- Genesis 34:7 - Now when Jacob’s sons heard of it they came in from the field; they were deeply grieved, and they were very angry, for Shechem had done a disgraceful thing to Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, for such a thing is not to be done.
- Genesis 34:8 - But Hamor conferred with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem [deeply] longs for your daughter [and sister]. Please give her to him as his wife.
- Genesis 34:9 - And [beyond that] intermarry with us; give your daughters to us [as wives] and take our daughters for yourselves.
- Genesis 34:10 - In this way you shall live with us; the country will be open to you; live and do business in it and acquire property and possessions in it.”
- Genesis 34:11 - Shechem also said to Dinah’s father and to her brothers, “Let me find favor in your sight, and I will give you whatever you ask of me.
- Genesis 34:12 - Demand of me a very large bridal payment and gift [as compensation for giving up your daughter and sister], and I will give you whatever you tell me; only give me the girl to be my wife.”
- Genesis 34:13 - Jacob’s sons answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, because Shechem had defiled and disgraced their sister Dinah.
- Genesis 34:14 - They said to them, “We cannot do this thing and give our sister [in marriage] to one who is not circumcised, because that would be a disgrace to us.
- Genesis 34:15 - But we will consent to you only on this condition: if you will become like us, in that every male among you consents to be circumcised,
- Genesis 34:16 - then we will give our daughters to you [in marriage], and we will take your daughters for ourselves, and we will live with you and become one people.
- Genesis 34:17 - But if you do not listen to us and refuse to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter [Dinah] and go.”
- Genesis 34:18 - Their words seemed reasonable to Hamor and his son Shechem,
- Genesis 34:19 - and the young man did not hesitate to do the [required] thing, for he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter. Now he was more respected and honored than all [others] in the household of his father.
- Genesis 34:20 - Then Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their [walled] city [where the leading men would meet] and spoke with the men of the city, saying,
- Genesis 34:21 - “These men are peaceful and friendly with us; so let them live in the land and do business in it, for the land is large enough [for us and] for them; let us take their daughters for wives and let us give them our daughters [in marriage].
- Genesis 34:22 - But only on this condition will the men consent to our request that they live among us and become one people: that every male among us become circumcised just as they are circumcised.
- Genesis 34:23 - Will not their cattle and their possessions and all their animals be ours [if we do this]? Let us consent [to do as they ask], and they will live here with us.”
- Genesis 34:24 - And every [Canaanite] man who went out of the city gate listened and considered what Hamor and Shechem said; and every male who was a resident of that city was circumcised.
- Genesis 34:25 - Now on the third day [after the circumcision], when all the men were [terribly] sore and in pain, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s [full] brothers, took their swords, boldly entered the city [without anyone suspecting them of evil intent], and they killed every male.
- Genesis 34:26 - They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house [where she was staying], and left.
- Genesis 34:27 - Then Jacob’s [other] sons came upon those who were killed and looted the town, because their sister had been defiled and disgraced.
- Genesis 34:28 - They took the Canaanites’ flocks and their herds and their donkeys, and whatever was in the city and in the field;

- Numbers 1:10 - from the sons (descendants) of Joseph: from [the tribe of] Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; from [the tribe of] Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur;
- Numbers 1:11 - from [the tribe of] Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni;
- Numbers 1:12 - from [the tribe of] Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai;
- Numbers 1:13 - from [the tribe of] Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran;
- Numbers 1:14 - from [the tribe of] Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel;
- Numbers 1:15 - from [the tribe of] Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.
- Numbers 1:16 - These men were the ones called from the congregation, the leaders of their fathers’ (ancestors’) tribes; they were the heads of thousands [the highest ranking officers] in Israel.”
- Numbers 1:17 - So Moses and Aaron took these men who were designated by name,
- Numbers 1:18 - and assembled all the congregation on the first day of the second month, and they registered by ancestry in their families (clans), by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names from twenty years old and upward, head by head,
- Numbers 1:19 - just as the Lord had commanded Moses. So he numbered them in the Wilderness of Sinai.
- Numbers 1:20 - The sons of Reuben, Israel’s (Jacob’s) firstborn, their generations, by their families (clans), by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
- Numbers 1:21 - those of the tribe of Reuben numbered 46,500.
- Numbers 1:22 - Of the sons of Simeon, their descendants, by their families (clans), by their fathers’ households, their numbered men according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
- Numbers 1:23 - those of the tribe of Simeon numbered 59,300.
- Numbers 1:24 - Of the sons of Gad, their descendants, by their families (clans), by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
- Numbers 1:25 - those of the tribe of Gad numbered 45,650.
