此乃歡樂之邑、安居無慮、其心自謂惟我而已、我外無他、今奚荒寂、成為獸臥之所、凡經過者、必搖手而嗤笑之、

此乃淫佚之邑、僭稱主母、自謂莫之與京、今變荒蕪、獸伏其間、凡過之者、必作怨憤之聲、搖首不已。

此邑素淫樂、安居無畏、心中曰、惟有我、我外無他、忽變荒蕪、獸伏之處、凡過之者、俱戲笑搖首、

This is the city of revelry that lived in safety. She said to herself,“ I am the one! And there is none besides me.” What a ruin she has become, a lair for wild beasts! All who pass by her scoff and shake their fists.

Nineveh was a carefree city. It lived in safety. It said to itself,“ I am the one! No one is greater than I am.” But it has been destroyed. Wild animals make their home there. All those who pass by laugh and shake their fists at it.

This is the exultant city that lived securely, that said in her heart,“ I am, and there is no one else.” What a desolation she has become, a lair for wild beasts! Everyone who passes by her hisses and shakes his fist.

This is the boisterous city, once so secure.“ I am the greatest!” it boasted.“ No other city can compare with me!” But now, look how it has become an utter ruin, a haven for wild animals. Everyone passing by will laugh in derision and shake a defiant fist.

This is the jubilant city that lives in security, that says to herself: I exist, and there is no one else. What a desolation she has become, a place for wild animals to lie down! Everyone who passes by her scoffs and shakes his fist.

This[ is] the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I[ am], and[ there is] none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss,[ and] wag his hand.

This is how the once-proud city will end up– the city that was so secure. She thought to herself,“ I am unique! No one can compare to me!” What a heap of ruins she has become, a place where wild animals live! Everyone who passes by her taunts her and shakes his fist.

“ Son of man, say to the leader of Tyre,‘ The Lord God says this:“ Because your heart is haughty And you have said,‘ I am a god, I sit in the seat of gods In the heart of the seas’; Yet you are a mortal and not God, Although you make your heart like the heart of God—

Yet you said,‘ I will be a queen forever.’ These things you did not consider Nor remember the outcome of them.“ Now, then, hear this, you luxuriant one, Who lives securely, Who says in her heart,‘ I am, and there is no one besides me. I will not sit as a widow, Nor know the loss of children.’

There is no relief for your collapse, Your wound is incurable. All who hear about you Will clap their hands over you, For upon whom has your evil not come continually?

You who were full of noise, You tumultuous town, you jubilant city; Your dead were not killed with the sword, Nor did they die in battle.

I will also turn this city into an object of horror and hissing; everyone who passes by it will be appalled and hiss because of all its disasters.

How lonely sits the city That once had many people! She has become like a widow Who was once great among the nations! She who was a princess among the provinces Has become a forced laborer!

All who pass along the way Clap their hands in ridicule at you; They hiss and shake their heads At the daughter of Jerusalem:“ Is this the city of which they said,‘ Perfect in beauty, A joy to all the earth’?”

Will you still say,“ I am a god,” In the presence of one who kills you, Though you are a mortal and not God, In the hands of those who wound you?

The merchants among the peoples hiss at you; You have become terrified And you will cease to be forever.’ ” ’ ”

And those passing by were speaking abusively to Him, shaking their heads,

To the extent that she glorified herself and lived luxuriously, to the same extent give her torment and mourning; for she says in her heart,‘ I sit as a queen and I am not a widow, and will never see mourning.’For this reason in one day her plagues will come, plague and mourning and famine, and she will be burned up with fire; for the Lord God who judges her is strong.“ And the kings of the earth, who committed acts of sexual immorality and lived luxuriously with her, will weep and mourn over her when they see the smoke of her burning,standing at a distance because of the fear of her torment, saying,‘ Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For in one hour your judgment has come.’“ And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn over her, because no one buys their cargo any more—cargo of gold, silver, precious stones, and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet; every kind of citron wood, every article of ivory, and every article made from very valuable wood, bronze, iron, and marble;cinnamon, spice, incense, perfume, frankincense, wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, and cargo of horses, carriages, slaves, and human lives.The fruit you long for has left you, and all things that were luxurious and splendid have passed away from you and people will no longer find them.The merchants of these things, who became rich from her, will stand at a distance because of the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning,saying,‘ Woe, woe, the great city, she who was clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls;for in one hour such great wealth has been laid waste!’ And every shipmaster and every passenger and sailor, and all who make their living by the sea, stood at a distance,and were crying out as they saw the smoke of her burning, saying,‘ What city is like the great city?’And they threw dust on their heads and were crying out, weeping and mourning, saying,‘ Woe, woe, the great city, in which all who had ships at sea became rich from her prosperity, for in one hour she has been laid waste!’

How the Lord has covered the daughter of Zion With a cloud in His anger! He has hurled The glory of Israel from heaven to earth, And has not remembered His footstool In the day of His anger.

So it will be that when the Lord has completed all His work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, He will say,“ I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the arrogant pride of his eyes.”For he has said,“ By the power of my hand and by my wisdom I did this, Because I have understanding; And I removed the boundaries of the peoples And plundered their treasures, And like a powerful man I brought down their inhabitants,And my hand reached to the riches of the peoples like a nest, And as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth; And there was not one that flapped its wing, opened its beak, or chirped.”

Rise up, you women who are at ease, And hear my voice; Listen to my word, You complacent daughters.

then I will cut Israel off from the land which I have given them, and the house which I have consecrated for My name, I will expel from My sight. So Israel will become a saying and an object of derision among all peoples.And this house will become a heap of ruins; everyone who passes by it will be appalled and hiss and say,‘ Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and this house?’

Speak and say,‘ This is what the Lord God says:“ Behold, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt, The great monster that lies in the midst of his canals, That has said,‘ My Nile is mine, and I myself have made it.’

People will clap their hands at him, And will whistle at him from their places.

that you will take up this taunt against the king of Babylon, and say,“ How the oppressor has ceased, And how the onslaught has ceased!The Lord has broken the staff of the wicked, The scepter of rulers,

The righteous will see and fear, And they will laugh at him, saying,“ Behold, the man who would not make God his refuge, But trusted in the abundance of his riches And was strong in his evil desire.”
