“ Behold, like a lion coming up from the thicket of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make them run away from her, and I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me?

“ Wail, you shepherds, and cry out, and roll in ashes, you lords of the flock, for the days of your slaughter and dispersion have come, and you shall fall like a choice vessel.No refuge will remain for the shepherds, nor escape for the lords of the flock.A voice— the cry of the shepherds, and the wail of the lords of the flock! For the Lord is laying waste their pasture,

Put on sackcloth and lament, O priests; wail, O ministers of the altar. Go in, pass the night in sackcloth, O ministers of my God! Because grain offering and drink offering are withheld from the house of your God.

“ On that day you shall not be put to shame because of the deeds by which you have rebelled against me; for then I will remove from your midst your proudly exultant ones, and you shall no longer be haughty in my holy mountain.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you.Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten.Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days.Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you.

Shall not the land tremble on this account, and everyone mourn who dwells in it, and all of it rise like the Nile, and be tossed about and sink again, like the Nile of Egypt?”

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them,“ You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.And do not presume to say to yourselves,‘ We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

In one month I destroyed the three shepherds. But I became impatient with them, and they also detested me.

Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered,

then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth.’”

The inhabitants of Samaria tremble for the calf of Beth-aven. Its people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests— those who rejoiced over it and over its glory— for it has departed from them.

Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I myself have seen it, declares the Lord.Go now to my place that was in Shiloh, where I made my name dwell at first, and see what I did to it because of the evil of my people Israel.And now, because you have done all these things, declares the Lord, and when I spoke to you persistently you did not listen, and when I called you, you did not answer,therefore I will do to the house that is called by my name, and in which you trust, and to the place that I gave to you and to your fathers, as I did to Shiloh.

“ But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.

And the Lord said,“ Call his name Not My People, for you are not my people, and I am not your God.”Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered. And in the place where it was said to them,“ You are not my people,” it shall be said to them,“ Children of the living God.”

And she named the child Ichabod, saying,“ The glory has departed from Israel!” because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband.And she said,“ The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”

“ On that day,” declares the Lord,“ a cry will be heard from the Fish Gate, a wail from the Second Quarter, a loud crash from the hills.

And she brought up one of her cubs; he became a young lion, and he learned to catch prey; he devoured men.The nations heard about him; he was caught in their pit, and they brought him with hooks to the land of Egypt.When she saw that she waited in vain, that her hope was lost, she took another of her cubs and made him a young lion.He prowled among the lions; he became a young lion, and he learned to catch prey; he devoured men,

Behold, like a lion coming up from the jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me?

The lions have roared against him; they have roared loudly. They have made his land a waste; his cities are in ruins, without inhabitant.

Her officials within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves that leave nothing till the morning.

Then the Lord said to me,“ Take once more the equipment of a foolish shepherd.For behold, I am raising up in the land a shepherd who does not care for those being destroyed, or seek the young or heal the maimed or nourish the healthy, but devours the flesh of the fat ones, tearing off even their hoofs.“ Woe to my worthless shepherd, who deserts the flock! May the sword strike his arm and his right eye! Let his arm be wholly withered, his right eye utterly blinded!”

And he said to me,‘ Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’”Up to this word they listened to him. Then they raised their voices and said,“ Away with such a fellow from the earth! For he should not be allowed to live.”

Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits.And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.”When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them.

Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen!

‘ Say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will profane my sanctuary, the pride of your power, the delight of your eyes, and the yearning of your soul, and your sons and your daughters whom you left behind shall fall by the sword.And you shall do as I have done; you shall not cover your lips, nor eat the bread of men.Your turbans shall be on your heads and your shoes on your feet; you shall not mourn or weep, but you shall rot away in your iniquities and groan to one another.Thus shall Ezekiel be to you a sign; according to all that he has done you shall do. When this comes, then you will know that I am the Lord God.’“ As for you, son of man, surely on the day when I take from them their stronghold, their joy and glory, the delight of their eyes and their soul’s desire, and also their sons and daughters,

Do not trust in these deceptive words:‘ This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.’

Then they secretly instigated men who said,“ We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.”And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council,and they set up false witnesses who said,“ This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law,for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and will change the customs that Moses delivered to us.”

You shall leave your name to my chosen for a curse, and the Lord God will put you to death, but his servants he will call by another name,

What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened,as it is written,“ God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, down to this very day.”And David says,“ Let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them;let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and bend their backs forever.”So I ask, did they stumble in order that they might fall? By no means! Rather, through their trespass salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous.Now if their trespass means riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion mean!

In vain have I struck your children; they took no correction; your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion.

Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”