- Numbers 1:26 - Of the sons of Judah, their descendants, by their families (clans), by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
- Numbers 1:27 - those of the tribe of Judah numbered 74,600.
- Numbers 1:28 - Of the sons of Issachar, their descendants, by their families (clans), by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
- Numbers 1:29 - those of the tribe of Issachar numbered 54,400.
- Numbers 1:30 - Of the sons of Zebulun, their descendants, by their families (clans), by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
- Numbers 1:31 - those of the tribe of Zebulun numbered 57,400.
- Numbers 1:32 - Of the sons of Joseph: the sons (descendants) of Ephraim, their descendants, by their families (clans), by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
- Numbers 1:33 - those of the tribe of Ephraim numbered 40,500.
- Numbers 1:34 - Of the sons of Manasseh, their descendants, by their families (clans), by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
- Numbers 1:35 - those of the tribe of Manasseh numbered 32,200.
- Numbers 1:36 - Of the sons of Benjamin, their descendants, by their families (clans), by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
- Numbers 1:37 - those of the tribe of Benjamin numbered 35,400.
- Numbers 1:38 - Of the sons of Dan, their descendants, by their families (clans), by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
- Numbers 1:39 - those of the tribe of Dan numbered 62,700.
- Numbers 1:40 - Of the sons of Asher, their descendants, by their families (clans), by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
- Numbers 1:41 - those of the tribe of Asher numbered 41,500.
- Numbers 1:42 - Of the sons of Naphtali, their descendants, by their families (clans), by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war:
- Numbers 1:43 - those of the tribe of Naphtali numbered 53,400.
- Numbers 1:44 - These were the ones who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, with the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each representing his fathers’ household.
- Numbers 1:45 - So all those numbered of the sons of Israel, by their fathers’ households, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war in Israel,
- Numbers 1:46 - all who were numbered were 603,550.
- Numbers 1:47 - The Levites, however, were not numbered among them by their fathers’ tribe.
- Numbers 1:48 - For the Lord had said to Moses,
- Numbers 1:49 - “Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, nor shall you take their census among the sons of Israel [since they are unavailable to go to war].
- Numbers 1:50 - But appoint the Levites over the tabernacle (sanctuary) of the Testimony, and over all its furnishings and all things that belong to it. They shall carry the tabernacle [when traveling] and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it and camp around it.
- Numbers 1:51 - When the tabernacle is to go forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to [be set up for] camp, the Levites shall set it up. But the layman (non-Levite) who approaches the tabernacle shall be put to death.
- Numbers 1:52 - The Israelites shall camp according to their armies, every man by his own camp and every man by his own [tribal] standard (banner).
- Numbers 1:53 - But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony, so that there will be no wrath against the congregation of the Israelites. The Levites shall be in charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony.”
- Numbers 1:54 - Thus the sons of Israel did these things; according to all that the Lord had commanded Moses, so they did.
- Genesis 35:23 - The sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, then Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun;
- Numbers 10:1 - The Lord spoke further to Moses, saying,
- Numbers 10:2 - “Make two trumpets of silver; you shall make them of hammered work. You shall use them to summon the congregation and to have the camps move out.
- Numbers 10:3 - When both are blown, all the congregation [that is, all adult males] shall gather before you at the doorway of the Tent of Meeting (tabernacle).
- Numbers 10:4 - However, if a single trumpet is blown, then the leaders, heads of the tribes of Israel, shall gather themselves to you.
- Numbers 10:5 - When you blow an alarm, the camps on the east side [of the tabernacle] shall set out.
- Numbers 10:6 - When you blow an alarm the second time, then the camps on the south side [of the tabernacle] shall set out. They shall blow an alarm whenever they are to move out [on their journeys].
- Numbers 10:7 - When the assembly is to be gathered, you shall blow [the trumpets in short, sharp tones], but without sounding an alarm.
- Numbers 10:8 - The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets; and the trumpets shall be for you a perpetual statute throughout your generations.
- Numbers 10:9 - When you go to war in your land against the enemy that attacks you, then sound an alarm with the trumpets, so that you may be remembered before the Lord your God, and you shall be saved from your enemies.
- Numbers 10:10 - Also in the day of rejoicing, and in your appointed feasts, and at the beginnings of your months, you shall sound the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifice of your peace offerings; and they shall be as a reminder of you before your God. I am the Lord your God.”
