  • Numbers 1:51 - Whenever it is time for the Tabernacle to move, the Levites will take it down. And when it is time to stop, they will set it up again. But any unauthorized person who goes too near the Tabernacle must be put to death.
  • Numbers 1:52 - Each tribe of Israel will camp in a designated area with its own family banner.
  • Numbers 1:53 - But the Levites will camp around the Tabernacle of the Covenant to protect the community of Israel from the Lord’s anger. The Levites are responsible to stand guard around the Tabernacle.”
  • Numbers 1:54 - So the Israelites did everything just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
  • Genesis 35:16 - Leaving Bethel, Jacob and his clan moved on toward Ephrath. But Rachel went into labor while they were still some distance away. Her labor pains were intense.
  • Genesis 35:17 - After a very hard delivery, the midwife finally exclaimed, “Don’t be afraid—you have another son!”
  • Genesis 35:18 - Rachel was about to die, but with her last breath she named the baby Ben-oni (which means “son of my sorrow”). The baby’s father, however, called him Benjamin (which means “son of my right hand”).

  • Genesis 42:38 - But Jacob replied, “My son will not go down with you. His brother Joseph is dead, and he is all I have left. If anything should happen to him on your journey, you would send this grieving, white-haired man to his grave. ”
  • Numbers 26:1 - After the plague had ended, the Lord said to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest,
  • Numbers 26:2 - “From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their families. List all the men twenty years old or older who are able to go to war.”
  • Numbers 26:3 - So there on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest issued these instructions to the leaders of Israel:
  • Numbers 26:4 - “List all the men of Israel twenty years old and older, just as the Lord commanded Moses.” This is the record of all the descendants of Israel who came out of Egypt.
  • Numbers 26:5 - These were the clans descended from the sons of Reuben, Jacob’s oldest son: The Hanochite clan, named after their ancestor Hanoch. The Palluite clan, named after their ancestor Pallu.

  • Numbers 26:10 - But the earth opened up its mouth and swallowed them with Korah, and fire devoured 250 of their followers. This served as a warning to the entire nation of Israel.

  • Numbers 26:53 - “Divide the land among the tribes, and distribute the grants of land in proportion to the tribes’ populations, as indicated by the number of names on the list.
  • Numbers 26:54 - Give the larger tribes more land and the smaller tribes less land, each group receiving a grant in proportion to the size of its population.
  • Numbers 26:55 - But you must assign the land by lot, and give land to each ancestral tribe according to the number of names on the list.

  • Numbers 26:57 - This is the record of the Levites who were counted according to their clans: The Gershonite clan, named after their ancestor Gershon. The Kohathite clan, named after their ancestor Kohath. The Merarite clan, named after their ancestor Merari.
  • Numbers 26:58 - The Libnites, the Hebronites, the Mahlites, the Mushites, and the Korahites were all subclans of the Levites. Now Kohath was the ancestor of Amram,
  • Numbers 26:59 - and Amram’s wife was named Jochebed. She also was a descendant of Levi, born among the Levites in the land of Egypt. Amram and Jochebed became the parents of Aaron, Moses, and their sister, Miriam.
  • Numbers 26:60 - To Aaron were born Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
  • Numbers 26:61 - But Nadab and Abihu died when they burned before the Lord the wrong kind of fire, different than he had commanded.
  • Numbers 26:62 - The men from the Levite clans who were one month old or older numbered 23,000. But the Levites were not included in the registration of the rest of the people of Israel because they were not given an allotment of land when it was divided among the Israelites.
  • Numbers 26:63 - So these are the results of the registration of the people of Israel as conducted by Moses and Eleazar the priest on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho.
  • Numbers 26:64 - Not one person on this list had been among those listed in the previous registration taken by Moses and Aaron in the wilderness of Sinai.

  • Numbers 10:8 - Only the priests, Aaron’s descendants, are allowed to blow the trumpets. This is a permanent law for you, to be observed from generation to generation.
  • Numbers 10:9 - “When you arrive in your own land and go to war against your enemies who attack you, sound the alarm with the trumpets. Then the Lord your God will remember you and rescue you from your enemies.
  • Numbers 10:10 - Blow the trumpets in times of gladness, too, sounding them at your annual festivals and at the beginning of each month. And blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and peace offerings. The trumpets will remind your God of his covenant with you. I am the Lord your God.”
