  • Matthew 16:14 - “Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.”
  • Matthew 11:11 - “I tell you the truth, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he is!
