此乃淫佚之邑、僭稱主母、自謂莫之與京、今變荒蕪、獸伏其間、凡過之者、必作怨憤之聲、搖首不已。

Nineveh was a carefree city. It lived in safety. It said to itself,“ I am the one! No one is greater than I am.” But it has been destroyed. Wild animals make their home there. All those who pass by laugh and shake their fists at it.

This is the exultant city that lived securely, that said in her heart,“ I am, and there is no one else.” What a desolation she has become, a lair for wild beasts! Everyone who passes by her hisses and shakes his fist.

This is the boisterous city, once so secure.“ I am the greatest!” it boasted.“ No other city can compare with me!” But now, look how it has become an utter ruin, a haven for wild animals. Everyone passing by will laugh in derision and shake a defiant fist.

This is the jubilant city that lives in security, that says to herself: I exist, and there is no one else. What a desolation she has become, a place for wild animals to lie down! Everyone who passes by her scoffs and shakes his fist.

This is the presumptuous city That dwells securely, Who says in her heart,“ I am, and there is no one besides me.” How she has become a desolation, A resting place for animals! Everyone who passes by her will hiss And wave his hand in contempt.

This is the rejoicing city That dwelt securely, That said in her heart,“ I am it, and there is none besides me.” How has she become a desolation, A place for beasts to lie down! Everyone who passes by her Shall hiss and shake his fist.

This is the joyous city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none besides me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

This is the self-assured city that lives in security, that thinks to herself: I exist, and there is no one else. What a desolation she has become, a place for wild animals to lie down! Everyone who passes by her jeers and shakes his fist.

This[ is] the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I[ am], and[ there is] none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss,[ and] wag his hand.

This is how the once-proud city will end up– the city that was so secure. She thought to herself,“ I am unique! No one can compare to me!” What a heap of ruins she has become, a place where wild animals live! Everyone who passes by her taunts her and shakes his fist.

“ Son of man, say to the ruler of Tyre,‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says:“‘ In the pride of your heart you say,“ I am a god; I sit on the throne of a god in the heart of the seas.” But you are a mere mortal and not a god, though you think you are as wise as a god.

You said,‘ I am forever— the eternal queen!’ But you did not consider these things or reflect on what might happen.“ Now then, listen, you lover of pleasure, lounging in your security and saying to yourself,‘ I am, and there is none besides me. I will never be a widow or suffer the loss of children.’

Nothing can heal you; your wound is fatal. All who hear the news about you clap their hands at your fall, for who has not felt your endless cruelty?

you town so full of commotion, you city of tumult and revelry? Your slain were not killed by the sword, nor did they die in battle.

I will devastate this city and make it an object of horror and scorn; all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff because of all its wounds.

How deserted lies the city, once so full of people! How like a widow is she, who once was great among the nations! She who was queen among the provinces has now become a slave.

All who pass your way clap their hands at you; they scoff and shake their heads at Daughter Jerusalem:“ Is this the city that was called the perfection of beauty, the joy of the whole earth?”

Will you then say,“ I am a god,” in the presence of those who kill you? You will be but a mortal, not a god, in the hands of those who slay you.

The merchants among the nations scoff at you; you have come to a horrible end and will be no more.’”

Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads

Give her as much torment and grief as the glory and luxury she gave herself. In her heart she boasts,‘ I sit enthroned as queen. I am not a widow; I will never mourn.’Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her: death, mourning and famine. In one hour your doom has come!’“ The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore—cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.“ They will say,‘ The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her will stand far off, terrified at her torment. They will weep and mournand cry out:“‘ Woe! Woe to you, great city, dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet, and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!In one hour such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’“ Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off.When they see the smoke of her burning, they will exclaim,‘ Was there ever a city like this great city?’They will throw dust on their heads, and with weeping and mourning cry out:“‘ Woe! Woe to you, great city, where all who had ships on the sea became rich through her wealth! In one hour she has been brought to ruin!’

How the Lord has covered Daughter Zion with the cloud of his anger! He has hurled down the splendor of Israel from heaven to earth; he has not remembered his footstool in the day of his anger.

When the Lord has finished all his work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, he will say,“ I will punish the king of Assyria for the willful pride of his heart and the haughty look in his eyes.For he says:“‘ By the strength of my hand I have done this, and by my wisdom, because I have understanding. I removed the boundaries of nations, I plundered their treasures; like a mighty one I subdued their kings.As one reaches into a nest, so my hand reached for the wealth of the nations; as people gather abandoned eggs, so I gathered all the countries; not one flapped a wing, or opened its mouth to chirp.’”

You women who are so complacent, rise up and listen to me; you daughters who feel secure, hear what I have to say!

then I will cut off Israel from the land I have given them and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name. Israel will then become a byword and an object of ridicule among all peoples.This temple will become a heap of rubble. All who pass by will be appalled and will scoff and say,‘ Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’

Speak to him and say:‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says:“‘ I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt, you great monster lying among your streams. You say,“ The Nile belongs to me; I made it for myself.”

It claps its hands in derision and hisses him out of his place.”

you will take up this taunt against the king of Babylon: How the oppressor has come to an end! How his fury has ended!The Lord has broken the rod of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers,

The righteous will see and fear; they will laugh at you, saying,“ Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others!”