  • Numbers 10:11 - In the second year after Israel’s departure from Egypt—on the twentieth day of the second month —the cloud lifted from the Tabernacle of the Covenant.
  • Numbers 10:12 - So the Israelites set out from the wilderness of Sinai and traveled on from place to place until the cloud stopped in the wilderness of Paran.
  • Numbers 10:13 - When the people set out for the first time, following the instructions the Lord had given through Moses,
  • Numbers 10:14 - Judah’s troops led the way. They marched behind their banner, and their leader was Nahshon son of Amminadab.

  • 1 Chronicles 2:3 - Judah had three sons from Bathshua, a Canaanite woman. Their names were Er, Onan, and Shelah. But the Lord saw that the oldest son, Er, was a wicked man, so he killed him.
  • 1 Chronicles 2:4 - Later Judah had twin sons from Tamar, his widowed daughter-in-law. Their names were Perez and Zerah. So Judah had five sons in all.
  • 1 Chronicles 2:5 - The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
  • 1 Chronicles 2:6 - The sons of Zerah were Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Darda —five in all.
  • 1 Chronicles 2:7 - The son of Carmi (a descendant of Zimri) was Achan, who brought disaster on Israel by taking plunder that had been set apart for the Lord.
  • 1 Chronicles 2:8 - The son of Ethan was Azariah.
  • Genesis 30:6 - Rachel named him Dan, for she said, “God has vindicated me! He has heard my request and given me a son.”
  • Genesis 30:7 - Then Bilhah became pregnant again and gave Jacob a second son.
  • Genesis 30:8 - Rachel named him Naphtali, for she said, “I have struggled hard with my sister, and I’m winning!”
  • Genesis 30:9 - Meanwhile, Leah realized that she wasn’t getting pregnant anymore, so she took her servant, Zilpah, and gave her to Jacob as a wife.
  • Genesis 30:10 - Soon Zilpah presented him with a son.
  • Genesis 30:11 - Leah named him Gad, for she said, “How fortunate I am!”
  • Genesis 30:12 - Then Zilpah gave Jacob a second son.
  • Genesis 30:13 - And Leah named him Asher, for she said, “What joy is mine! Now the other women will celebrate with me.”
  • Genesis 30:14 - One day during the wheat harvest, Reuben found some mandrakes growing in a field and brought them to his mother, Leah. Rachel begged Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”
  • Genesis 30:15 - But Leah angrily replied, “Wasn’t it enough that you stole my husband? Now will you steal my son’s mandrakes, too?” Rachel answered, “I will let Jacob sleep with you tonight if you give me some of the mandrakes.”
  • Genesis 30:16 - So that evening, as Jacob was coming home from the fields, Leah went out to meet him. “You must come and sleep with me tonight!” she said. “I have paid for you with some mandrakes that my son found.” So that night he slept with Leah.
  • Genesis 30:17 - And God answered Leah’s prayers. She became pregnant again and gave birth to a fifth son for Jacob.
  • Genesis 30:18 - She named him Issachar, for she said, “God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband as a wife.”
  • Genesis 30:19 - Then Leah became pregnant again and gave birth to a sixth son for Jacob.
  • Genesis 30:20 - She named him Zebulun, for she said, “God has given me a good reward. Now my husband will treat me with respect, for I have given him six sons.”
  • Genesis 30:21 - Later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.
  • Genesis 30:22 - Then God remembered Rachel’s plight and answered her prayers by enabling her to have children.
  • Genesis 30:23 - She became pregnant and gave birth to a son. “God has removed my disgrace,” she said.
  • Genesis 30:24 - And she named him Joseph, for she said, “May the Lord add yet another son to my family.”
  • Genesis 45:26 - “Joseph is still alive!” they told him. “And he is governor of all the land of Egypt!” Jacob was stunned at the news—he couldn’t believe it.
  • Numbers 34:1 - Then the Lord said to Moses,
  • Numbers 34:2 - “Give these instructions to the Israelites: When you come into the land of Canaan, which I am giving you as your special possession, these will be the boundaries.
  • Numbers 34:3 - The southern portion of your country will extend from the wilderness of Zin, along the edge of Edom. The southern boundary will begin on the east at the Dead Sea.
