Your silver and gold will not save you on that day of the Lord’s anger. For the whole land will be devoured by the fire of his jealousy. He will make a terrifying end of all the people on earth.

Therefore you must wait patiently for me,” says the LORD,“ for the day when I attack and take plunder. I have decided to gather nations together and assemble kingdoms, so I can pour out my fury on them– all my raging anger. For the whole earth will be consumed by my fiery anger.

They will discard their silver in the streets, and their gold will be treated like filth. Their silver and gold will not be able to deliver them on the day of the LORD’s fury. They will not satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs because their wealth was the obstacle leading to their iniquity.

Wealth does not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from mortal danger.

“ I will destroy everything from the face of the earth,” says the LORD.“ I will destroy people and animals; I will destroy the birds in the sky and the fish in the sea.( The idolatrous images of these creatures will be destroyed along with evil people.) I will remove humanity from the face of the earth,” says the Lord.

So the LORD said,“ I will wipe humankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth– everything from humankind to animals, including creatures that move on the ground and birds of the air, for I regret that I have made them.”

Look, the LORD is ready to devastate the earth and leave it in ruins; he will mar its surface and scatter its inhabitants.Everyone will suffer– the priest as well as the people, the master as well as the servant, the elegant lady as well as the female attendant, the seller as well as the buyer, the borrower as well as the lender, the creditor as well as the debtor.The earth will be completely devastated and thoroughly ransacked. For the LORD has decreed this judgment.The earth dries up and withers, the world shrivels up and withers; the prominent people of the earth fade away.The earth is defiled by its inhabitants, for they have violated laws, disregarded the regulation, and broken the permanent treaty.So a treaty curse devours the earth; its inhabitants pay for their guilt. This is why the inhabitants of the earth disappear, and are reduced to just a handful of people.The new wine dries up, the vines shrivel up, all those who like to celebrate groan.The happy sound of the tambourines stops, the revelry of those who celebrate comes to a halt, the happy sound of the harp ceases.They no longer sing and drink wine; the beer tastes bitter to those who drink it.The ruined town is shattered; all of the houses are shut up tight.They howl in the streets because of what happened to the wine; all joy turns to sorrow; celebrations disappear from the earth.The city is left in ruins; the gate is reduced to rubble.

Or are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we really stronger than he is?

The LORD said,“ I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins. Jackals will make their home there. I will destroy the towns of Judah so that no one will be able to live in them.”

Therefore, the sovereign LORD who commands armies, the powerful ruler of Israel, says this:“ Ah, I will seek vengeance against my adversaries, I will take revenge against my enemies.

that the evil man is spared from the day of his misfortune, that he is delivered from the day of God’s wrath?

For what does it benefit a person if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or what can a person give in exchange for his life?

And I will say to myself,“ You have plenty of goods stored up for many years; relax, eat, drink, celebrate!”’But God said to him,‘ You fool! This very night your life will be demanded back from you, but who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’So it is with the one who stores up riches for himself, but is not rich toward God.”

Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD. They made him more jealous by their sins than their ancestors had done.

The LORD says,“ Wise people should not boast that they are wise. Powerful people should not boast that they are powerful. Rich people should not boast that they are rich.If people want to boast, they should boast about this: They should boast that they understand and know me. They should boast that they know and understand that I, the LORD, act out of faithfulness, fairness, and justice in the earth and that I desire people to do these things,” says the LORD.

At that time my anger will erupt against them and I will abandon them and hide my face from them until they are devoured. Many disasters and distresses will overcome them so that they will say at that time,‘ Have not these disasters overcome us because our God is not among us?’

The LORD will be unwilling to forgive him, and his intense anger will rage against that man; all the curses written in this scroll will fall upon him and the LORD will obliterate his name from memory.The LORD will single him out for judgment from all the tribes of Israel according to all the curses of the covenant written in this scroll of the law.The generation to come– your descendants who will rise up after you, as well as the foreigner who will come from distant places– will see the afflictions of that land and the illnesses that the LORD has brought on it.The whole land will be covered with brimstone, salt, and burning debris; it will not be planted nor will it sprout or produce grass. It will resemble the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD destroyed in his intense anger.Then all the nations will ask,“ Why has the LORD done all this to this land? What is this fierce, heated display of anger all about?”Then people will say,“ Because they abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their ancestors, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.They went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods they did not know and that he did not permit them to worship.That is why the LORD’s anger erupted against this land, bringing on it all the curses written in this scroll.So the LORD has uprooted them from their land in anger, wrath, and great rage and has deported them to another land, as is clear today.”

