Unless the Lord Builds the House

A Song of 127:0 [See Ps. 120, title]Ascents. Of Solomon.

1Unless the Lord builds the house,

those who build it labor in vain.

Unless the Lord127:1 See Ps. 121:4watches over the city,

the watchman stays awake in vain.

2It is in vain that you rise up early

and go late to rest,

eating the bread of anxious 127:2 Gen. 3:17, 19toil;

for he gives to his 127:2 Ps. 60:5beloved 127:2 [Mark 4:26, 27]sleep.

3Behold, 127:3 [Gen. 33:5] children are a heritage from the Lord,

127:3 Deut. 28:4; [Ps. 132:11]the fruit of the womb a reward.

4Like arrows in the hand of 127:4 Ps. 120:4a warrior

are the children127:4 Or sons of one’s youth.

5Blessed is the man

who fills his quiver with them!

He shall not be put to shame

when he speaks with his enemies 127:5 See Job 5:4in the gate.127:5 Or They shall not be put to shame when they speak with their enemies in the gate