  • Numbers 34:4 - It will then run south past Scorpion Pass in the direction of Zin. Its southernmost point will be Kadesh-barnea, from which it will go to Hazar-addar, and on to Azmon.
  • Numbers 34:5 - From Azmon the boundary will turn toward the Brook of Egypt and end at the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Numbers 34:6 - “Your western boundary will be the coastline of the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Numbers 34:7 - “Your northern boundary will begin at the Mediterranean Sea and run east to Mount Hor,
  • Numbers 34:8 - then to Lebo-hamath, and on through Zedad
  • Numbers 34:9 - and Ziphron to Hazar-enan. This will be your northern boundary.
  • Numbers 34:10 - “The eastern boundary will start at Hazar-enan and run south to Shepham,
  • Numbers 34:11 - then down to Riblah on the east side of Ain. From there the boundary will run down along the eastern edge of the Sea of Galilee,
  • Numbers 34:12 - and then along the Jordan River to the Dead Sea. These are the boundaries of your land.”
  • Numbers 34:13 - Then Moses told the Israelites, “This territory is the homeland you are to divide among yourselves by sacred lot. The Lord has commanded that the land be divided among the nine and a half remaining tribes.
  • Numbers 34:14 - The families of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh have already received their grants of land
  • Numbers 34:15 - on the east side of the Jordan River, across from Jericho toward the sunrise.”
  • Numbers 34:16 - And the Lord said to Moses,
  • Numbers 34:17 - “Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun are the men designated to divide the grants of land among the people.
  • Numbers 34:18 - Enlist one leader from each tribe to help them with the task.
  • Numbers 34:19 - These are the tribes and the names of the leaders: Tribe Leader Judah Caleb son of Jephunneh
  • Numbers 34:20 - Simeon Shemuel son of Ammihud
  • Numbers 34:21 - Benjamin Elidad son of Kislon
  • Numbers 34:22 - Dan Bukki son of Jogli
  • Numbers 34:23 - Manasseh son of Joseph Hanniel son of Ephod
  • Numbers 34:24 - Ephraim son of Joseph Kemuel son of Shiphtan
  • Numbers 34:25 - Zebulun Elizaphan son of Parnach
  • Numbers 34:26 - Issachar Paltiel son of Azzan
  • Numbers 34:27 - Asher Ahihud son of Shelomi
  • Numbers 34:28 - Naphtali Pedahel son of Ammihud
  • Numbers 34:29 - These are the men the Lord has appointed to divide the grants of land in Canaan among the Israelites.”
  • Genesis 44:28 - and one of them went away and never returned. Doubtless he was torn to pieces by some wild animal. I have never seen him since.
  • Genesis 46:8 - These are the names of the descendants of Israel—the sons of Jacob—who went to Egypt: Reuben was Jacob’s oldest son.
  • Genesis 46:9 - The sons of Reuben were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.
  • Genesis 46:10 - The sons of Simeon were Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar, and Shaul. (Shaul’s mother was a Canaanite woman.)

  • Genesis 46:12 - The sons of Judah were Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (though Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan). The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
  • Genesis 46:13 - The sons of Issachar were Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimron.
  • Genesis 46:14 - The sons of Zebulun were Sered, Elon, and Jahleel.
  • Genesis 46:15 - These were the sons of Leah and Jacob who were born in Paddan-aram, in addition to their daughter, Dinah. The number of Jacob’s descendants (male and female) through Leah was thirty-three.
  • Genesis 46:16 - The sons of Gad were Zephon, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli.
  • Genesis 46:17 - The sons of Asher were Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah. Their sister was Serah. Beriah’s sons were Heber and Malkiel.
  • Genesis 46:18 - These were the sons of Zilpah, the servant given to Leah by her father, Laban. The number of Jacob’s descendants through Zilpah was sixteen.
  • Genesis 46:19 - The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin.
  • Genesis 46:20 - Joseph’s sons, born in the land of Egypt, were Manasseh and Ephraim. Their mother was Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, the priest of On.
  • Genesis 46:21 - Benjamin’s sons were Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard.
  • Genesis 46:22 - These were the sons of Rachel and Jacob. The number of Jacob’s descendants through Rachel was fourteen.
  • Genesis 46:23 - The son of Dan was Hushim.
  • Genesis 46:24 - The sons of Naphtali were Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.
  • Genesis 46:25 - These were the sons of Bilhah, the servant given to Rachel by her father, Laban. The number of Jacob’s descendants through Bilhah was seven.
