Before that time there were no wages for people or hire for animals. No one could go about their business safely because of their enemies, since I had turned everyone against their neighbor.

Before the work was started again, there was no pay for the people. And there was no money to rent animals. People could not go about their business safely because of their enemies. I had turned all of them against one another.

For before those days there was no wage for man or any wage for beast, neither was there any safety from the foe for him who went out or came in, for I set every man against his neighbor.

Before the work on the Temple began, there were no jobs and no money to hire people or animals. No traveler was safe from the enemy, for there were enemies on all sides. I had turned everyone against each other.

城中若吹角，百姓豈不戰兢嗎？災禍若臨到一城，豈非耶和華所降的嗎？

那時你們怎麼了？有人來到二十斗的穀堆那裏，卻只得了十斗；有人來到酒池那裏要取五十桶，卻只得了二十桶。我以焚風、霉爛、冰雹攻擊你們，和你們手上的各樣工作，你們仍不歸向我。這是耶和華說的。你們心裏要想一想，從今日起，就是從這九月二十四日起，從立耶和華殿根基的日子起，你們心裏想一想：

我要激起埃及人攻擊埃及人，弟兄攻擊弟兄，鄰舍攻擊鄰舍，這城攻擊那城，這國攻擊那國。

雖然被仇敵擄去，我也必在那裏命令刀劍殺戮他們；我必定睛在他們身上，降禍不降福。」

「你們不要以為我來是帶給地上和平，我來並不是帶來和平，而是刀劍。因為我來是要叫『人與父親對立，女兒與母親對立，媳婦與婆婆對立。人的仇敵就是自己家裏的人。』

那時，出入的人不得平安，各地的居民都遭大亂；他們被破壞殆盡，這國攻擊那國，這城攻擊那城，因為神用各樣災難擾亂他們。現在你們要剛強，不要手軟，因你們所行的必得賞賜。」

打水的聲音勝過弓箭的響聲，那裏，人要述說耶和華公義的作為，他對以色列鄉民公義的作為。「那時，耶和華的子民下到城門。

「看哪，我要差派許多打魚的捕獲他們；以後，我也要派許多打獵的，從各山上、各岡上、各石穴中獵取他們。這是耶和華說的。

「在亞拿之子珊迦的時候，在雅億的日子，大道無人行走，過路人繞道而行。以色列農村荒蕪，空無一人，直到我底波拉興起，興起作以色列之母！

你們撒的種多，收的卻少；你們吃，卻不得飽；喝，卻不得足；穿衣服，卻不得暖；領工錢的，領了工錢卻裝入有破洞的袋中。「萬軍之耶和華如此說，你們要省察自己的行為。你們要上山取木料，建造這殿，我就因此喜樂，且得榮耀。這是耶和華說的。你們盼望多得，看哪，所得的卻少；你們收到家中，我就吹去。這是為甚麼呢？因為我的殿荒涼，你們各人卻只為自己的房屋奔走。這是萬軍之耶和華說的。所以，因你們的緣故，天不降甘露，地也不出土產。我命令乾旱臨到土地、山岡、五穀、新酒、新油和地上的出產，也臨到人和牲畜，以及一切人手勞碌得來的。」
