  • Genesis 34:7 - Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the field as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked and furious that their sister had been raped. Shechem had done a disgraceful thing against Jacob’s family, something that should never be done.
  • Genesis 34:8 - Hamor tried to speak with Jacob and his sons. “My son Shechem is truly in love with your daughter,” he said. “Please let him marry her.
  • Genesis 34:9 - In fact, let’s arrange other marriages, too. You give us your daughters for our sons, and we will give you our daughters for your sons.
  • Genesis 34:10 - And you may live among us; the land is open to you! Settle here and trade with us. And feel free to buy property in the area.”
  • Genesis 34:11 - Then Shechem himself spoke to Dinah’s father and brothers. “Please be kind to me, and let me marry her,” he begged. “I will give you whatever you ask.
  • Genesis 34:12 - No matter what dowry or gift you demand, I will gladly pay it—just give me the girl as my wife.”
  • Genesis 34:13 - But since Shechem had defiled their sister, Dinah, Jacob’s sons responded deceitfully to Shechem and his father, Hamor.
  • Genesis 34:14 - They said to them, “We couldn’t possibly allow this, because you’re not circumcised. It would be a disgrace for our sister to marry a man like you!
  • Genesis 34:15 - But here is a solution. If every man among you will be circumcised like we are,
  • Genesis 34:16 - then we will give you our daughters, and we’ll take your daughters for ourselves. We will live among you and become one people.
  • Genesis 34:17 - But if you don’t agree to be circumcised, we will take her and be on our way.”
  • Genesis 34:18 - Hamor and his son Shechem agreed to their proposal.
  • Genesis 34:19 - Shechem wasted no time in acting on this request, for he wanted Jacob’s daughter desperately. Shechem was a highly respected member of his family,
  • Genesis 34:20 - and he went with his father, Hamor, to present this proposal to the leaders at the town gate.
  • Genesis 34:21 - “These men are our friends,” they said. “Let’s invite them to live here among us and trade freely. Look, the land is large enough to hold them. We can take their daughters as wives and let them marry ours.
  • Genesis 34:22 - But they will consider staying here and becoming one people with us only if all of our men are circumcised, just as they are.
  • Genesis 34:23 - But if we do this, all their livestock and possessions will eventually be ours. Come, let’s agree to their terms and let them settle here among us.”
  • Genesis 34:24 - So all the men in the town council agreed with Hamor and Shechem, and every male in the town was circumcised.
  • Genesis 34:25 - But three days later, when their wounds were still sore, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, who were Dinah’s full brothers, took their swords and entered the town without opposition. Then they slaughtered every male there,
  • Genesis 34:26 - including Hamor and his son Shechem. They killed them with their swords, then took Dinah from Shechem’s house and returned to their camp.
  • Genesis 34:27 - Meanwhile, the rest of Jacob’s sons arrived. Finding the men slaughtered, they plundered the town because their sister had been defiled there.
  • Genesis 34:28 - They seized all the flocks and herds and donkeys—everything they could lay their hands on, both inside the town and outside in the fields.
  • Genesis 34:29 - They looted all their wealth and plundered their houses. They also took all their little children and wives and led them away as captives.

  • Numbers 1:16 - These are the chosen leaders of the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.”
  • Numbers 1:17 - So Moses and Aaron called together these chosen leaders,
  • Numbers 1:18 - and they assembled the whole community of Israel on that very day. All the people were registered according to their ancestry by their clans and families. The men of Israel who were twenty years old or older were listed one by one,
  • Numbers 1:19 - just as the Lord had commanded Moses. So Moses recorded their names in the wilderness of Sinai.

  • Numbers 1:44 - These were the men registered by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, all listed according to their ancestral descent.
  • Numbers 1:45 - They were registered by families—all the men of Israel who were twenty years old or older and able to go to war.
  • Numbers 1:46 - The total number was 603,550.
  • Numbers 1:47 - But this total did not include the Levites.
  • Numbers 1:48 - For the Lord had said to Moses,
  • Numbers 1:49 - “Do not include the tribe of Levi in the registration; do not count them with the rest of the Israelites.
  • Numbers 1:50 - Put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle of the Covenant, along with all its furnishings and equipment. They must carry the Tabernacle and all its furnishings as you travel, and they must take care of it and camp around it.
  • Numbers 1:51 - Whenever it is time for the Tabernacle to move, the Levites will take it down. And when it is time to stop, they will set it up again. But any unauthorized person who goes too near the Tabernacle must be put to death.