  • Genesis 46:26 - The total number of Jacob’s direct descendants who went with him to Egypt, not counting his sons’ wives, was sixty-six.
  • Genesis 46:27 - In addition, Joseph had two sons who were born in Egypt. So altogether, there were seventy members of Jacob’s family in the land of Egypt.
  • Numbers 1:1 - A year after Israel’s departure from Egypt, the Lord spoke to Moses in the Tabernacle in the wilderness of Sinai. On the first day of the second month of that year he said,
  • Numbers 1:2 - “From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their clans and families. List all the men
  • Numbers 1:3 - twenty years old or older who are able to go to war. You and Aaron must register the troops,
  • Numbers 1:4 - and you will be assisted by one family leader from each tribe.
  • Numbers 1:5 - “These are the tribes and the names of the leaders who will assist you: Tribe Leader Reuben Elizur son of Shedeur
  • Numbers 1:6 - Simeon Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai
  • Numbers 1:7 - Judah Nahshon son of Amminadab
  • Numbers 1:8 - Issachar Nethanel son of Zuar
  • Numbers 1:9 - Zebulun Eliab son of Helon
  • Numbers 1:10 - Ephraim son of Joseph Elishama son of Ammihud Manasseh son of Joseph Gamaliel son of Pedahzur
  • Numbers 1:11 - Benjamin Abidan son of Gideoni
  • Numbers 1:12 - Dan Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai
  • Numbers 1:13 - Asher Pagiel son of Ocran
  • Numbers 1:14 - Gad Eliasaph son of Deuel
  • Numbers 1:15 - Naphtali Ahira son of Enan
  • Numbers 1:16 - These are the chosen leaders of the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.”
  • Numbers 1:17 - So Moses and Aaron called together these chosen leaders,
  • Numbers 1:18 - and they assembled the whole community of Israel on that very day. All the people were registered according to their ancestry by their clans and families. The men of Israel who were twenty years old or older were listed one by one,
  • Numbers 1:19 - just as the Lord had commanded Moses. So Moses recorded their names in the wilderness of Sinai.
  • Numbers 1:20 - This is the number of men twenty years old or older who were able to go to war, as their names were listed in the records of their clans and families : Tribe Number Reuben (Jacob’s oldest son) 46,500
  • Numbers 1:22 - Simeon 59,300
  • Numbers 1:24 - Gad 45,650
  • Numbers 1:26 - Judah 74,600
  • Numbers 1:28 - Issachar 54,400
  • Numbers 1:30 - Zebulun 57,400
  • Numbers 1:32 - Ephraim son of Joseph 40,500
  • Numbers 1:34 - Manasseh son of Joseph 32,200
  • Numbers 1:36 - Benjamin 35,400
  • Numbers 1:38 - Dan 62,700
  • Numbers 1:40 - Asher 41,500
  • Numbers 1:42 - Naphtali 53,400
  • Numbers 1:44 - These were the men registered by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, all listed according to their ancestral descent.
  • Numbers 1:45 - They were registered by families—all the men of Israel who were twenty years old or older and able to go to war.
  • Numbers 1:46 - The total number was 603,550.
  • Numbers 1:47 - But this total did not include the Levites.
  • Numbers 1:48 - For the Lord had said to Moses,
  • Numbers 1:49 - “Do not include the tribe of Levi in the registration; do not count them with the rest of the Israelites.
  • Numbers 1:50 - Put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle of the Covenant, along with all its furnishings and equipment. They must carry the Tabernacle and all its furnishings as you travel, and they must take care of it and camp around it.
  • Numbers 1:51 - Whenever it is time for the Tabernacle to move, the Levites will take it down. And when it is time to stop, they will set it up again. But any unauthorized person who goes too near the Tabernacle must be put to death.
  • Numbers 1:52 - Each tribe of Israel will camp in a designated area with its own family banner.
  • Numbers 1:53 - But the Levites will camp around the Tabernacle of the Covenant to protect the community of Israel from the Lord’s anger. The Levites are responsible to stand guard around the Tabernacle.”
  • Numbers 1:54 - So the Israelites did everything just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
  • Genesis 35:16 - Leaving Bethel, Jacob and his clan moved on toward Ephrath. But Rachel went into labor while they were still some distance away. Her labor pains were intense.
