Come to Our Help
To the choirmaster. 44:0 Ps. 42, titleA Maskil44:1 Probably a musical or liturgical term of the Sons of Korah.

1O God, we have heard with our ears,
44:1 Ps. 78:3; Ex. 10:2; 12:26, 27; 13:8, 14, 15; Judg. 6:13; See Deut. 6:20-23our fathers have told us,
what deeds you performed in their days,
44:1 See Ps. 77:5in the days of old:
2you with your own hand 44:2 Ps. 78:55; 80:8; Josh. 3:10drove out the nations,
but 44:2 Ex. 15:17; 2 Sam. 7:10them you planted;
you afflicted the peoples,
but 44:2 Ps. 80:9-11; [Jer. 17:8]them you set free;
3for not 44:3 Josh. 24:12; Hos. 1:7by their own sword did they win the land,
nor did their own arm save them,
but your right hand and your arm,
and 44:3 See Ps. 4:6the light of your face,
44:3 Deut. 4:37; 7:7, 8; 10:15for you delighted in them.

444:4 Ps. 74:12You are my King, O God;
44:4 See Ps. 42:8ordain salvation for Jacob!
5Through you we 44:5 [Deut. 33:17; Dan. 8:4] push down our foes;
through your name we 44:5 Ps. 60:12tread down those who rise up against us.
6For not in 44:6 [Ps. 33:16; 1 Sam. 17:47]my bow do I trust,
nor can my sword save me.
7But you have saved us from our foes
and have 44:7 See Ps. 35:4put to shame those who hate us.
844:8 See Ps. 34:2In God we have boasted continually,
and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah

9But you have 44:9 ver. 23; Ps. 43:2; 60:1, 10; 74:1; 108:11; See Ps. 89:38-45rejected us and disgraced us
and 44:9 [Judg. 4:14; 2 Sam. 5:24]have not gone out with our armies.
10You have made us 44:10 Lev. 26:17; Deut. 28:25; Josh. 7:8, 12turn back from the foe,
and those who hate us have gotten spoil.
11You have made us like 44:11 [ver. 22] sheep for slaughter
and have 44:11 Ps. 106:27; Lev. 26:33; Deut. 4:27; 28:64; Isa. 52:3; Ezek. 20:23; [John 7:35; 1 Pet. 1:1]scattered us among the nations.
1244:12 [Deut. 32:30; Judg. 2:14; 3:8; Jer. 15:13]You have sold your people for a trifle,
demanding no high price for them.
13You have made us 44:13 Ps. 39:8; 79:4; 89:41; 119:22; [Neh. 2:17] the taunt of our neighbors,
the derision and 44:13 [Ps. 80:6]scorn of those around us.
14You have made us 44:14 Jer. 24:9; See Job 17:6a byword among the nations,
44:14 See Job 16:4a laughingstock44:14 Hebrew a shaking of the head among the peoples.
15All day long my disgrace is before me,
and 44:15 2 Chr. 32:21shame has covered my face
16at the sound of the taunter and reviler,
at the sight of 44:16 Ps. 8:2the enemy and the avenger.

1744:17 Dan. 9:13All this has come upon us,
though we have not forgotten you,
and we have not been false to your covenant.
18Our heart has not turned back,
nor have our 44:18 Ps. 37:31steps 44:18 Ps. 119:51, 157; Job 23:11departed from your way;
19yet you have 44:19 Ps. 51:8broken us in the place of 44:19 See Job 30:29jackals
and covered us with 44:19 See Job 3:5the shadow of death.
20If we had forgotten the name of our God
or 44:20 Ps. 68:31; Job 11:13spread out our hands to 44:20 See Ps. 81:9a foreign god,
2144:21 Ps. 139:1; Jer. 17:10would not God discover this?
44:21 [John 2:25; Heb. 4:13]For he knows the secrets of the heart.
22Yet 44:22 ver. 11; Cited Rom. 8:36for your sake we are killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

2344:23 See Ps. 35:23Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord?
Rouse yourself! 44:23 ver. 9Do not reject us forever!
24Why 44:24 See Job 13:24do you hide your face?
Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?
25For our 44:25 Ps. 119:25soul is bowed down to the dust;
our belly clings to the ground.
26Rise up; 44:26 Ps. 63:7come to our help!
44:26 See Ps. 25:22Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!