  • Numbers 1:52 - Each tribe of Israel will camp in a designated area with its own family banner.
  • Numbers 1:53 - But the Levites will camp around the Tabernacle of the Covenant to protect the community of Israel from the Lord’s anger. The Levites are responsible to stand guard around the Tabernacle.”
  • Numbers 1:54 - So the Israelites did everything just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

  • Numbers 10:8 - Only the priests, Aaron’s descendants, are allowed to blow the trumpets. This is a permanent law for you, to be observed from generation to generation.
  • Numbers 10:9 - “When you arrive in your own land and go to war against your enemies who attack you, sound the alarm with the trumpets. Then the Lord your God will remember you and rescue you from your enemies.
  • Numbers 10:10 - Blow the trumpets in times of gladness, too, sounding them at your annual festivals and at the beginning of each month. And blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and peace offerings. The trumpets will remind your God of his covenant with you. I am the Lord your God.”
  • Numbers 10:11 - In the second year after Israel’s departure from Egypt—on the twentieth day of the second month —the cloud lifted from the Tabernacle of the Covenant.
  • Numbers 10:12 - So the Israelites set out from the wilderness of Sinai and traveled on from place to place until the cloud stopped in the wilderness of Paran.

  • Numbers 10:19 - They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Simeon, led by Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai,

  • Numbers 10:21 - Next came the Kohathite division of the Levites, carrying the sacred objects from the Tabernacle. Before they arrived at the next camp, the Tabernacle would already be set up at its new location.

  • Numbers 26:58 - The Libnites, the Hebronites, the Mahlites, the Mushites, and the Korahites were all subclans of the Levites. Now Kohath was the ancestor of Amram,
  • Numbers 26:59 - and Amram’s wife was named Jochebed. She also was a descendant of Levi, born among the Levites in the land of Egypt. Amram and Jochebed became the parents of Aaron, Moses, and their sister, Miriam.
  • Numbers 26:60 - To Aaron were born Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
  • Numbers 26:61 - But Nadab and Abihu died when they burned before the Lord the wrong kind of fire, different than he had commanded.
  • Numbers 26:62 - The men from the Levite clans who were one month old or older numbered 23,000. But the Levites were not included in the registration of the rest of the people of Israel because they were not given an allotment of land when it was divided among the Israelites.
  • Numbers 26:63 - So these are the results of the registration of the people of Israel as conducted by Moses and Eleazar the priest on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho.
  • Numbers 26:64 - Not one person on this list had been among those listed in the previous registration taken by Moses and Aaron in the wilderness of Sinai.
  • Numbers 26:65 - For the Lord had said of them, “They will all die in the wilderness.” Not one of them survived except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

  • Genesis 25:20 - When Isaac was forty years old, he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-aram and the sister of Laban the Aramean.
  • Genesis 34:1 - One day Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah, went to visit some of the young women who lived in the area.
  • Genesis 34:2 - But when the local prince, Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, saw Dinah, he seized her and raped her.
  • Genesis 34:3 - But then he fell in love with her, and he tried to win her affection with tender words.
  • Genesis 34:4 - He said to his father, Hamor, “Get me this young girl. I want to marry her.”
  • Genesis 34:5 - Soon Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled his daughter, Dinah. But since his sons were out in the fields herding his livestock, he said nothing until they returned.
  • Genesis 34:6 - Hamor, Shechem’s father, came to discuss the matter with Jacob.
  • Genesis 34:7 - Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the field as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked and furious that their sister had been raped. Shechem had done a disgraceful thing against Jacob’s family, something that should never be done.
  • Genesis 34:8 - Hamor tried to speak with Jacob and his sons. “My son Shechem is truly in love with your daughter,” he said. “Please let him marry her.
  • Genesis 34:9 - In fact, let’s arrange other marriages, too. You give us your daughters for our sons, and we will give you our daughters for your sons.
  • Genesis 34:10 - And you may live among us; the land is open to you! Settle here and trade with us. And feel free to buy property in the area.”
  • Genesis 34:11 - Then Shechem himself spoke to Dinah’s father and brothers. “Please be kind to me, and let me marry her,” he begged. “I will give you whatever you ask.
  • Genesis 34:12 - No matter what dowry or gift you demand, I will gladly pay it—just give me the girl as my wife.”
  • Genesis 34:13 - But since Shechem had defiled their sister, Dinah, Jacob’s sons responded deceitfully to Shechem and his father, Hamor.
  • Genesis 34:14 - They said to them, “We couldn’t possibly allow this, because you’re not circumcised. It would be a disgrace for our sister to marry a man like you!