  • Genesis 35:17 - After a very hard delivery, the midwife finally exclaimed, “Don’t be afraid—you have another son!”
  • Genesis 35:18 - Rachel was about to die, but with her last breath she named the baby Ben-oni (which means “son of my sorrow”). The baby’s father, however, called him Benjamin (which means “son of my right hand”).
  • Genesis 35:19 - So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).
  • Genesis 35:20 - Jacob set up a stone monument over Rachel’s grave, and it can be seen there to this day.
  • Genesis 35:21 - Then Jacob traveled on and camped beyond Migdal-eder.
  • Genesis 35:22 - While he was living there, Reuben had intercourse with Bilhah, his father’s concubine, and Jacob soon heard about it. These are the names of the twelve sons of Jacob:
  • Genesis 35:23 - The sons of Leah were Reuben (Jacob’s oldest son), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.
  • Genesis 35:24 - The sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin.
  • Genesis 35:25 - The sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s servant, were Dan and Naphtali.
  • Genesis 35:26 - The sons of Zilpah, Leah’s servant, were Gad and Asher. These are the names of the sons who were born to Jacob at Paddan-aram.
  • Matthew 2:16 - Herod was furious when he realized that the wise men had outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, based on the wise men’s report of the star’s first appearance.
  • Jeremiah 31:15 - This is what the Lord says: “A cry is heard in Ramah— deep anguish and bitter weeping. Rachel weeps for her children, refusing to be comforted— for her children are gone.”
  • Lamentations 5:7 - Our ancestors sinned, but they have died— and we are suffering the punishment they deserved!
  • Exodus 1:2 - Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,
  • Exodus 1:3 - Issachar, Zebulun, Benjamin,
  • Exodus 1:4 - Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
  • Exodus 1:5 - In all, Jacob had seventy descendants in Egypt, including Joseph, who was already there.
  • Genesis 42:38 - But Jacob replied, “My son will not go down with you. His brother Joseph is dead, and he is all I have left. If anything should happen to him on your journey, you would send this grieving, white-haired man to his grave. ”
  • Numbers 26:1 - After the plague had ended, the Lord said to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest,
  • Numbers 26:2 - “From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their families. List all the men twenty years old or older who are able to go to war.”
  • Numbers 26:3 - So there on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest issued these instructions to the leaders of Israel:
  • Numbers 26:4 - “List all the men of Israel twenty years old and older, just as the Lord commanded Moses.” This is the record of all the descendants of Israel who came out of Egypt.
  • Numbers 26:5 - These were the clans descended from the sons of Reuben, Jacob’s oldest son: The Hanochite clan, named after their ancestor Hanoch. The Palluite clan, named after their ancestor Pallu.
  • Numbers 26:6 - The Hezronite clan, named after their ancestor Hezron. The Carmite clan, named after their ancestor Carmi.
  • Numbers 26:7 - These were the clans of Reuben. Their registered troops numbered 43,730.
  • Numbers 26:8 - Pallu was the ancestor of Eliab,
  • Numbers 26:9 - and Eliab was the father of Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. This Dathan and Abiram are the same community leaders who conspired with Korah against Moses and Aaron, rebelling against the Lord.
  • Numbers 26:10 - But the earth opened up its mouth and swallowed them with Korah, and fire devoured 250 of their followers. This served as a warning to the entire nation of Israel.
  • Numbers 26:11 - However, the sons of Korah did not die that day.
  • Numbers 26:12 - These were the clans descended from the sons of Simeon: The Jemuelite clan, named after their ancestor Jemuel. The Jaminite clan, named after their ancestor Jamin. The Jakinite clan, named after their ancestor Jakin.
  • Numbers 26:13 - The Zoharite clan, named after their ancestor Zohar. The Shaulite clan, named after their ancestor Shaul.
  • Numbers 26:14 - These were the clans of Simeon. Their registered troops numbered 22,200.
  • Numbers 26:15 - These were the clans descended from the sons of Gad: The Zephonite clan, named after their ancestor Zephon. The Haggite clan, named after their ancestor Haggi. The Shunite clan, named after their ancestor Shuni.
  • Numbers 26:16 - The Oznite clan, named after their ancestor Ozni. The Erite clan, named after their ancestor Eri.
