My lover said to me,“ Rise up, my darling! Come away with me, my fair one!

Even before you begin your attack, while your plans are ripening like grapes, the Lord will cut off your new growth with pruning shears. He will snip off and discard your spreading branches.

As God’s partners, we beg you not to accept this marvelous gift of God’s kindness and then ignore it.For God says,“ At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the“ right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.

Its branches will spread out like beautiful olive trees, as fragrant as the cedars of Lebanon.

The Sovereign Lord will show his justice to the nations of the world. Everyone will praise him! His righteousness will be like a garden in early spring, with plants springing up everywhere.

So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead,“ Come back to God!”

Come, my love, let us go out to the fields and spend the night among the wildflowers.Let us get up early and go to the vineyards to see if the grapevines have budded, if the blossoms have opened, and if the pomegranates have bloomed. There I will give you my love.There the mandrakes give off their fragrance, and the finest fruits are at our door, new delights as well as old, which I have saved for you, my lover.

Then Jesus told this story:“ A man planted a fig tree in his garden and came again and again to see if there was any fruit on it, but he was always disappointed.Finally, he said to his gardener,‘ I’ve waited three years, and there hasn’t been a single fig! Cut it down. It’s just taking up space in the garden.’

“ How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way to peace. But now it is too late, and peace is hidden from your eyes.

I said,“ I will climb the palm tree and take hold of its fruit.” May your breasts be like grape clusters, and the fragrance of your breath like apples.

I am giving you a promise now while the seed is still in the barn. You have not yet harvested your grain, and your grapevines, fig trees, pomegranates, and olive trees have not yet produced their crops. But from this day onward I will bless you.”

“ The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry.It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.

I went down to the grove of walnut trees and out to the valley to see the new spring growth, to see whether the grapevines had budded or the pomegranates were in bloom.

“ Now learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near.
