So I said to myself,“ I will get up and roam the city, searching in all its streets and squares. I will search for the one I love.” So I searched everywhere but did not find him.

God sent a man, John the Baptist,

“ Run up and down every street in Jerusalem,” says the Lord.“ Look high and low; search throughout the city! If you can find even one just and honest person, I will not destroy the city.

This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.

Joyful are those who listen to me, watching for me daily at my gates, waiting for me outside my home!

Think carefully about what is right, and stop sinning. For to your shame I say that some of you don’t know God at all.

For you are God, my only safe haven. Why have you tossed me aside? Why must I wander around in grief, oppressed by my enemies?Send out your light and your truth; let them guide me. Let them lead me to your holy mountain, to the place where you live.There I will go to the altar of God, to God— the source of all my joy. I will praise you with my harp, O God, my God!Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!

On the hilltop along the road, she takes her stand at the crossroads.By the gates at the entrance to the town, on the road leading in, she cries aloud,

Has the Lord rejected me forever? Will he never again be kind to me?Is his unfailing love gone forever? Have his promises permanently failed?Has God forgotten to be gracious? “ The servant returned and told his master what they had said. My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help?Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer. Every night I lift my voice, but I find no relief.

Wisdom shouts in the streets. She cries out in the public square.She calls to the crowds along the main street, to those gathered in front of the city gate:

I hear the tumult of the raging seas as your waves and surging tides sweep over me.But each day the Lord pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life.“ O God my rock,” I cry,“ why have you forgotten me? Why must I wander around in grief, oppressed by my enemies?”

Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter,“ Couldn’t you watch with me even one hour?Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!”