  • Numbers 26:17 - The Arodite clan, named after their ancestor Arodi. The Arelite clan, named after their ancestor Areli.
  • Numbers 26:18 - These were the clans of Gad. Their registered troops numbered 40,500.
  • Numbers 26:19 - Judah had two sons, Er and Onan, who had died in the land of Canaan.
  • Numbers 26:20 - These were the clans descended from Judah’s surviving sons: The Shelanite clan, named after their ancestor Shelah. The Perezite clan, named after their ancestor Perez. The Zerahite clan, named after their ancestor Zerah.
  • Numbers 26:21 - These were the subclans descended from the Perezites: The Hezronites, named after their ancestor Hezron. The Hamulites, named after their ancestor Hamul.
  • Numbers 26:22 - These were the clans of Judah. Their registered troops numbered 76,500.
  • Numbers 26:23 - These were the clans descended from the sons of Issachar: The Tolaite clan, named after their ancestor Tola. The Puite clan, named after their ancestor Puah.
  • Numbers 26:24 - The Jashubite clan, named after their ancestor Jashub. The Shimronite clan, named after their ancestor Shimron.
  • Numbers 26:25 - These were the clans of Issachar. Their registered troops numbered 64,300.
  • Numbers 26:26 - These were the clans descended from the sons of Zebulun: The Seredite clan, named after their ancestor Sered. The Elonite clan, named after their ancestor Elon. The Jahleelite clan, named after their ancestor Jahleel.
  • Numbers 26:27 - These were the clans of Zebulun. Their registered troops numbered 60,500.
  • Numbers 26:28 - Two clans were descended from Joseph through Manasseh and Ephraim.
  • Numbers 26:29 - These were the clans descended from Manasseh: The Makirite clan, named after their ancestor Makir. The Gileadite clan, named after their ancestor Gilead, Makir’s son.
  • Numbers 26:30 - These were the subclans descended from the Gileadites: The Iezerites, named after their ancestor Iezer. The Helekites, named after their ancestor Helek.
  • Numbers 26:31 - The Asrielites, named after their ancestor Asriel. The Shechemites, named after their ancestor Shechem.
  • Numbers 26:32 - The Shemidaites, named after their ancestor Shemida. The Hepherites, named after their ancestor Hepher.
  • Numbers 26:33 - (One of Hepher’s descendants, Zelophehad, had no sons, but his daughters’ names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.)
  • Numbers 26:34 - These were the clans of Manasseh. Their registered troops numbered 52,700.
  • Numbers 26:35 - These were the clans descended from the sons of Ephraim: The Shuthelahite clan, named after their ancestor Shuthelah. The Bekerite clan, named after their ancestor Beker. The Tahanite clan, named after their ancestor Tahan.
  • Numbers 26:36 - This was the subclan descended from the Shuthelahites: The Eranites, named after their ancestor Eran.
  • Numbers 26:37 - These were the clans of Ephraim. Their registered troops numbered 32,500. These clans of Manasseh and Ephraim were all descendants of Joseph.
  • Numbers 26:38 - These were the clans descended from the sons of Benjamin: The Belaite clan, named after their ancestor Bela. The Ashbelite clan, named after their ancestor Ashbel. The Ahiramite clan, named after their ancestor Ahiram.
  • Numbers 26:39 - The Shuphamite clan, named after their ancestor Shupham. The Huphamite clan, named after their ancestor Hupham.
  • Numbers 26:40 - These were the subclans descended from the Belaites: The Ardites, named after their ancestor Ard. The Naamites, named after their ancestor Naaman.
  • Numbers 26:41 - These were the clans of Benjamin. Their registered troops numbered 45,600.
  • Numbers 26:42 - These were the clans descended from the sons of Dan: The Shuhamite clan, named after their ancestor Shuham.
  • Numbers 26:43 - These were the Shuhamite clans of Dan. Their registered troops numbered 64,400.
  • Numbers 26:44 - These were the clans descended from the sons of Asher: The Imnite clan, named after their ancestor Imnah. The Ishvite clan, named after their ancestor Ishvi. The Beriite clan, named after their ancestor Beriah.
  • Numbers 26:45 - These were the subclans descended from the Beriites: The Heberites, named after their ancestor Heber. The Malkielites, named after their ancestor Malkiel.
  • Numbers 26:46 - Asher also had a daughter named Serah.