  • Genesis 34:15 - But here is a solution. If every man among you will be circumcised like we are,
  • Genesis 34:16 - then we will give you our daughters, and we’ll take your daughters for ourselves. We will live among you and become one people.
  • Genesis 34:17 - But if you don’t agree to be circumcised, we will take her and be on our way.”
  • Genesis 34:18 - Hamor and his son Shechem agreed to their proposal.
  • Genesis 34:19 - Shechem wasted no time in acting on this request, for he wanted Jacob’s daughter desperately. Shechem was a highly respected member of his family,
  • Genesis 34:20 - and he went with his father, Hamor, to present this proposal to the leaders at the town gate.
  • Genesis 34:21 - “These men are our friends,” they said. “Let’s invite them to live here among us and trade freely. Look, the land is large enough to hold them. We can take their daughters as wives and let them marry ours.
  • Genesis 34:22 - But they will consider staying here and becoming one people with us only if all of our men are circumcised, just as they are.
  • Genesis 34:23 - But if we do this, all their livestock and possessions will eventually be ours. Come, let’s agree to their terms and let them settle here among us.”
  • Genesis 34:24 - So all the men in the town council agreed with Hamor and Shechem, and every male in the town was circumcised.
  • Genesis 34:25 - But three days later, when their wounds were still sore, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, who were Dinah’s full brothers, took their swords and entered the town without opposition. Then they slaughtered every male there,
  • Genesis 34:26 - including Hamor and his son Shechem. They killed them with their swords, then took Dinah from Shechem’s house and returned to their camp.
  • Genesis 34:27 - Meanwhile, the rest of Jacob’s sons arrived. Finding the men slaughtered, they plundered the town because their sister had been defiled there.
  • Genesis 34:28 - They seized all the flocks and herds and donkeys—everything they could lay their hands on, both inside the town and outside in the fields.
  • Genesis 34:29 - They looted all their wealth and plundered their houses. They also took all their little children and wives and led them away as captives.
  • Genesis 34:30 - Afterward Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have ruined me! You’ve made me stink among all the people of this land—among all the Canaanites and Perizzites. We are so few that they will join forces and crush us. I will be ruined, and my entire household will be wiped out!”
  • Genesis 34:31 - “But why should we let him treat our sister like a prostitute?” they retorted angrily.
  • 1 Chronicles 2:1 - The sons of Israel were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun,
  • Genesis 49:3 - “Reuben, you are my firstborn, my strength, the child of my vigorous youth. You are first in rank and first in power.
  • Genesis 49:4 - But you are as unruly as a flood, and you will be first no longer. For you went to bed with my wife; you defiled my marriage couch.
  • Genesis 49:5 - “Simeon and Levi are two of a kind; their weapons are instruments of violence.
  • Genesis 49:6 - May I never join in their meetings; may I never be a party to their plans. For in their anger they murdered men, and they crippled oxen just for sport.
  • Genesis 49:7 - A curse on their anger, for it is fierce; a curse on their wrath, for it is cruel. I will scatter them among the descendants of Jacob; I will disperse them throughout Israel.
  • Genesis 49:8 - “Judah, your brothers will praise you. You will grasp your enemies by the neck. All your relatives will bow before you.
  • Genesis 49:9 - Judah, my son, is a young lion that has finished eating its prey. Like a lion he crouches and lies down; like a lioness—who dares to rouse him?
  • Genesis 49:10 - The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from his descendants, until the coming of the one to whom it belongs, the one whom all nations will honor.
  • Genesis 49:11 - He ties his foal to a grapevine, the colt of his donkey to a choice vine. He washes his clothes in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes.
  • Genesis 49:12 - His eyes are darker than wine, and his teeth are whiter than milk.
  • Genesis 49:13 - “Zebulun will settle by the seashore and will be a harbor for ships; his borders will extend to Sidon.
  • Genesis 49:14 - “Issachar is a sturdy donkey, resting between two saddlepacks.
  • Genesis 49:15 - When he sees how good the countryside is and how pleasant the land, he will bend his shoulder to the load and submit himself to hard labor.
  • Numbers 1:1 - A year after Israel’s departure from Egypt, the Lord spoke to Moses in the Tabernacle in the wilderness of Sinai. On the first day of the second month of that year he said,
  • Numbers 1:2 - “From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their clans and families. List all the men
  • Numbers 1:3 - twenty years old or older who are able to go to war. You and Aaron must register the troops,
  • Numbers 1:4 - and you will be assisted by one family leader from each tribe.
