Do Not Forsake Me, O Lord
A Psalm of David, 38:0 Ps. 70, title; [1 Chr. 16:4]for the memorial offering.

1O Lord, 38:1 Ps. 6:1rebuke me not in your anger,
nor discipline me in your wrath!
2For your 38:2 Job 6:4arrows have sunk into me,
and your hand 38:2 See Ps. 32:4has come down on me.

3There is 38:3 Isa. 1:6no soundness in my flesh
because of your indignation;
there is no health in my 38:3 See Ps. 31:10bones
because of my sin.
4For my 38:4 Ps. 40:12; Ezra 9:6iniquities have gone over my head;
like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me.

5My wounds stink and fester
because of my foolishness,
6I am 38:6 Ps. 35:14; 42:5, 6, 11; 43:5utterly bowed down and 38:6 Isa. 21:3prostrate;
all the day I 38:6 [Job 30:28]go about mourning.
7For my sides are filled with burning,
and there is 38:7 [See ver. 3above]no soundness in my flesh.
8I am feeble and crushed;
I 38:8 See Ps. 22:1groan because of the tumult of my heart.

9O Lord, all my longing is before you;
my 38:9 Ps. 6:6sighing is not hidden from you.
10My heart throbs; my strength fails me,
and 38:10 See Ps. 6:7the light of my eyes—it also has gone from me.
11My 38:11 Ps. 88:18; See Job 19:13-20friends and companions 38:11 [Luke 10:31, 32] stand aloof from my 38:11 Ps. 39:10; Isa. 53:4, 8plague,
and my nearest kin 38:11 [Matt. 27:55; Mark 15:40; Luke 23:49]stand far off.

12Those who seek my life 38:12 [Matt. 22:15]; Mark 12:13; Luke 20:20; See 2 Sam. 17:1-3lay their snares;
those who seek my hurt 38:12 [2 Sam. 16:7, 8] speak of ruin
and meditate 38:12 Ps. 35:20treachery all day long.

13But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear,
like 38:13 Ps. 39:2, 9; Isa. 53:7; 1 Pet. 2:23a mute man who does not open his mouth.
14I have become like a man who does not hear,
and in whose mouth are no 38:14 [Job 23:4]rebukes.

15But for 38:15 Ps. 39:7; [2 Sam. 16:12]you, O Lord, do I wait;
it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer.
16For I said, “Only 38:16 [Ps. 13:4] let them not rejoice over me,
who 38:16 See Job 19:5boast against me when my 38:16 Ps. 94:18foot slips!”

17For I am 38:17 Ps. 35:15; Jer. 20:10ready to fall,
and my pain is ever before me.
18I 38:18 See Ps. 32:5confess my iniquity;
I am 38:18 [2 Cor. 7:9, 10]sorry for my sin.
19But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty,
and many are those who hate me 38:19 Ps. 35:19wrongfully.
20Those who 38:20 See Ps. 35:12render me evil for good
38:20 Ps. 109:4accuse me because I 38:20 [3 John 11]follow after good.

21Do not forsake me, O Lord!
O my God, be not 38:21 See Ps. 10:1far from me!
2238:22 See Ps. 40:13Make haste to help me,
O Lord, my 38:22 See Ps. 27:1salvation!