- Numbers 10:11 - On the twentieth day of the second month in the second year [since leaving Egypt], the cloud [of the Lord’s presence] was lifted from over the tabernacle of the Testimony,
- Numbers 10:12 - and the Israelites set out on their journey from the Wilderness of Sinai, and the cloud [of the Lord’s guiding presence] settled down in the Wilderness of Paran.
- Numbers 10:13 - So they moved out for the first time in accordance with the command of the Lord through Moses.
- Numbers 10:14 - The standard of the camp of the sons of Judah, according to their armies, moved out first, Nahshon the son of Amminadab was [commander] over its army,
- Numbers 10:15 - and Nethanel the son of Zuar was [commander] over the tribal army of the sons of Issachar;
- Numbers 10:16 - and Eliab the son of Helon was [commander] over the tribal army of the sons of Zebulun.
- Numbers 10:17 - Then the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who were carrying the tabernacle, moved out.
- Numbers 10:18 - Next the standard of the camp of the sons of Reuben, according to their armies, moved out, with Elizur the son of Shedeur [commander] over its army,
- Numbers 10:19 - and Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai was [commander] over the tribal army of the sons of Simeon,
- Numbers 10:20 - and Eliasaph the son of Deuel was [commander] over the tribal army of the sons of Gad.
- Numbers 10:21 - Then the Kohathites moved out, carrying the holy things, and the tabernacle was set up before they arrived.
- Numbers 10:22 - Next the standard of the camp of the sons of Ephraim moved out, according to their armies, with Elishama the son of Ammihud [commander] over its army,
- Numbers 10:23 - and Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur was [commander] over the tribal army of the sons of Manasseh,
- Numbers 10:24 - and Abidan the son of Gideoni was [commander] over the tribal army of the sons of Benjamin.
- Numbers 10:25 - Then the standard of the camp of the sons of Dan, according to their armies, which formed the rear guard for all the camps, moved out, with Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai [commander] over its army,
- Numbers 10:26 - and Pagiel the son of Ochran was [commander] over the tribal army of the sons of Asher,
- Numbers 10:27 - and Ahira the son of Enan was [commander] over the tribal army of the sons of Naphtali.
- Numbers 10:28 - This was the order of march of the sons of Israel by their armies as they moved out.
- Numbers 10:29 - Then Moses said to Hobab the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, “We are going to the place of which the Lord said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us, and we will be good to you, for the Lord has promised good [things] concerning Israel.”
- Numbers 10:30 - But Hobab [Moses’ brother-in-law] said to him, “I will not go; I will return to my own land and to my family.”
- Numbers 10:31 - Then Moses said, “ Please do not leave us, for you know how we are to camp in the wilderness, and you will serve as eyes for us [as we make our trek through the desert].
- Numbers 10:32 - So if you will go with us, it shall be that whatever good the Lord does for us, we will do the same for you.”
- Numbers 10:33 - So they set out from the mountain of the Lord (Sinai) three days’ journey; and the ark of the covenant of the Lord went in front of them during the three days’ journey to seek out a resting place for them.
- Numbers 10:34 - The cloud of the Lord was over them by day when they set out from the camp.
- Numbers 10:35 - Whenever the ark set out, Moses said, “Rise up, O Lord! Let Your enemies be scattered; And let those who hate You flee before You.”
- Numbers 10:36 - And when the ark rested, Moses said, “Return, O Lord, To the myriad (many) thousands of Israel.”
- Genesis 29:32 - Leah conceived and gave birth to a son and named him Reuben (See, a son!), for she said, “Because the Lord has seen my humiliation and suffering; now my husband will love me [since I have given him a son].”
- Genesis 29:33 - Then she conceived again and gave birth to a son and said, “Because the Lord heard that I am unloved, He has given me this son also.” So she named him Simeon (God hears).
- Genesis 29:34 - She conceived again and gave birth to a son and said, “Now this time my husband will become attached to me [as a companion], for I have given him three sons.” Therefore he was named Levi.
- Genesis 29:35 - Again she conceived and gave birth to a [fourth] son, and she said, “Now I will praise the Lord.” So she named him Judah; then [for a time] she stopped bearing [children].
- Genesis 30:17 - God listened and answered [the prayer of] Leah, and she conceived and gave birth to a fifth son for Jacob.
- Genesis 30:18 - Then Leah said, “God has given me my reward because I have given my maid to my husband.” So she named him Issachar.
- Genesis 30:19 - Leah conceived again and gave birth to a sixth son for Jacob.
- Genesis 30:20 - Then Leah said, “God has endowed me with a good [marriage] gift [for my husband]; now he will live with me [regarding me with honor as his wife], because I have given birth to six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.
- Genesis 30:21 - Afterward she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.
