  • Jonah 3:9 - Who knows? God might take pity on us. He might not be angry with us anymore. Then we won’t die.”
  • Jonah 3:10 - God saw what they did. He saw that they stopped doing what was evil. So he took pity on them. He didn’t destroy them as he had said he would.
  • Joel 1:14 - Announce a holy fast. Tell the people not to eat anything. Gather them together for a special service. Send for the elders and all who live in the land. Have them come to the house of the Lord your God. And pray to him.
  • 1 Samuel 7:6 - When the people had come together at Mizpah, they went to the well and got water. They poured it out in front of the Lord. On that day they didn’t eat any food. They admitted they had sinned. They said, “We’ve sinned against the Lord.” Samuel was serving as the leader of Israel at Mizpah.
  • Ezra 8:21 - By the canal that flows toward Ahava, I announced a fast. I told the people not to eat any food. In that way, we made ourselves humble in God’s sight. We prayed that he would give us and our children a safe journey. We asked him to keep safe everything we owned.
  • Judges 20:18 - The Israelites went up to Bethel. There they asked God, “Who should go up first and fight against the people of Benjamin?” The Lord answered, “The tribe of Judah will go first.”
  • Joel 2:12 - The Lord announces to his people, “Return to me with all your heart. There is still time. Do not eat any food. Weep and mourn.”
  • Joel 2:13 - Don’t just tear your clothes to show how sad you are. Let your hearts be broken. Return to the Lord your God. He is gracious. He is tender and kind. He is slow to get angry. He is full of love. He won’t bring his judgment. He won’t destroy you.
  • Joel 2:14 - Who knows? He might turn toward you and not bring his judgment. He might even give you his blessing. Then you can bring grain offerings and drink offerings to the Lord your God.
  • Joel 2:15 - Priests, blow the trumpets in Zion. Announce a holy fast. Tell the people not to eat anything. Gather them together for a special service.
  • Joel 2:16 - Bring them together. Set all of them apart to me. Bring together the elders. Gather the children and the babies who are still nursing. Let the groom leave his bedroom. Let the bride leave their marriage bed.
  • Joel 2:17 - Let the priests who serve the Lord weep. Let them cry between the temple porch and the altar. Let them say, “Lord, spare your people. Don’t let others make fun of them. Don’t let the nations laugh at them. Don’t let them tease your people and say, ‘Where is their God?’ ”
  • Joel 2:18 - Then the Lord was concerned for his land. He took pity on his people.
  • Ezra 9:4 - Then everyone who trembled with fear at God’s words gathered around me. That’s because the people who had returned from Babylon had not been faithful. So I was very upset. I just sat there until the time of the evening sacrifice.
  • Ezra 9:5 - Then I got up. I had been very sad for quite a while. My inner robe and my coat were torn. I fell down on my knees. I spread my hands out to the Lord my God.
  • Judges 20:23 - The Israelites went and wept in front of the Lord until evening. They asked the Lord, “Should we go up again to fight against the men of Benjamin? They are our fellow Israelites.” The Lord answered, “Go up and fight against them.”
