“ But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near.Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. Those who are inside the city must depart. Those who are out in the country must not enter it,because these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written.Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing their babies in those days! For there will be great distress on the earth and wrath against this people.They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led away as captives among all nations. Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

Their children will be smashed to pieces before their very eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives raped.

Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing their babies in those days!Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath.For then there will be great suffering unlike anything that has happened from the beginning of the world until now, or ever will happen.And if those days had not been cut short, no one would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.

“ But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where it should not be( let the reader understand), then those in Judea must flee to the mountains.

For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and surround you and close in on you from every side.They will demolish you– you and your children within your walls– and they will not leave within you one stone on top of another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.”

My chosen ones will take possession of the land; my servants will live there.

Then there will be a fourth kingdom, one strong like iron. Just like iron breaks in pieces and shatters everything, and as iron breaks in pieces all of these metals, so it will break in pieces and crush the others.In that you were seeing feet and toes partly of wet clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom. Some of the strength of iron will be in it, for you saw iron mixed with wet clay.In that the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, the latter stages of this kingdom will be partly strong and partly fragile.And in that you saw iron mixed with wet clay, so people will be mixed with one another without adhering to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay.

“ Therefore this is what the LORD says:‘ Your wife will become a prostitute in the streets and your sons and daughters will die violently. Your land will be given to others and you will die in a foreign land. Israel will certainly be carried into exile away from its land.’”

They raped women in Zion, virgins in the towns of Judah.Princes were hung by their hands; elders were mistreated.

But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.For it is written:“ Rejoice, O barren woman who does not bear children; break forth and shout, you who have no birth pains, because the children of the desolate woman are more numerous than those of the woman who has a husband.”

It will happen in all the land, says the LORD, that two-thirds of the people in it will be cut off and die, but one-third will be left in it.Then I will bring the remaining third into the fire; I will refine them like silver is refined and will test them like gold is tested. They will call on my name and I will answer; I will say,‘ These are my people,’ and they will say,‘ The LORD is my God.’”

But be happy and rejoice forevermore over what I am about to create! For look, I am ready to create Jerusalem to be a source of joy, and her people to be a source of happiness.

The LORD spoke to Jeremiah while King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon was attacking Jerusalem and the towns around it with a large army. This army consisted of troops from his own army and from the kingdoms and peoples of the lands under his dominion.

Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus to register all the empire for taxes.

For in those days there will be suffering unlike anything that has happened from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, or ever will happen.