They made him angry with their pagan shrines, and made him jealous with their idols.

They have made me jealous with false gods, enraging me with their worthless gods; so I will make them jealous with a people they do not recognize, with a nation slow to learn I will enrage them.For a fire has been kindled by my anger, and it burns to lowest Sheol; it consumes the earth and its produce, and ignites the foundations of the mountains.I will increase their disasters, I will use up my arrows on them.They will be starved by famine, eaten by plague, and bitterly stung; I will send the teeth of wild animals against them, along with the poison of creatures that crawl in the dust.The sword will make people childless outside, and terror will do so inside; they will destroy both the young man and the virgin, the infant and the gray-haired man.

That day will be a day of God’s anger, a day of distress and hardship, a day of devastation and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and dark skies,

Wail, you who live in the market district, for all the merchants will disappear and those who count money will be removed.

“ Now the poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.And in hell, as he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far off with Lazarus at his side.

They trust in their wealth and boast in their great riches.Certainly a man cannot rescue his brother; he cannot pay God an adequate ransom price( the ransom price for a human life is too high, and people go to their final destiny),so that he might continue to live forever and not experience death.

I will scatter you among the nations and unsheathe the sword after you, so your land will become desolate and your cities will become a waste.“‘ Then the land will make up for its Sabbaths all the days it lies desolate while you are in the land of your enemies; then the land will rest and make up its Sabbaths.All the days of the desolation it will have the rest it did not have on your Sabbaths when you lived on it.

How long will this go on, O LORD? Will you stay angry forever? How long will your rage burn like fire?

I will put an end to the sounds of joy and gladness, or the glad celebration of brides and grooms throughout the towns of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem. For the whole land will become a desolate wasteland.”

I looked and saw that the fruitful land had become a desert and that all of the cities had been laid in ruins. The LORD had brought this all about because of his blazing anger.All this will happen because the LORD said,“ The whole land will be desolate; however, I will not completely destroy it.Because of this the land will mourn and the sky above will grow black. For I have made my purpose known and I will not relent or turn back from carrying it out.”At the sound of the approaching horsemen and archers the people of every town will flee. Some of them will hide in the thickets. Others will climb up among the rocks. All the cities will be deserted. No one will remain in them.

I will punish you as an adulteress and murderer deserves. I will avenge your bloody deeds with furious rage.

He stretched out the form of a hand and grabbed me by a lock of hair on my head. Then a wind lifted me up between the earth and sky and brought me to Jerusalem by means of divine visions, to the door of the inner gate which faces north where the statue which provokes to jealousy was located.Then I perceived that the glory of the God of Israel was there, as in the vision I had seen earlier in the valley.He said to me,“ Son of man, look up toward the north.” So I looked up toward the north, and I noticed to the north of the altar gate was this statue of jealousy at the entrance.

The wealth of a rich person is like a strong city, and it is like a high wall in his imagination.

Yet God will make you a permanent heap of ruins. He will scoop you up and remove you from your home; he will uproot you from the land of the living.( Selah)When the godly see this, they will be filled with awe, and will mock the evildoer, saying:“ Look, here is the man who would not make God his protector! He trusted in his great wealth and was confident about his plans to destroy others.”

So,” the Lord GOD says,“ my raging fury will be poured out on this land. It will be poured out on human beings and animals, on trees and crops. And it will burn like a fire which cannot be extinguished.”

At that time men will throw their silver and gold idols, which they made for themselves to worship, into the caves where rodents and bats live,so they themselves can go into the crevices of the rocky cliffs and the openings under the rocky overhangs, trying to escape the dreadful judgment of the LORD and his royal splendor, when he rises up to terrify the earth.

therefore this is what the sovereign LORD says: Surely I have spoken in the fire of my zeal against the rest of the nations, and against all Edom, who with great joy and utter contempt have made my land their property and prey, because of its pasture.’“ Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel, and say to the mountains and hills, the ravines and valleys,‘ This is what the sovereign LORD says: Look, I have spoken in my zeal and in my anger, because you have endured the insults of the nations.