  • Numbers 1:5 - “These are the tribes and the names of the leaders who will assist you: Tribe Leader Reuben Elizur son of Shedeur
  • Numbers 1:6 - Simeon Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai
  • Numbers 1:7 - Judah Nahshon son of Amminadab
  • Numbers 1:8 - Issachar Nethanel son of Zuar
  • Numbers 1:9 - Zebulun Eliab son of Helon
  • Numbers 1:10 - Ephraim son of Joseph Elishama son of Ammihud Manasseh son of Joseph Gamaliel son of Pedahzur
  • Numbers 1:11 - Benjamin Abidan son of Gideoni
  • Numbers 1:12 - Dan Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai
  • Numbers 1:13 - Asher Pagiel son of Ocran
  • Numbers 1:14 - Gad Eliasaph son of Deuel
  • Numbers 1:15 - Naphtali Ahira son of Enan
  • Numbers 1:16 - These are the chosen leaders of the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.”
  • Numbers 1:17 - So Moses and Aaron called together these chosen leaders,
  • Numbers 1:18 - and they assembled the whole community of Israel on that very day. All the people were registered according to their ancestry by their clans and families. The men of Israel who were twenty years old or older were listed one by one,
  • Numbers 1:19 - just as the Lord had commanded Moses. So Moses recorded their names in the wilderness of Sinai.
  • Numbers 1:20 - This is the number of men twenty years old or older who were able to go to war, as their names were listed in the records of their clans and families : Tribe Number Reuben (Jacob’s oldest son) 46,500
  • Numbers 1:22 - Simeon 59,300
  • Numbers 1:24 - Gad 45,650
  • Numbers 1:26 - Judah 74,600
  • Numbers 1:28 - Issachar 54,400
  • Numbers 1:30 - Zebulun 57,400
  • Numbers 1:32 - Ephraim son of Joseph 40,500
  • Numbers 1:34 - Manasseh son of Joseph 32,200
  • Numbers 1:36 - Benjamin 35,400
  • Numbers 1:38 - Dan 62,700
  • Numbers 1:40 - Asher 41,500
  • Numbers 1:42 - Naphtali 53,400
  • Numbers 1:44 - These were the men registered by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, all listed according to their ancestral descent.
  • Numbers 1:45 - They were registered by families—all the men of Israel who were twenty years old or older and able to go to war.
  • Numbers 1:46 - The total number was 603,550.
  • Numbers 1:47 - But this total did not include the Levites.
  • Numbers 1:48 - For the Lord had said to Moses,
  • Numbers 1:49 - “Do not include the tribe of Levi in the registration; do not count them with the rest of the Israelites.
  • Numbers 1:50 - Put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle of the Covenant, along with all its furnishings and equipment. They must carry the Tabernacle and all its furnishings as you travel, and they must take care of it and camp around it.
  • Numbers 1:51 - Whenever it is time for the Tabernacle to move, the Levites will take it down. And when it is time to stop, they will set it up again. But any unauthorized person who goes too near the Tabernacle must be put to death.
  • Numbers 1:52 - Each tribe of Israel will camp in a designated area with its own family banner.
  • Numbers 1:53 - But the Levites will camp around the Tabernacle of the Covenant to protect the community of Israel from the Lord’s anger. The Levites are responsible to stand guard around the Tabernacle.”
  • Numbers 1:54 - So the Israelites did everything just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
  • Genesis 35:23 - The sons of Leah were Reuben (Jacob’s oldest son), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.
  • Numbers 10:1 - Now the Lord said to Moses,
  • Numbers 10:2 - “Make two trumpets of hammered silver for calling the community to assemble and for signaling the breaking of camp.
  • Numbers 10:3 - When both trumpets are blown, everyone must gather before you at the entrance of the Tabernacle.
  • Numbers 10:4 - But if only one trumpet is blown, then only the leaders—the heads of the clans of Israel—must present themselves to you.
  • Numbers 10:5 - “When you sound the signal to move on, the tribes camped on the east side of the Tabernacle must break camp and move forward.
  • Numbers 10:6 - When you sound the signal a second time, the tribes camped on the south will follow. You must sound short blasts as the signal for moving on.
  • Numbers 10:7 - But when you call the people to an assembly, blow the trumpets with a different signal.
  • Numbers 10:8 - Only the priests, Aaron’s descendants, are allowed to blow the trumpets. This is a permanent law for you, to be observed from generation to generation.
  • Numbers 10:9 - “When you arrive in your own land and go to war against your enemies who attack you, sound the alarm with the trumpets. Then the Lord your God will remember you and rescue you from your enemies.