  • Numbers 26:47 - These were the clans of Asher. Their registered troops numbered 53,400.
  • Numbers 26:48 - These were the clans descended from the sons of Naphtali: The Jahzeelite clan, named after their ancestor Jahzeel. The Gunite clan, named after their ancestor Guni.
  • Numbers 26:49 - The Jezerite clan, named after their ancestor Jezer. The Shillemite clan, named after their ancestor Shillem.
  • Numbers 26:50 - These were the clans of Naphtali. Their registered troops numbered 45,400.
  • Numbers 26:51 - In summary, the registered troops of all Israel numbered 601,730.
  • Numbers 26:52 - Then the Lord said to Moses,
  • Numbers 26:53 - “Divide the land among the tribes, and distribute the grants of land in proportion to the tribes’ populations, as indicated by the number of names on the list.
  • Numbers 26:54 - Give the larger tribes more land and the smaller tribes less land, each group receiving a grant in proportion to the size of its population.
  • Numbers 26:55 - But you must assign the land by lot, and give land to each ancestral tribe according to the number of names on the list.
  • Numbers 26:56 - Each grant of land must be assigned by lot among the larger and smaller tribal groups.”
  • Numbers 26:57 - This is the record of the Levites who were counted according to their clans: The Gershonite clan, named after their ancestor Gershon. The Kohathite clan, named after their ancestor Kohath. The Merarite clan, named after their ancestor Merari.
  • Numbers 26:58 - The Libnites, the Hebronites, the Mahlites, the Mushites, and the Korahites were all subclans of the Levites. Now Kohath was the ancestor of Amram,
  • Numbers 26:59 - and Amram’s wife was named Jochebed. She also was a descendant of Levi, born among the Levites in the land of Egypt. Amram and Jochebed became the parents of Aaron, Moses, and their sister, Miriam.
  • Numbers 26:60 - To Aaron were born Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
  • Numbers 26:61 - But Nadab and Abihu died when they burned before the Lord the wrong kind of fire, different than he had commanded.
  • Numbers 26:62 - The men from the Levite clans who were one month old or older numbered 23,000. But the Levites were not included in the registration of the rest of the people of Israel because they were not given an allotment of land when it was divided among the Israelites.
  • Numbers 26:63 - So these are the results of the registration of the people of Israel as conducted by Moses and Eleazar the priest on the plains of Moab beside the Jordan River, across from Jericho.
  • Numbers 26:64 - Not one person on this list had been among those listed in the previous registration taken by Moses and Aaron in the wilderness of Sinai.
  • Numbers 26:65 - For the Lord had said of them, “They will all die in the wilderness.” Not one of them survived except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
  • Genesis 42:11 - We are all brothers—members of the same family. We are honest men, sir! We are not spies!”
  • Numbers 10:1 - Now the Lord said to Moses,
  • Numbers 10:2 - “Make two trumpets of hammered silver for calling the community to assemble and for signaling the breaking of camp.
  • Numbers 10:3 - When both trumpets are blown, everyone must gather before you at the entrance of the Tabernacle.
  • Numbers 10:4 - But if only one trumpet is blown, then only the leaders—the heads of the clans of Israel—must present themselves to you.
  • Numbers 10:5 - “When you sound the signal to move on, the tribes camped on the east side of the Tabernacle must break camp and move forward.
  • Numbers 10:6 - When you sound the signal a second time, the tribes camped on the south will follow. You must sound short blasts as the signal for moving on.
  • Numbers 10:7 - But when you call the people to an assembly, blow the trumpets with a different signal.
  • Numbers 10:8 - Only the priests, Aaron’s descendants, are allowed to blow the trumpets. This is a permanent law for you, to be observed from generation to generation.
  • Numbers 10:9 - “When you arrive in your own land and go to war against your enemies who attack you, sound the alarm with the trumpets. Then the Lord your God will remember you and rescue you from your enemies.
  • Numbers 10:10 - Blow the trumpets in times of gladness, too, sounding them at your annual festivals and at the beginning of each month. And blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and peace offerings. The trumpets will remind your God of his covenant with you. I am the Lord your God.”
  • Numbers 10:11 - In the second year after Israel’s departure from Egypt—on the twentieth day of the second month —the cloud lifted from the Tabernacle of the Covenant.
