因為那些日子以前、人的工價都得不着，牲口的工價也沒有；並且因有敵人的緣故、出入也不安全；因為我使眾人都互相攻擊。

Before that time there were no wages for people or hire for animals. No one could go about their business safely because of their enemies, since I had turned everyone against their neighbor.

Before the work was started again, there was no pay for the people. And there was no money to rent animals. People could not go about their business safely because of their enemies. I had turned all of them against one another.

For before those days there was no wage for man or any wage for beast, neither was there any safety from the foe for him who went out or came in, for I set every man against his neighbor.

Before the work on the Temple began, there were no jobs and no money to hire people or animals. No traveler was safe from the enemy, for there were enemies on all sides. I had turned everyone against each other.

你們怎麼樣？那時有人到二十斗穀堆的田地，只得了十斗；有人到酒池旁，想舀到五十窟，只舀到二十窟。那時我用旱風和霉爛擊打你們，又用冰雹擊打你們手下的各樣農作物，你們仍然不歸向我：永恆主發神諭說。現在你們要用心想想：從今日起，從這九月二十四日起，從永恆主殿堂根基奠定這一日起，你們請用心想想：

我必激動埃及人去攻擊埃及人，他們就打起仗來，各人攻打自己的族弟兄，各人攻打自己的鄰舍，城攻打城，國攻打國；

即使他們被仇敵擄去、流亡外國，就是從那裏、我也必吩咐刀劍去殺戮他們；我必拿眼瞪着他們，是要降禍，不是降福。』

『不要以為我來是把和平帶到地上；我來並不是帶和平，乃是帶刀劍。因為我來、是叫人跟父親割絕，女兒跟母親割絕，兒媳婦跟婆婆割絕；人的仇敵竟是他自己家裏的人。

那時出入的人不得平安；各地居民都遭了大亂，都被打得支離破碎：這國攻擊那國，這城攻擊那城；因為上帝用各樣災難使他們紛亂。但是你們呢、你們要剛強，你們的手不要發軟；因為你們所行的必得賞報。』

吹號筒者的聲音隔着擊鼓聲，人必述說永恆主救人的義氣，他在以色列農村施行的拯救；『那時永恆主的人民就下到城門口。

『永恆主發神諭說：看吧，我要差人去召許多打魚的，把以色列人打上來；然後我要差人去召許多打獵的，從各山上、各岡陵上，各碞石縫兒，把他們都獵取了來。

『在亞拿的兒子珊迦之日，在雅億的日子，公路無人行走；行路人走彎曲路徑。以色列中農村絕跡，盡都絕跡，直到你底波拉興起，直到你興起在以色列中為國母。

你們撒種，倒撒的多，收入的卻少；你們喫，卻喫不飽；喝，卻喝不足；有得穿，卻穿不暖；得了工錢，卻把工錢裝到刺破的口袋裏！『萬軍之永恆主這麼說：你們要用心想想你們所行的。你們要上山地取木料，以重建這殿；我就因此喜悅，並且得榮耀：這是永恆主說的。你們向慕着多，你看，卻得的少；你們收到家裏，我給吹去。為甚麼？萬軍之永恆主發神諭說：因為我的殿荒廢，而你們各人卻逕為自己的房屋奔跑啊。故此、為了你們的緣故、天就停降雨露，地也停生土產。我呼叫乾旱臨到了地上山岡，臨到了五穀、新酒、新油、和土地的出產，臨到了人類、牲口、以及人手所勞碌得來的一切東西。』