  • Numbers 10:10 - Blow the trumpets in times of gladness, too, sounding them at your annual festivals and at the beginning of each month. And blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and peace offerings. The trumpets will remind your God of his covenant with you. I am the Lord your God.”
  • Numbers 10:11 - In the second year after Israel’s departure from Egypt—on the twentieth day of the second month —the cloud lifted from the Tabernacle of the Covenant.
  • Numbers 10:12 - So the Israelites set out from the wilderness of Sinai and traveled on from place to place until the cloud stopped in the wilderness of Paran.
  • Numbers 10:13 - When the people set out for the first time, following the instructions the Lord had given through Moses,
  • Numbers 10:14 - Judah’s troops led the way. They marched behind their banner, and their leader was Nahshon son of Amminadab.
  • Numbers 10:15 - They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Issachar, led by Nethanel son of Zuar,
  • Numbers 10:16 - and the troops of the tribe of Zebulun, led by Eliab son of Helon.
  • Numbers 10:17 - Then the Tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonite and Merarite divisions of the Levites were next in the line of march, carrying the Tabernacle with them.
  • Numbers 10:18 - Reuben’s troops went next, marching behind their banner. Their leader was Elizur son of Shedeur.
  • Numbers 10:19 - They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Simeon, led by Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai,
  • Numbers 10:20 - and the troops of the tribe of Gad, led by Eliasaph son of Deuel.
  • Numbers 10:21 - Next came the Kohathite division of the Levites, carrying the sacred objects from the Tabernacle. Before they arrived at the next camp, the Tabernacle would already be set up at its new location.
  • Numbers 10:22 - Ephraim’s troops went next, marching behind their banner. Their leader was Elishama son of Ammihud.
  • Numbers 10:23 - They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Manasseh, led by Gamaliel son of Pedahzur,
  • Numbers 10:24 - and the troops of the tribe of Benjamin, led by Abidan son of Gideoni.
  • Numbers 10:25 - Dan’s troops went last, marching behind their banner and serving as the rear guard for all the tribal camps. Their leader was Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.
  • Numbers 10:26 - They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Asher, led by Pagiel son of Ocran,
  • Numbers 10:27 - and the troops of the tribe of Naphtali, led by Ahira son of Enan.
  • Numbers 10:28 - This was the order in which the Israelites marched, division by division.
  • Numbers 10:29 - One day Moses said to his brother-in-law, Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, “We are on our way to the place the Lord promised us, for he said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised wonderful blessings for Israel!”
  • Numbers 10:30 - But Hobab replied, “No, I will not go. I must return to my own land and family.”
  • Numbers 10:31 - “Please don’t leave us,” Moses pleaded. “You know the places in the wilderness where we should camp. Come, be our guide.
  • Numbers 10:32 - If you do, we’ll share with you all the blessings the Lord gives us.”
  • Numbers 10:33 - They marched for three days after leaving the mountain of the Lord, with the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant moving ahead of them to show them where to stop and rest.
  • Numbers 10:34 - As they moved on each day, the cloud of the Lord hovered over them.
  • Numbers 10:35 - And whenever the Ark set out, Moses would shout, “Arise, O Lord, and let your enemies be scattered! Let them flee before you!”
  • Numbers 10:36 - And when the Ark was set down, he would say, “Return, O Lord, to the countless thousands of Israel!”
  • Genesis 29:32 - So Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said, “The Lord has noticed my misery, and now my husband will love me.”
  • Genesis 29:33 - She soon became pregnant again and gave birth to another son. She named him Simeon, for she said, “The Lord heard that I was unloved and has given me another son.”
  • Genesis 29:34 - Then she became pregnant a third time and gave birth to another son. He was named Levi, for she said, “Surely this time my husband will feel affection for me, since I have given him three sons!”
  • Genesis 29:35 - Once again Leah became pregnant and gave birth to another son. She named him Judah, for she said, “Now I will praise the Lord!” And then she stopped having children.
  • Genesis 30:17 - And God answered Leah’s prayers. She became pregnant again and gave birth to a fifth son for Jacob.
  • Genesis 30:18 - She named him Issachar, for she said, “God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband as a wife.”
  • Genesis 30:19 - Then Leah became pregnant again and gave birth to a sixth son for Jacob.
  • Genesis 30:20 - She named him Zebulun, for she said, “God has given me a good reward. Now my husband will treat me with respect, for I have given him six sons.”
  • Genesis 30:21 - Later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.