  • Numbers 10:12 - So the Israelites set out from the wilderness of Sinai and traveled on from place to place until the cloud stopped in the wilderness of Paran.
  • Numbers 10:13 - When the people set out for the first time, following the instructions the Lord had given through Moses,
  • Numbers 10:14 - Judah’s troops led the way. They marched behind their banner, and their leader was Nahshon son of Amminadab.
  • Numbers 10:15 - They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Issachar, led by Nethanel son of Zuar,
  • Numbers 10:16 - and the troops of the tribe of Zebulun, led by Eliab son of Helon.
  • Numbers 10:17 - Then the Tabernacle was taken down, and the Gershonite and Merarite divisions of the Levites were next in the line of march, carrying the Tabernacle with them.
  • Numbers 10:18 - Reuben’s troops went next, marching behind their banner. Their leader was Elizur son of Shedeur.
  • Numbers 10:19 - They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Simeon, led by Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai,
  • Numbers 10:20 - and the troops of the tribe of Gad, led by Eliasaph son of Deuel.
  • Numbers 10:21 - Next came the Kohathite division of the Levites, carrying the sacred objects from the Tabernacle. Before they arrived at the next camp, the Tabernacle would already be set up at its new location.
  • Numbers 10:22 - Ephraim’s troops went next, marching behind their banner. Their leader was Elishama son of Ammihud.
  • Numbers 10:23 - They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Manasseh, led by Gamaliel son of Pedahzur,
  • Numbers 10:24 - and the troops of the tribe of Benjamin, led by Abidan son of Gideoni.
  • Numbers 10:25 - Dan’s troops went last, marching behind their banner and serving as the rear guard for all the tribal camps. Their leader was Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.
  • Numbers 10:26 - They were joined by the troops of the tribe of Asher, led by Pagiel son of Ocran,
  • Numbers 10:27 - and the troops of the tribe of Naphtali, led by Ahira son of Enan.
  • Numbers 10:28 - This was the order in which the Israelites marched, division by division.
  • Numbers 10:29 - One day Moses said to his brother-in-law, Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, “We are on our way to the place the Lord promised us, for he said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised wonderful blessings for Israel!”
  • Numbers 10:30 - But Hobab replied, “No, I will not go. I must return to my own land and family.”
  • Numbers 10:31 - “Please don’t leave us,” Moses pleaded. “You know the places in the wilderness where we should camp. Come, be our guide.
  • Numbers 10:32 - If you do, we’ll share with you all the blessings the Lord gives us.”
  • Numbers 10:33 - They marched for three days after leaving the mountain of the Lord, with the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant moving ahead of them to show them where to stop and rest.
  • Numbers 10:34 - As they moved on each day, the cloud of the Lord hovered over them.
  • Numbers 10:35 - And whenever the Ark set out, Moses would shout, “Arise, O Lord, and let your enemies be scattered! Let them flee before you!”
  • Numbers 10:36 - And when the Ark was set down, he would say, “Return, O Lord, to the countless thousands of Israel!”
  • Genesis 29:32 - So Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said, “The Lord has noticed my misery, and now my husband will love me.”
  • Genesis 29:33 - She soon became pregnant again and gave birth to another son. She named him Simeon, for she said, “The Lord heard that I was unloved and has given me another son.”
  • Genesis 29:34 - Then she became pregnant a third time and gave birth to another son. He was named Levi, for she said, “Surely this time my husband will feel affection for me, since I have given him three sons!”
  • Genesis 29:35 - Once again Leah became pregnant and gave birth to another son. She named him Judah, for she said, “Now I will praise the Lord!” And then she stopped having children.
  • Matthew 2:18 - “A cry was heard in Ramah— weeping and great mourning. Rachel weeps for her children, refusing to be comforted, for they are dead.”
  • Genesis 43:7 - “The man kept asking us questions about our family,” they replied. “He asked, ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ So we answered his questions. How could we know he would say, ‘Bring your brother down here’?”
  • Genesis 42:32 - We are twelve brothers, sons of one father. One brother is no longer with us, and the youngest is at home with our father in the land of Canaan.’
  • Genesis 44:20 - And we responded, ‘Yes, my lord, we have a father who is an old man, and his youngest son is a child of his old age. His full brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother’s children, and his father loves him very much.’
  • Genesis 37:30 - Then he went back to his brothers and lamented, “The boy is gone! What will I do now?”
