Thus says the Lord:“ For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they have threshed Gilead with threshing sledges of iron.So I will send a fire upon the house of Hazael, and it shall devour the strongholds of Ben-hadad.I will break the gate-bar of Damascus, and cut off the inhabitants from the Valley of Aven, and him who holds the scepter from Beth-eden; and the people of Syria shall go into exile to Kir,” says the Lord.

Concerning Damascus:“ Hamath and Arpad are confounded, for they have heard bad news; they melt in fear, they are troubled like the sea that cannot be quiet.Damascus has become feeble, she turned to flee, and panic seized her; anguish and sorrows have taken hold of her, as of a woman in labor.How is the famous city not forsaken, the city of my joy?Therefore her young men shall fall in her squares, and all her soldiers shall be destroyed in that day, declares the Lord of hosts.And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall devour the strongholds of Ben-hadad.”

My eyes are ever toward the Lord, for he will pluck my feet out of the net.

O Lord, my strength and my stronghold, my refuge in the day of trouble, to you shall the nations come from the ends of the earth and say:“ Our fathers have inherited nothing but lies, worthless things in which there is no profit.

Behold, Damascus will cease to be a city and will become a heap of ruins.The cities of Aroer are deserted; they will be for flocks, which will lie down, and none will make them afraid.The fortress will disappear from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus; and the remnant of Syria will be like the glory of the children of Israel, declares the Lord of hosts.

The Lord has sent a word against Jacob, and it will fall on Israel;and all the people will know, Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria, who say in pride and in arrogance of heart:“ The bricks have fallen, but we will build with dressed stones; the sycamores have been cut down, but we will put cedars in their place.”But the Lord raises the adversaries of Rezin against him, and stirs up his enemies.The Syrians on the east and the Philistines on the west devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.The people did not turn to him who struck them, nor inquire of the Lord of hosts.So the Lord cut off from Israel head and tail, palm branch and reed in one day—the elder and honored man is the head, and the prophet who teaches lies is the tail;for those who guide this people have been leading them astray, and those who are guided by them are swallowed up.Therefore the Lord does not rejoice over their young men, and has no compassion on their fatherless and widows; for everyone is godless and an evildoer, and every mouth speaks folly. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.For wickedness burns like a fire; it consumes briers and thorns; it kindles the thickets of the forest, and they roll upward in a column of smoke.Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts the land is scorched, and the people are like fuel for the fire; no one spares another.They slice meat on the right, but are still hungry, and they devour on the left, but are not satisfied; each devours the flesh of his own arm,Manasseh devours Ephraim, and Ephraim devours Manasseh; together they are against Judah. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.

The oracle concerning Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw.

Thus says the Lord:“ As the shepherd rescues from the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so shall the people of Israel who dwell in Samaria be rescued, with the corner of a couch and part of a bed.

I will send it out, declares the Lord of hosts, and it shall enter the house of the thief, and the house of him who swears falsely by my name. And it shall remain in his house and consume it, both timber and stones.”

And he divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and defeated them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus.

The Lord has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
